Could they void the PL due to the Coronavirus? | No | Resuming June 17th

I don’t think the ‘country returning back to normal’ and football being able to be played behind closed doors, for instance, are to be judged by the same standard.

I suspect PL will try and go the closed doors route at some stage before we decide to scrap altogether.

I expect the government will have a say when sport can start up again, whether behind closed doors or not, rather than the PL or FA. That is presuming players will play & not refuse to do so, as well as clubs like Man City refusing to play full stop until there is an all clear. It seems that the biggest peiority by some is not the safety of the UK populace but rather to make sure Liverpool can win the league, & the PL can ensure it gets its full compliment of its pieces of silver from SKY & BT.

It’s not as sinister as you imply. All industries are concerned with safeguarding their futures, and for football, playing football will keep the lights on. I think a lot more stakeholders than the PL would need their pieces of silver. I doubt clubs would be reticent to play football if they thought it could be done safely, when players and staff are having wages deferred and others are at risk of administration.

I'm surprised people can't see the way this is going.

Clearly going to get ditched. The recent comments from UEFA, the FA cancellation of lower leagues and now players speaking out about not wanting games BCD and the season being cancelled. Liverpool fans need to mentally prepare for this as it's going to hit hard.

Gundogan reckons the title should be given to Liverpool and has no problem with it.

Each stadium has a ground safety certificate which has a load of conditions associated with it, things like stewards, number of police, medical staff, ambulances etc etc. If you can’t meet the requirements of the certificate then you can’t play a match. Odds on the local Police, NHS etc wanting to provide resources just so a game of football can go ahead?

The musings have begun... I'm starting g to get the sense this season might indeed be voided. Resume next season on status quo from last season. Can't give Liverpool the title if that happens cos they hadn't won it mathematically, and what happened was a force of nature. Scary to think of the meltdown that would happen on Merseyside. Might be hard to contain! And we'd be stuck in the Europa league

This season is gone.

I hope there's enough time to play 19 games per club next season. Well, we may have a way of "completing" a full season if the PL decides before the start of the season (November, December, January, whenever that is) that the 2021 season will be a single tie (lottery to decide home or away venue) event. It would be absolutely fair if the rules were laid down before the season began. That's one way of finishing the League next year assuming this virus doesn't miraculously disappear.

What a wonderfully selfless act from Harry Kane proposing the season should be scrapped when his own team are playing so well & are red hot favourites for a top 4 spot. Plus they're in the quarter finals of the FA Cup, & progressing really well in the Champions League. What a man. So noble & so virtuous.

So the priority is to start a half season IF there is enough time instead of completing a 3/4 finished one. Fair play that’s definitely a triple salchow thought process.

Some bright sparks had an idea

I imagine the players will have something to say about that, lots of them wont be willing to take any risks IMO, this obsession with finishing this league off while the deatsh are piling up is mind boggling, I mean I can't see them starting European cup comps up again straight away so top 4 is irrelevant at this point, the only losers in this are Liverpool and clubs that would be promoted.

As opposed to you?

I imagine he means in regards to who will be making the calls regarding what happens, Liverpool aren't going to be just given the league no matter how badly some want it to happen for whatever reason.

What a shit idea.

you still have thousands of players all in close quarters.

I also doubt it will be a mega event at all. The vast majority of games will be dead rubber, it wouldn’t be any sort of spectacle. I also don’t imagine all these clubs agreeing to take their players into isolation together for a month to play away from home.

this is a non starter.

Yep. One position can't be decided in isolation. Why should we accept 5th when we could have finished 3rd? And if all can't agree, then void it is. Anyway, let's concentrate on saving lives amd getting over this crisis. The football can wait...however it's eventually resolved.

Oh that's ok then.
Even if the whole City team beg the FA to award Liverpool the league, it misses the point again.
That it's not all about Liverpool.

What does Gundogan reckon about sorting all the other positions across tiers?

unfortunately for you, whilst spurs can be mildly annoying, they don’t have a documented history of being a self absorbed and inward looking fanbase like Liverpool.

Kane is saying out loud what any rational person is thinking - that is, we all want the league to finish, but ultimately there’s a cut off point, and logically that’s 30 June.
Let's be honest here, Kane is making these comments because he knows a void suits Spurs down to the ground, no more, no less.

If Spurs were about to win their first title for generations he would be outraged at the mere thought of it.

Yeah it's not just the players risking the virus. It seems like they want them to play a feck-load of games in a short period of time, risking injuries and their future earnings.

Yeah, putting club allegiances to one side, I don't think you say no to fitting in a part season to then have a part season.

However, we're months from being ok to play. Say it's six months more and they start mid October and season has to end mid May (for Euros), that's 7 months. 30 weeks, a game a week plus a few midweek, all Cup games one off ties, same for European games. Tight but doable.... 3 games a fortnight for successful clubs

The social distancing measures will be extended way more. If we all have to stick to the two metre rule, then so should the players...so it’s not happening, quarantined in the midlands or not.

Strange the Vermin aren’t arsed in the slightest about any FA Cup or CL matches.

Don't think that's true - an infected person infects 3 other persons or so on average, but the aim of the lockdown is also to get that number below 1. That would make the virus go away eventually since the average carrier infects less than 1 person in that case. It would only be temporarily, but I think that's also the aim.

If we reduce infections then if we just went back to normal in a few weeks time we would see infections climb again but I doubt that is how it will be handled. I fear we may see serious restriction for a long time partly dependent on how soon/if we develop a vaccine and/or a treatment. In the end a full return to normal requires 50-80% of people getting, or being immunised against, Covid-19 (the estimated minimum level for herd immunity). If not by vaccination this could take a long time if we aren't to overwhelm medial services worldwide.

Football will have to be played like this

Some lower leagues have already been cancelled haven't they?

If existing position is used in higher leagues (which I doubt) then either the lower leagues decision would have to be reversed or you need a procedure for where promotion/relegation between voided and non-voided leagues occur. Hard to see a solution tbh.

I also suspect that we are going to be restricted by this virus long enough that either this season will not be completed or next season won't happen and this season is completed in late 2020 or 2021.

It’s getting voided. Delanys tweet is ridiculous for so many reasons.

Still interests me the government would like major sport to be back within a realistic timeframe, that's not the first article that viewpoint has appeared. Conflicts with the general tone in today's press conference.

Void of the season is much more likely than this time last week anyway, that's clear.

Amazing really. In fact, it's more a narrative of scrap it to finish the league. If 1 goes, all go.

Players are also at risk and since it attacks respiratory system, it could cause lasting damage that we might not be aware of. Also criteria for damage for normal public is different from football players. I think most players will revolt against the idea of playing in quarantine environment till we have medical assessment of the damage it can cause. Dont know how clubs can legally force players to play in pandemic situation.

“tv mega event”? Seems like a hard sell. If the title was still being contested I could see potential in the idea but top four and relegation battle really isn’t all that engaging to fans who don’t support the involved clubs. BCD football sucks, absolutely everyone involved will just be desperate to get it over with.
