Hello, Caftafarians. I've been downloading TV shows at work and watching them. I download them and then drag them from the downloads window in my browser onto Portable VLC player on a USB (as can't download normal VLC due to no admin rights). However when I go to the downloads folder on the computer, none of the files are there. I want to find them to delete them and I can't see where they're going. I feel like they're taking up a lot of space now. Anyone know where they'll be? I can't even find them with a search.

So VLC is moving the files or your work computer automatically deletes files in the download folder.

Find out where the directory is pointing downloads to in the browser. Might be a browser/network specific folder. Somewhere in tools > preferences/options.

Well I just looked in the downloads folder and there are some random ones I downloaded last week. But there should be whole seasons of The Wire there that aren't. Just one random episode from season 4. I downloaded all of 3, 4 and 5. Doesn't make sense.

When they download into downloads are they tmp files? What browser do you use? Look for the download directory through the drop down options. Maybe your download goes to desktop and when you drag across it's no longer on your computer. Download something, do a search for it while it's on desktop and you can see it. See if it finds any other instance of that file.

Search your computer for them? Open VLC and take a look in the "recent media" bit?

Are they in documents->downloads which is where old browsers put them or in [user]-> downloads?

Aha, in recent media on VLC it says they're in a temp folder.

Still can't find them though. When I look at recent media it says C:/DOCUME-1/MY.NAME-1/LOCALS-1/TEMP/thefilename.avi

I'm at home now so my level of fecks given has decreased greatly. However it will annoy me again tomorrow.

I'm surprised you can open the files if you have admin security on your work pc. We used to be able to download files at Uni but weren't allowed to open them.

My guess is the files are stored in a folder where you have no access.

You're being a little cryptic. Is 'the filename' the name of the show? And you've looked in the Temp folder and they aren't there? That's a bit weird.

I couldn't even find a temp folder. Well I found one and couldn't open it.

Temp folders are controllable I think, maybe once he downloads a certain amount they are automatically deleted or his computer is set to delete temp files after every boot up.

If you can't open it.... I suppose you could check to see if it's big enough to contain the shows. If not you could at least rule it out. We need a computer burglar for this job.

Edit: @ Neo: Ah. So if Solius could check the size and it turned out to be 150kB it's probably safe to assume that's what happened.

Also why is it so hard to see how many GB memory the computer has left. On a Mac it's on the bottom of every Finder window.

You don't have my computer access.

Admin usually set all of these through the registry I think.

Right click the download in your browser and there should be an option to open the containing folder. Try that to find out where it is.

If the browser is downloading into a space which is unspecified by you (although you should be able to specify where exactly you are downloading your files) then it may be downloading it into a temporary folder hidden away in C: which you can only gain access to through admin rights. However this begs the question of how you are able to save stuff there if you can't later access it.

I think you mean hard drive space as opposed to memory! If you press the Windows button + E, the My Computer window should open up. Then it will tell you which hard disks are connected to that computer (both internal and external) and how much space is left on each.
