I reckon Sir Alex will start Veron

I don't agree with it though

Oh alright then.

Barthez

Neville G Blanc Ferdinand Silvestre

Beckham Butt Keane Giggs

RVN OGS

That's my strongest team, but I doubt it will be the actual team, as I think Veron will play.

eh?

I think Rio's an excellent defender, and that you've paid too much for cash for him..

I'm far happier that you've spent 30m on him then say on Duff, Ayala and a full back...are you?</strong><hr></blockquote>

£30 million is a massive fee. Most pundits and posters here reckon Rio's worth £25 million max.

Thing is, Davo, with the Nike money (£300 million over the next 13 years) and the amount of money United generate a season, allied to the fact that Rio is still 23 years of age, it is a long term investement.

I agree that Hyppia and Riise are quality players. A number of other players Liverpool have purchased (relatively cheaply)have been less so.

United are in the position of being "top of the food chain". They don't have to take a risk and hope a player matures and develops into a class act. They can wait and come in for them with a big money offer once he is the proven finished article. It's expensive, yes. But it depends on your budget. Rio's purchase will not put a dent in Utd's finances. The PLC may take a prudent approach and choose not to spend big again this season, but they will be back into the transfer market if required.

As for Duff, if Utd really want him they will pursue him.

The whole economics of world football are undergoing radical change. In the Daily Mail today there was an article highlighting that Utd are now in a financial league of their own in Europe. Collectively Serie A teams made a loss of £450 million last season. Barca and Real have to reign in their spending because of huge debts and are looking to off load rather than purchase players.

In that respect, Utd's policy of not trying to compete with these teams over the last few years has shown to be wise. Utd have developed a broad and sustainable business structure that is not as dependent on TV revenue as other teams. The NY Yankies deal is yet to fully kick in but is conservatively estimated to be worth a potential £500 million over the years.

Utd are in the position where they can pursue any player they really want to now. Transfer fees will fall over the next few years. Utd's financial muscle will grow.

It may not be healthy for a lot of other teams in terms of competition, but the purchase of RVN, Veron and Rio signals that Utd are serious about pursuing the world's best and regaining the PL and CL crowns.

It's OK DD. Give him enough of the strings, and he'll hang himself.

If delusions of grandeur help him to do the job successfully, I can turn a blind eye. ;)

Unfortunately, as can't change my original post, people can see you for the conman you are. ;)
