Could they void the PL due to the Coronavirus? | No | Resuming June 17th

why would anyone give the Liverpool supporters on here a pass - unless you are being sarcastic. Their views are so skewed by their rampant desire to win the league at all costs.
Not giving them a pass, I'm saying I can't blame what 30 year drought does to the mind, some fans are hell bent like you say, no matter what.
My gripe is those of US that think having the league start back up asap is a good idea.

I was reading an article from a Geneticist and he reckons that it will be at least 12 months until we get on top of Corona virus, possibly even longer than that.
If he is right, or even close to being right, how the heck do you continue with this current season?
It simply doesn't seem possible, even starting anew from next season seems very unlikely, and that's not even taking into consideration players being out of contract, or how many clubs will be out of business by that time, or any other logistics....?!?

So many of the football fans seem to think this whole pandemic will have blown over in a few weeks..!!

There will be a huge amount of issues to be resolved if they cut short or even cancelled the league.
Placings including winners, Champions league qualification, Europa league qualification and relegation places
I think it’s more likely they would try to finish the season with remaining games played behind closed doors. Obviously that would be contingent on health risks too.

Have you noticed that a big number of Liverpool supporters are starting to give up on continuing the league even from the number of their posts here - they seem to have dwindled considerably, except for our friend FM who keeps fighting for the 'seemingly' lost cause ??

If other leagues around Europe cancel their leagues, why would England get to put forward a new set of qualifying teams when all other clubs are viewing the next season as restarting this season?

Also the likelihood is that domestic football returns at least a season before European football so if we finish this season, we will have 4 teams expecting European qualification this season and four teams expecting qualification next season what happens in that scenario?

If teams in the lower divisions of English football aren’t promoting and relegating teams, where does that chain stop and which division will be left with too many teams?

All these complications and impracticalities just so Liverpool get their title? We’ve already had an influx of tens of thousands of people from a virus hotspot to satisfy your cravings for a home crowd for one of your “special European nights at Anfield” (which it most definitely was to be fair), so I think we are done with indulging your lot for now.

To the folk here talking about ‘fairness’, tell that to the mum and dad now out of work with three young children to feed, a mortgage to pay off and with absolutely no idea of how long they’ll be on the dole for. Tell it to the octogenarians in nursing homes who are in isolation and haven’t had a visit from family members in weeks already and looking like they won’t until late summer at the very earliest. Try talk about fairness to the frontline staff who are battling this disease on behalf of us all with inadequate PPE, with many of these people likely to become ill themselves.

Sport, during times like these, mean absolutely diddly squat. I don’t want to hear a peep from football clubs unless they’re announcing something which will benefit this crisis (donating money, equipment, facilities) and not fecking whinging about not being recognised as champions of a makey-uppy, immaterial-in-the-scheme-of-things league.

It truly amazes me how small minded some people are, If you as much as show a little care for the sport ingrained in your life you get an army full of people wading in with their sizes nine's trying to pass you off as Fred West mark 2, it's truly ridiculous.

You do realize you can wish for a positive outcome on both football and the pandemic, right?

Wishing and hoping is different to displaying utter ignorance and trying to pass off misinformation that's not from this reality.

Everyone here wants football back as soon as possible, most of us aren't making mad posts that show a total lack of awareness to what is happening to the world right now.

It's been a constant theme on all forms of social media for ages now.

Person one "I really miss football"
Person two "omg no respect to the people that are dying".

Not one person has said or even implied they want or would be willing to to sacrifice life for the return of the league so what really is the harm of discussing it?

Just for context. Universities are already contingency planning that the next academic year may have to start in January 2021 rather than September and run a shortened programme to get back on track.

I can see that being replicated in Football.

Has anyone thought of the possibility that this will be SO BAD, that they can't start playing until 2021 and they decide to just carry over this season?

So many degrees can be done remotely in todays day and age, I don't really understand this.

Player contracts, as I seen mentioned the fact United could recall Henderson from Sheffield United in june June would make a mockery of the league, also Willian from Chelsea is out of contract in the summer, so that's two teams in a direct fight with us that would be significantly weakened through no fault of their own.

How will you conduct an exam online?

Yeah I suppose in these circumstances they will need to arrange rooms for students to go to, but why would you push degree start dates from September to Jan? 3-4 months learning tends to be the norm before the first set of exams for that year, and by that time you can have students sitting exams in an adjusted format.

Another question about canceling the season, what will they do with the prize money teams get? How will those be distributed? If it's cancelled and nothing is worth what has been done this season, do they get it based on the last season?

If they do somehow conclude this season by condensing games, playing behind closed doors etc the results of the season should be viewed similarly to the competitions that took place during WW2. Sure, there were winners and losers but no one really recognises them as an official part of football history.

How will you conduct an exam online?
It’s done all the time in various professional qualifications. Usually, a webcam is required that shows the user and their surroundings with a live microphone so an invigilator can observe; exam paper is hosted on a VM accessed via a web portal so there is no ability to import/export content, there is often also the need to accept deployment of monitoring software to your machine so they can see if you’re using an external source to lookup answers etc.
MissP has an ITIL exam next week which is being conducted using the above.

So players could spend months and months doing only individual trainining programmes and that's it? Can't imagine the quality of football once leagues start again.

I can't see how, until there is a vaccine, there will be any large gatherings like football matches, olympics or anything. You are just asking for another outbreak.

Most experts think 18 months for that. We won't be locked down for that long of course, but I don't think football, concerts or anything will be viable until next year. Never mind this season, we may have to lose the next one too.

This would be because total lock-downs don't get rid of the virus. They just stop it spreading so fast. Once you end them, the virus will simply start spreading again. It's global already, so impossible to stamp it out with such measures.

The end game is either a vaccine in 18 months+ or 70-100% global infection rate so the spread burns out naturally.

Either of those options is taking at least 12 months.

Agreed they can do, but the Universities have a huge cash cow in students from abroad and the UK living in halls and spending on campus.

The safety and security of campus living offer a lot of reassurance to parents also. Mature students generally spend less time and money on campus so to move to everyone studying that way would affect the bottom line too much. Most Universities have a healthy surplus so they can ride out the storm for a while, but they will want to guarantee the overseas income ASAP.

This will get cancelled. People will die by hundred of thousands/ millions. That they are even thinking about going through with games behind closed doors is a disgrace.

Given the fact that the scientists are in general agreement that even if this virus does recede during the summer months it'll be back again come winter time. Then to even consider a 2020/21 season ever existing is 'pie-in-the-sky' stuff. As suggested by a poster only yesterday, the best viable option would be to mothball this current season for 12 months, then come back next year & finish it off. Things such as players contracts, transfer windows etc are merely side issues that can be sorted out during the year long hibernation period. Given the current situation is only going to get worse, & players voicing their concerns about even playing games behind closed doors, then a long break, with a view to completing this season at a later date, seems to be the only way to satisfy most parties.

This 100%! Well said. Football should be the 101st thing anybody should be thinking about at this time.

Yep, just because we're talking about football related matters doesn't mean we're not showing any concern or interest in the terrible world events we are all living through at the moment. I find it quite ironic when people try to claim some sort of moral high ground when they say ' how can you even consider thinking about football when lots of people are dying', & they post it on a football forum which they've obviously read. I mean, how could you spend your time posting on a football forum with all this misery going on around us ?

The head of UEFA said European football leagues were still looking at all options and not ruling out finishing this season - if the coronavirus pandemic subsides.

"We could start again in mid-May, in June or even late June," Aleksander Ceferin told Italy's La Repubblica daily.

Any time after that and "the season will probably be lost," he said.

Not to mention during the years multiple people die every time someone watches their team play, when Chelsea fans were celebrating in Munich, United fans in Moscow, Liverpool fans in Istanbul many people around the globe were losing their lives in the same moment, were we all cnuts then too? If not where's the line? if it's truly awful to talk about/enjoy football when bad stuff is happening in the world surely that has to apply all round? For example i was at a game last season when I found out about the Ethiopian max 8 flight falling from the sky, does that make me an awful person? Was I not allowed to feel sad for the victims of that flight and later on also jump up from my seat when Eden Hazard got a late goal? Or are those emotions mutually exclusive?

I'm truly genuinely sad for every single person who loses their life during this pandemic and who knows, it could happen to me, but if I'm lucky enough to still be here once football returns I will be buzzing like a kid at Christmas, because a sport I love will be back after long hard months without it.

I think it's quite plausible we don't see a return until then, but how many football league clubs will go bust if that is the case?

10? 20? more?

The football associations will have to conduct a bail-out similar to what the government is doing, obviously on a smaller scale but to keep those clubs afloat. There’s more than enough money for them to do that, whether they would is another matter.

The problem at the moment is testing. Not enough people have been tested so we do not know how deadly this thing is as at the moment the only people really being tested are those that are seriously ill with it, while it is then prodomintly killing either the old or people with underlying issues.

Further, the death rate of 5% could actually be a lot lower if it turns out that a further 200,000 people have it and do not know about it. If that is true then this lock down will finish sooner rather than later and/or the lockdown will only be applicable to the old/weak.

This lockdown needs to finish asap as is costing billions and if we do not get the economy up and running asap, the poverty it will wreak will cost even more lives than the CV.

Can anyone explain how "behind closed doors" will work?

So presumably lots of people gathered together when there is a virus about, that has the potential to kill huge numbers of people is not a good idea right? so no crowds please. Fine
But 22 athletes, another dozen on the bench, 5 officials, kit men, physios, medical staff, training staff, broadcasting teams, ball boys, for every game in every round until the end of the season, is somehow an acceptable level of exposure? Are all this lot going to go in to strict quarantine after every game? And what about the impact of serious injuries that may require hospital resources?

It sounds a really stupid idea to me.

I can only see two scenarios:
a) Miracle recovery, everything is cured and safe, back to football, Wetherspoons and dogging.
b) The virus persists and we continue to limit unnecessary potential exposure to the virus, which includes not playing loads of team sports that require huge support staff.

It would still be better than the alternative of voiding this season and next season be a shortened one.

Let’s be honest, no one can definitely say any of the options presented is in fact “satisfying the majority”. There’s so many complications and challenges with pursuing any option. It’s impossible to state that as fact.

Satisfying the majority can’t be done, so next best thing is to make a decision that has the same effect on everyone and that is what the dippers are terrified of because there’s only one way to do that...

Its almost a definite then that we will lose the European football for this year.
