I completely understand those concerns I’m very much of the opinion Gakpo isn’t a risk at £25m whether you play him as a LW/False 9.

What sets Gakpo apart is the creative part of his game. His assists numbers is great (and it is also reflected in his xa). Mostly a reflection of him being a great crosser as you say. But it is worth noting than much of it comes from corners and free kicks. A part of the game he is unlikely to be able to take with him (will he be prefered to Eriksen on corners and free kicks?). If you look at shots and goals created from open play, Bergwijn at PSV actually did better at PSV than Gakpo.

I like Gakpo and I think he will have a more successfull carrier than both Malen and Bergwijn. But I also think he will have to be much better than both to make sense for Man Utd. I’m really not sure that is the case.

All good points well made I believe he could be a huge success at United especially in a functional ETH side he’s got all the attributes ETH likes in a wide forward or false 9.

Stats are important but having watched him develop over several years I think a few people are sleeping on a potentially great player here.
 
And for what it’s worth a lot of Gakpo’s current game is a function of the side he’s in. He’s adapted very well to different roles in the Dutch NT.

If he’s like Rashford, then let’s get him. Two Rashfords in the team isn’t a bad thing. Two quick and nimble forwards up top and Gakpo himself is apparently quite clinical in front of goal, yeah?
 
He's got the numbers, awesome numbers really, 9 goals and 9 assists in 11 eredivise matches. 3 goals and 2 assists in 5 Europa league games. 7 MOTM awards this season.

My only fear its that he's turns out to be a Depay kind of players. A bully against lower teams but absolutely ineffective against top opposition.

Worth very much a punt to try him but wouldn't pay anything above 40M for him.

Antony fills a bigger need than Gakpo did as we could see today, and Ajax have more financial ability to stop a transfer than PSV do. While it seems he would be a great purchase, he seems to be best in the same role that Rashford already fills. Need to prioritize improving the starting 11 before making a signing like this.

You got no clue what you’re talking about tbh. Antony is a great player and shows it in the big matches as well. Gakpo mostly goes missing in big matches. Theyre not even close when we compare technique, speed and dribbling. Gakpo is highly overrated, I watch him every week. You would be better of going for Simons.

I dont think anyone said his performance was likely to drop massively.

Actually had another assist overruled by VAR today. (His second assist was really good too.)

Garnacho should be developed agree
Gakpo can play centrally and brings goals
Surely Pelletri is better than Elanga though

We agree not to agree once again Thoms. Antony has better dribbling skills then Gakpo and a better technique, but that’s about the only thing Antony is better at then Gakpo. Antony does not even come close to Gakpo’s assisting skills and goal scoring.

Ajax fans like the useless showbooting Antony does. All other Dutch football fans choose Gakpo over Antony all day long for one simple reason. Gakpo is consistantly decisive (and yes, he does play lesser games - but if you are a one man attack, it’s way more difficult to stand out then when you play with much better players - as Antony does).

I have not said who is the better player I have only mentioned the reported fee and there is a huge difference between players that have similar stats
Reply to the content of the post and not use it to spruik your opinion about something that many others have said already.

What big matches has Antony shown it in? Ajax did feck all with Antony in big matches. I dont know who has the higher ceiling, but comparing them in the Eredivisie Gakpo is by far the better player.

I do agree United shouldnt sign him and should go for Simons instead, but if anyone is overrated it's definitely Antony.

He tore Dortmund apart in both games in the CL last year.

What are you talking about? We literally had 6/6 in the CL run last year with him playing an important role in all of those. Also good stats vs PSV and Feyenoord including his last minute winner vs you lot.

Please tell me in what aspect Gakpo is a better player? He has a better assist and that’s about it. He is simply just like you stated not needed at UTD as they have options on the left-wing.

How is Antony overrated btw? Scored good goals already plus creates loads of spaces for other attackers just like he used to do at Ajax. Is he worth 100mil? No. But they got Martinez for cheap when you consider how he transformed the team.

@MarcianoVink at voetbalzone and vbprimeur all the people in the comments think Gapko is great vs the small teams but see him like a choker in big matches and so do I. I dont know anyone that would pick Gakpo over Antony from all that i’ve heard and read.

Antony is also a very good player but he’s very different to Gakpo.

Gakpo is a better final moment player, Antony is much better in build up play IMO.

If you needed a team talisman Gakpo is the better player but when we were shopping in the summer Antony was the best available wing option for us because of being a left footed RW.

Gakpo was also an excellent wide forward option to have with the potential of being a false 9 for us too like Martial.

Antony is a good player Gakpo was/is a better player in terms of decisive game winning moments. Take Gakpo out of the PSV side and it’s toothless, take Antony out of Ajax and it’s a far smaller loss.

Gakpo would be an excellent addition to the squad with the potential to be a LW/CF starter depending on how he adapts to new coaching and a new league.

Gakpo isn’t a choker in big matches and it’s a bit of a piss take to suggest he is given the amount of big Eredivise games he’s been decisive in. He has absolutely dragged PSV into something resembling a title challenge and his consistency over the last 2 seasons is remarkable. You don’t get that without a cast iron mentality.

Can we stop making this an Antony vs Gakpo thread as it’s pointless due to tribalism. Both are very good players for completely different reasons and would massively compliment one another as team mates.

Gakpo's numbers are fantastic against both Feyenoord and Ajax. He's not done much in the CL since PSV hardly feature there. Antony was good in a relatively easy CL group last year, but was nowhere to be found at the first real hurdle were you went out against Benfica. I'm strictly comparing them to the level they both played, which is the Eredivisie and there Gakpo is better at nearly every aspect of the game. More goals, more assists, stronger on the ball, he just has less flair than Antony and I think Antony is tougher mentally as he does absolutely everything to win whereas Gakpo seems a bit timid at times.

I think Antony can eventually develop into a better player than Gakpo, but he really hasn't done that much in the Eredivisie. Far better Eredivisie players have failed abroad.

Bottom line though, United did well to get Antony and not Gakpo (apart from the insane price) as Gakpo plays on the left and is not better than Rashford, Sancho or Martial and United had almost no one on the right.
 
I haven't watched much of him but it seems he's playing wide left. Is this the right time to move for a player that plays in Rashfords position when Rashford has arguably been our best attacking player. Not to mention Sancho looks to be mainly a player for the left and although he's not in the best of form, do we give up on him already?

I imagine it would be next to impossible to sign him considering that PSV just got him back in June 2022 and is on a 5yrs contract.

Well not exactly. Simons explained it in an interview recently. Simons went on a free to PSV and negotiated an optioin to go back to PSG for like 10 milion if he wants to and if PSG are willing to pay. But there is no clause between PSG and PSV or PSG and Simons, so its al up to Simons to decide.
 
I'd get him to add depth and give Sancho a kick up the arse. I don't see him as a striker though so would hope that we go after someone like Osimhen or Sesko too.
