People are saying the very same things they said when Pool signed Mane. This is a very astute signing for Klopp!

Neither him nor Felix are strikers, however unfortunately for us Gakpo scores more goals

A link up of Jao Felix, Bruno, Martial and Rashford up front could be lethal. Antony too. Gives us options.

Gakpo to me really isn’t as fluid on the ball compared to Jao Felix but I understand he might give you a few more goals…

If I was wanting to build a truly proven elite talent side Felix would be higher up my list.

Seemed a bigger talent than anyone we possess when we took on Athletico and to me Gakpo is stats rather than the eye test so far.

Felix passes the eye test with flying colours in my book.

Where is this idea that we are going to sign Felix coming from? Just like Gakpo, he does not address any need, and unlike Gakpo, his club is asking for €130m. Its even more unlikely than the Gakpo deal was and it would be a terrible signing anyways at that price point because he has been very poor for Atleti and because we are skint as it stands and so it would be a monumentally bad financial decision to make.

What we will be chasing is a goal scoring centre forward. Unfortunately its just our luck that when the club finally opens its eyes to what has been a major need for many years, the market is as bare as its been in decades for centre forwards.

Might be proven wrong, but I'm not really bothered about missing Gakpo. He really do not look like what we're missing up front.
Might be what Pool needs who knows, but we need a 9.

The longer these rats stay on as owners the more difficult rebuilding will be, we had a clear run at the player, we were in contact and he was keen but yet again the rats just went through the motions whilst praying that someone serious about football will come in and get the player. Now get ready for the briefs that we never wanted him, he wasn't the right player and we prefer to do deals in the summer, this is the second successive winter where we have let a manager that desperately needs help down.

To anyone with the slightest knowledge of football we need goals in this team to stand a chance of making the CL but we have just let a rival walk in and take the most prolific, available and gettable option around. Now we will have posters theorizing and justifying this negligence and utter incompetence when its clear one again that the Glazers have chosen money over football objectives like they did with Alvarez this time last year.

He is an average version of Martial, Don't let the few WC goals blow you away.

Wierd move from Klopp. Is Dias injury that bad?
Gapko will end up like Depay, Afellay, Kluivert etc. Not bothered about him at all.

He will probably do alright at Liverpool as they will play him in his favoured position until the others are fit again and then he will be a squad option.

Yeah, he probably made the right move. Salah is 30, he can be the 3rd winger behind him and Diaz for 2-3 years then take over when Salah moves on, with Diaz switching to the right. Only Carvalho to beat out really, and he may end up splitting time as a 10 with Harvey Elliot, since recreating his Dortmund 4-2-3-1 with Nunez as a clumsier, more athletic Lewandowski seems to be Klopp's plan for the next 5-6 years.

Hopefully he never puts it together, he'll probably be productive for them but there is a bit of the high hipped sort of un-agile Luque (17 appearances for Spain in the 4 years before he went to Newcastle, he was really pretty good, the difference is that he was 24-27 years old and in his prime and Gapko should be just starting his) type winger to him when you watch him. Not sure he'd have made a great #9. Much better at LW where he should be a good goal threat but also a quality crosser.

My guess is he'll be what he looks like, a Kewell/Malouda/Richarlison sort of very good #2 winger but not the guy you want as your main wide man, which at RW is fine, since those are tougher to find, but at LW is sort of a solid signing (especially for 50M these days) but nothing paradigm shifting. We'd swap Sancho for him at the moment, but not Rashford, Garnacho or Antony, and he'll probably be the 3rd best over the next 5 years if you re-rank all 4 of them (and consider that Antony is the only one that can play out right, which again I think has serious value, like being a left-footed LCB or a passing #8, the 3 toughest positions to fill at the highest level).

A decent player who plays in a position we are already pretty stacked in. We really do not need another wide forward but we do need a centre forward. The money if there is any is better spent elsewhere.

He's chums with VVD. Looks like the move has been in place for a while now & Liverpool's injury woes seem to have advanced their plans to sign him.

Van Dijk was asked about the future of Gakpo, with the player being heavily linked with both Manchester United and Real Madrid. When asked about the prospect of his countryman joining either club, Van Dijk gave a brutal response.
“Are Manchester United and Real Madrid on the same level at this moment?” Van Dijk replied, as quoted by The Athletic.
“No disrespect, not at all.
“I think he definitely has a next step in him. I definitely feel like it could happen. Whether it happens in the winter or next year, time will tell.
“But he’s a great boy, works hard, is very talented and there’s definitely more in him.
“We are very pleased he’s doing so well and long may it continue.”

It is like missing out on VDB. A player who we dont need at all as we had already equal/better players in his position and other positions needs strengthening. Sancho/Garnacho/Rashford/Martial all can play in his position. CF is the priority, unless we had missed out on Gakpo who could become a 20+ goals a season CF for liverpool. It may happen though.

Not really concerned about this. At our current stage, we need players who will take us to the next level, Gakpo seems a decent player but not really an upgrade on Rashford or Martial.

Blessing in disguise this. Sucks to miss out on a player to a rival but I feel like we’ll get a much better player than Gakpo in the summer.

This is exactly what I was thinking. This thread reminds me of the thread when Mane was signed. Eerily similar.

I think for me you could see Mane suited exactly what Klopp was trying to do. He was dynamic, hard working, could score and assist, was perfectly suited and already adapted to the Premier League, and the most important thing is that he bought into the press from the front, which for me was the basis Klopp built his success from, as all 3 forwards bought into this.

I just don't think Gakpo is that type of player, certainly in the games I've seen him for PSV against British opposition in Europe (x2 vs Leicester, x2 vs Rangers and x2 vs Arsenal). So while I think he does have some very good qualities, (his ball striking being 1 of them), I must admit I'm quite happy to see Klopp having to deviate from that elite pressing machine that made them so horrible to play against.

A club like ours should buy in January to secure CL and add a top No9 in the summer. People acting like we didn't want him? Of course ETH wanted him, it was widely reported we had a deal agreed in the summer, but had to pull out because we overpaid for Antony.

It smells more of throwing the budget at trying for CL and top four while appeasing their fan base and potential buyers.

let them spend which hopefully means less in the summer.

as for Gakpo; just not for me.

Summary of this thread:

Before Liverpool signing…he’s not good enough. Extremely overrated. Could never raise to the level of the Prem. He’s soft…

After Liverpool signing…we lost out again. Terrible recruitment. We will never get quality players. He’ll score 20+ in the Prem. Exactly the type of player we needed…
When have we ever gotten what we need.
This sucks. I wasn't particularly keen on him but slowly gotten behind the signing seeing we have no depth. It is not rational, but now absolutely gutted that we lose out to Liverpool and at such bargain price.

Doubt we would sign Gakpo and a 9 mate we’d be well over stacked in attack

Gakpo, Sancho, Rashford, Antony, Garnacho, Martial, and a new 9? 7 players for 3 spots and I’m not even including the likes of Elanga

Garnacho long term has twice the talent as this guy, I’d hate to lose him over signing someone like Gakpo.

It’s not pretending. We did not. Why? We need a proper CF. Gakpo is better on the left and is right footed. It’s safe to say we got that covered. If we can’t get a proper CF now I’d rather loan Felix and play him as a false 9.

First, you can thank Ronaldo for leaving us stranded like the petulant cnut he is.

Second, Martial is always picking up untimely injuries and doesn't always show consistency when fit.

Third, Sancho is quickly approaching the "lost cause" territory with the recent exile. What are the odds that he comes back even stronger if ever?

Fourth, there is a severe shortage of quality among strikers worldwide. The very few good ones available will be overpriced as a result.

How do you want us to get out of trouble with our striker woes? I personally preferred Gakpo because paying the rumored amount for him would have been better business than overpaying a striker in the current context (lack of quality, overpricing due to high demand).

You got points about martial etc.

But again we stacked in the wing forward spots. We also have 2 other youngish players who have yet to make or break for us in Dialo etc.

Your man is getting touted as he could maybe develop into a centre forward, too much it's and buts. But be another signing were we are buying for the sake of buying. I don't think he is what we need at all. Also not even sure he is good enough.

I wanted us to get him but it’s actually nice to see the club not continuing down the path of buying players in positions we already have strength in whilst the rest of the team sinks.

Striker or nothing this window. If the club sale goes through before the summer window we will be ready to reload.
So why did you want him then?

Bullet might be dodged, but we have back to back matches soon.

Martial cant possibly stay fit, so that leaves us with one attacker up front in Rashford.

So possibly one and a half striker for matches every 3 days. What can possibly go wrong?

Looks like this has become a fox can't get the grapes thread. Let's hope he really is shit. Would hate for him to actually be world class and playing for Liverpool.

Ronaldo leaving changed nothing. He's been useless all season.

To be fair, half the thread wasn’t massively convinced on him — we all want another attacker, we’d just prefer it to be an actual no.9 than yet another right footed left sided wide attacker

Aren't Liverpool up for sale as well? How can they afford this but we can't... hmmm....remembers who runs our club. Mystery solved.

The bitterness on this page does make me giddy with laughter on occasion:

Antony scores 8 in 23 appearances for Ajax last season, has scored only 3 in the Premier League, Nil in the Europa League and costs £80 million.

Gapko scored 12 goals in 27 appearances for PSV in the same season (in arguably a weaker side) , m scored 9 already this season and 5 in the Europa League yet costs only £37 million.

It looks like Liverpool have got the much better deal in a position they needed.
