Could Manchester City "disappear" in few years?

Has anyone ever met a City fan outside of Manchester?

Weird this. Back when I was in school, in London, a lot of the people I knew supported either Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool; don't ever remember any City fans. I'm sure the newer generation are growing up hearing about their success (albeit, very minute), 5 year history etc. and City will have more fans scattered over the country, and maybe the World.

Edit: I haven't actually met them.

Yes, yes I have.

One was in his early 50s and couldn't remember why he supports them. I can't remember the other, wasn't that long ago, but didn't make any impression on me.

It was a genuine question. I have met many Chelsea, Arsenal fans outside of London but I seriously haven't met anyone who says they're a city fan. Even amongst kids that I have coached, I barely saw city kits but plenty of Arsenal/Chelsea kits. The next phase of City is so important for them if they want to establish a proper foothold.

Everything is in place for them to make a mark but at the same time there is a huge risk of it all going to shit. They are so reliant on a few core players - two of whom I would love to see at Madrid.. they're too good to be playing for a side which makes no impact in Europe.

I live in Aberdeen, and I work with one. He's an Aberdonian who claims he can't remember why he chose to support them, but has done all his life. I didn't know him prior to 2008 so I can't confirm whether or not he's a former Chelsea fan. He also makes jibes about all United fans living in London without a shred of irony. You know, because he's a Scottish City fan with no ties to Manchester whatsoever, whilst often gloating about City's current successes.

I've seen an increasing number of City shirts and general clobber around the town centre these days too. And when Aguero scored that fecking goal, the pub I was in nearly fell to pieces. It felt like I was the only United fan in there. Chants of "City til I die" and "Blue Moon".

I watched both legs of the league cup semi final derby in the very same pub just two years prior, and you could hear a pin drop when City equalised and then took the lead in the 1st leg. Not one City fan in there. Same for the 2nd leg. I was practically crowd surfing when Rooney scored the winner. It was chaos. Obviously a pub turn-out isn't an accurate method of measuring support, but it's still odd.

Very interesting haha. I don't know how I'd react if I saw a city fan - I've only bantered with liverpool/arsenal fans.. Chelsea barely. City is a complete novelty - obviously it is different for fans of United who reside in Manchester.

Judging by the empty seats today, their own 'fans' are starting to 'disappear'

Who are they actually going to be signing this summer? They've been linked with players like De Bruyne and Pogba but it's going to be near impossible to sign that caliber of player because every big club in Europe would be interested and there's not much reason to pick city.

GK - Hart (28), Caballero (33)

CB - Kompany(29), Demichelis (34), Mangala (24), Boyata (24)
RB - Zabaleta (30), Sagna (32)
LB- Clichy (30), Kolarov (29)

DM - Fernandinho (30), Fernando (28)
AM - Yaya (32)

AR- Nasris (27), Navas (29)
AL - Silva (29)

ST - Aguero (27), Bony (26), Dzeko (29),

Likely squad next year. Yaya looking like he may be on the move if the papers are anything to go by. Severe lack of English players as well in that squad. Who are they going to be going after then? Stones? Barkley?

Also according to Bluemoon they have a budget for £200m this summer with an expected £80m coming in from sales. Does this seem realistic with FFP?

Wow that's an old squad. Perhaps they may not even keep hold of Aguero too.

Yep. They haven't bought well. Those ages I put in are for the start for next season for anyone wondering why they are off for some players.

I really hope they don't end up with Ancelotti this summer.

I just cannot see them having 200m to spend.
They failed FFP last year, and have already spent 30m on Bony since.

Who can they sell for a reasonable value. The are obviously not selling Aguero or Silva, so who is there?
Dzeko and Jovetic together will probably pull in about 30-35m. I just don't see who else they would sell.

It will be interesting to see what they spend and the outcome of FFP for them this year

Apparently one of Kolorov and Clichy may be sold and Alex Sandro will be brought in as a replacement. Toure has been linked with Inter Milan a lot.

I've seen the links with Toure, but again, how much would them 3 sell for? I cant see you getting over 30m for all 3, and thats at a push.
It's ok selling them, but the replacements would cost more. Milner may be leaving on a free as well

I think the fact it'll take a few years to renovate the squad may create a slightly uninviting prospect but I do kind of expect City to target Ancelotti in the summer.

Don't really see Ancelotti being a man to come in and build a title winning squad either. Usually he seems to be a good manager to come in, assess a strong squad and find the best way of making it work. He's also got a terrible league record. I think its like 3 titles in 16 years!

@Igor Drefljak Yeah he's on 200k and will be 32. A club would be mad to sign Toure at this stage.

It seems like no one really have a clue on what kind of transfer budget City will be working on this summer.

They could sell Aguero to real madrid for a lot of money. I dont see any other set of players bringing in that sort of money dzeko and jovetic are combined likely to be worth £40m.

Also, if they go after the likes of Stones and Barkley those players are going to cost upwards of £40m to £50m each. I think over the next 3 years they will have to sacrifice a lot of squad depth by filling in places from academy players even if they are not good enough. Bulk of the money they have will be spent on upgrading their defense and central and right side of midfield.

Their squad isn't even that old to be honest. All the players in their peak, they just need some fresh, young new faces.

Realistic signings would be young players who have potential and room for growth. The need a new LB, a CM, one AM, and a genuine winger. They should sell Milner, Kolarov, Yaya, Dzeko, and Jovetic.

They should sign Rodriguez, Andre Gomes, Draxler, and Sterling. They should also promote some English youngsters if they want to meet league requirements. It starts to get all football manager but I think signing these young players will help them develop a core--not sure if it's possible for them though if they want to fall under FFP guidelines.

It depends on whether the board will be happy to just buy young and wait for a while until they can make a mark in europe. Because if they only bring in the players you mention then the squad still doesnt look robust enough for European football. It will be interesting to see what they do that's for sure

A few years ago when the sheikh arrived I thought it would be a crazy project for a couple of years , they began to make offers worldwide (including Robinho  ), but over time I changed my mind. Firstly because they have relied on the team that formed years ago. They could have blown the market skipping FFP with some sort of trade association but kept the same squad allowing new fans identify with the players, Silva , Zabaleta , Kompany , Toure , Aguero , Hart, Dzeko ...besides when a player tried to rebel , as the case of Tevez , they did not hesitate to severely punish him showing firmness and seriousness.
They bought Beguiristain , a very important person for Guardiola at Barcelona and have built a great sports city for the future. I don´t know the reality of the fans in England but at least in Spain I know a couple of children, aged 10-11 who regularly follow City. Michel Salgado , former Madrid player said his son is a crazy City fan and travel to Manchester to watch games whenever they have occasion

Spanish kids have a choice of supporting Madrid or Barcelona...they pick Manchester City?! Surprising. Their were some reports saying that Begiiristain may be getting sacked because the owners aren't pleased with the way the squad has shaped up and performed in europe.

Yes. I live in the US. Was a fan of Man Utd the day they started showing prem matches here, which was after Fergie was manager but before he won his first title. I finally met City fans after they were bought by oik sheiks and were winning. Never saw one before then. The truth hurts.

I work beside a City fan in Dublin, Ireland. I've only been at the place 5 weeks and all of this time I thought he was a Liverpool fan from the sound of him, but there you go. It was a surprise to say the least!

Children support their teams in la liga but some years ago if they had a favorite team in England they would choose United or Liverpool, I mean that nowadays things are changing. Now everything is more global and easier to follow what happens in other leagues.
I didn´t know about Beguiristain, but I would trust him a bit longer

If he's going to bring in more players like Mangala...I hope they give him a new contract.

And sell their unwanted players to small teams they own for massive amounts, then loan them to other teams.

Well if the FFP cannot stop City's "fake" investments then so be it.
It was a good move in theory but in practice, it's very hard to apply.

Platini is French. In France, he is aware of a legal entity called the DNCG. This entity reviews every year the financial statements of a football club and decides to:
- Restrict the club to recruit players, fully or partially
- Limit the provisional budget or payroll, with the players' contract being validated by the DNCG
- Limit the number of players who can be played as first team players

Other potential decisions:
- Relegation to lower divisions
- Interdiction to be promoted to upper divisions
- Exclusion to competitions

French clubs used to "moan" before PSG and Monaco were bought by foreign wealthy people how other European clubs were allowed to post deficits in their financial statements and still participate in competitions, while they were not allowed, creating a sort of "unfair" competition.
But of course, nobody cared about their voices.

Now some bigger clubs "moaned" about the new wealthy clubs, and all of sudden, we see the FFP.
Its intend is not bad, but clearly is it not innocent as well.

It is also to be noted that the UEFA will never be able to act like the DNCG, and the DNCG also "accepted" the PSG as they are currently allowed to play in the French league.

The key point of the DNCG is to make sure the club is not in debt, but it does not stop a wealthy owner to clear the debt if the accounts are negative.
Nobody cares about whether the money is "sustainable", i.e. it comes from the club itself or an external entity.
And frankly, why should we?

Statistically, it is almost impossible to have all sports clubs being profitable, unless the system is ran as a show business and in a closed league like in the US.
So only a handful list of clubs are going to be profitable.
It would be hypocritical to require all clubs to be profitable. At best, most club would break even.

The EPL is an exception. It is almost ran like a closed league such as the NBA, but the difference is that there are still some promotions and relegations to lower leagues. The clubs who have been in the EPL get a certain amount of the tv rights for the next 3 years after relegation, if I recall correctly. So the system will make sure those clubs have a chance to come back to EPL.

I am very proud of Manchester United's last 20 years sports success, and it has been based on / followed by the financial success as well.
But competition can take any form, including getting money from a wealthy owner.

A while ago, I think Wenger said something such as that the 4 big clubs of the EPL all have various reasons of success:
- Manchester United, the financial / business strategy
- Liverpool, the popular passion
- Arsenal, the youth system
- Chelsea, the owner's money

We can now add Manchester City in the Chelsea category and that's it.

It's like buying a worn down house in an elite neighbourhood.

The land = stadium
the worn down house = Manchester City FC
Neighbourhood = EPL

The Sheikh bought the house, tear it to ground, rebuild everything from scratch, fill it up with expensive piece of furniture, and now the house worth 2x the price he bought it for.

If he got bored / broke /etc, he'll sell the house, the house will still be worth 2x it's original price. So the next buyer will simply bought a posh house at the market rate.

Leeds goes bankrupt because they didn't invest in the structure of the house, just investing in an expensive sets of stereo they can't afford. But in City's case, their assets (stadium, players, sponsorship, goodwill, etc) is going up in tandem with its valuation.

So, Manchester City could not possibly disappear assuming everything is rational (A condition where the sheikh simply shut down City and forgone his capital is not a normal business scenario). It will only change hand, and it'll become the next daddy's plaything. It's just a more expensive toys than it was 5 years ago.

Would that be the same "forever" as the past 3 or 4 years?
The same 4 years where we have won the same number of titles and only been legitimately worse than them in 1 season (last season), whilst having better European performances than them barring 1 season?
