Music Commercial Hip Hop Thread

Just updated my post.....

But where is it leaked can I ask? I only checked Youtube for the first few and it was fake's.

Haven't found it yet, in college at the moment but will find it later.

And for the love of everything holy listen to Kendrick Lamar, you might wanna check out good kid, m.A.A.d city first, leans towards a more commercially friendly sound. It's a modern classic.

 I was expecting a response of the sort , I have been away too long, typically I'm not really part of the commercial movement, but its usually a good introduction to an artist before you bother with the more raw stuff I suppose, I'll get downloading at work now :D

Hop on Twitter and search the album title+Zip /Leak and you're good.

HudMo has an appearance in NWTS on track #9 'Connect'.

'Worst Behavior' my favorite from what I've heard so far.

What are your thoughts?

So far Worst Behaviour and own it and on time, numbers 5, 6 and 7 are very good, probably caught between the 'Own it' and the Worst behaviour track (If the latter is the one featuring an unknown female on the track who actually works well I think)
Wu-Tang Forever confuses me.

Not too much of a fan of that song yet to be honest, I think he said he was trying a lot of 'different' things this album, as apparently he was very depressed on all the 'So Far Gone' etc earlier mixtapes, so I think some will be hot/cold, still it may grow on me later :)

I don't like Drake's music, but this album was his best to date. He can produce some great songs when he wants to... It's just a shame he signed to the wrong label...

Not loving Kendrick's album... admittedly only listened to the one with Drake (bit moist) and the M.A.A.D city which screams pop song to me... will still give the rest a listen obviously, but hasn't blown me out the water...

Any more recommendations people? Good albums over the last few years...

Shabazz Palaces' "Black Up" is great. It's not really commercial hip-hop though.

Listen to it from the beginning. It's a conceptual album... and was quite easily the best rap album of 2012.

If you want to hear some Kendrick Lamar then get 'section 80' I prefer it to Good Kid mad city but I love both.

What pop have you been listening too? MC Eiht is on it and he's rapping about hitting a blunt laced with cocaine. MC Eiht's verse is great too. Pop? Shit man.

With some pretty big names dropping albuns this year, what was the one? I didn't listen to Danny Brown (I'm going to), but with disappointments with Kanye and Eminem (maybe it was my fault for expecting huge things), (Do I have to be ashamed to say I liked Drake's?), and a good but not great from Jay-Z, from the top of my head I say my favorite album was Tech N9ne's Something Else.

What do you think?

You're in the commercial hip hop thread, liking Drake is good here :smirk:

Out of all the ones you listed, Drake's album had the most replay value. Some of it was just cringing (Courtney from Hooters lyric) but overall it was a very decent effort. Fewer club anthems than before, which is a shame. Eminem had a few decent songs, but it fell below expectations. Jay-Z and Kanye's albums were slam dunked into the recycle bin.

Other than that, a lot of one hit wonders floating aroung. Personal favorites: YG's "My N**ga", Young Dro's "feck that Bitch". Dom Kennedy and Nipsey Hussle came out with decent mixtapes this year, although Nipsey's mixtape wasn't worth the $100 retail price. Vado's Slime Flu 4, Troy Ave's mixtape are decent. Outstanding nominee is Action Bronson's Blue Chips 2.

How could I forget Pusha's MNIMN? Raw shit.

Pusha T. I loved Yeezus. Drake's has grown on me and actually put me back on him slightly. Jay's was meh. Cole's was meh. Em's was decent. Danny Brown's, although not quite main stream in comparison, is easily the best.

Oh, yeah. Pusha T. I liked that too! Great shout, I actually forgot about it.

Drake's From Time is just awesome, imo. I listen a lot to it.

Tech N9ne and Eminem were my favourite albums of the year. MMLP2 has really grown on me (and I'm a bit of a Stan) and Tech's album was a great listen.

Big Sean & Cole were ok, but I thought they'd be better. Yeezus really sucked imo; Jay's album was poor too. Not a fan of Drake so can't comment on him.

Maybe not as mainstream as the others, but I liked Tyler & A$AP Ferg's albums and Mac Miller's album was better than I expected.

Maybe next year we'll get Detox...

Kanye's album stunk although I appreciate what he was trying his execution was shit. Drake's album was good but very came and went very quickly. Jay-Z's album was awful. Pusha T's album was good but needed more Neptunes. A$AP Ferg's album was great. Earl's album is ok to vibe to but was underwhelming. Still haven't listened to Tyler's album, Danny Brown's album or Blue Chips 2. Eminem's album came and went very quickly. Juicy J made a great album of 18 songs of the same song. Nothing has been the same since Kendrick dropped GKMC although I really enjoyed Game's album. Mainstream rap in 2013 has been underwhelming to say the least, best thing to happen was an average Kendrick verse.

Not bought a single Hip-Hop album this year, Danny Brown's - Old is probably my favourite album released so far. Was looking forward to Schoolboy Q's but that now seems to be coming next year. His latest single/leak from that album - Man of The Year is a quality song.

ScHoolboy Q and YG dropping albums in January, that will be a good month.

Yeezus was dope, Cole or Ferg got AOTY for me so far. Wale was decent, I didn't even check for Eminem, nobody really checking for that man in 2013 bar his core fan base (good thing it's so big) Jay underwhelmed.

Crenshaw was good, Dom Kennedy's was good too, Rocky leaked last year but released in Jan was dope too.

Didn't listen in full but Audio Push had a decent tape so did Cam

I refuse to listen to Audio Push on the basis they made 'Teach me how to Jerk'.

Yeezus was awful - I can see what Kanye West was trying to do, but the lyrical content was average at best. There were a couple of nice tracks, but overall it was a disappointing project, as it had so much potential. Maybe he can revisit similar beats and put out something even better, which he is capable of doing. J Cole's release was decent, but nothing special. Many - including myself - doubt whether he can actually form a great project. Drake was Drake. By far, it's his best album since he blew up, which isn't hard to accomplish. There were a couple of tracks that were dope - the intro was awesome, I liked how he adapted to the changes of the beat. But as the album progressed, he went back to his old ways. It's nice to see him murder Jay Z, too, on Pound Cake. Talking of Jay Z, I'm pretty much done with his projects. I can't relate to you if you're telling me about all the cars and money you got.
