£210m. Having got rid of about a third of the wage bill, and another £500k a week freed up with Ronaldo gone.

You think it's justifiable to not sign someone to replace the goals we've lost from Ronaldo leaving, just because we spent more than usual in the summer?
I think when we were linked with Gakpo in the summer it was after it became clear we weren’t willing to pay a fortune for Antony, so everyone on here started complaining that we are cheap and he’s just a shitty backup to Antony.

But then we actually did go and spend a fortune on Antony, and now everyone is pissed off we didn’t go and sign this lad anyway. It’s mad.

we were all moaning when Pool spent a fortune on Nunes too cause we didn’t get him!

How about, maybe, let’s wait and see what the club do first? Gakpo might not be our first choice.

I struggle to believe he signed for them instead of us, so hopefully we never wanted him.

A striker to replace the two that left.

All well and good spending 250m but when 80m of that could have been 40m if we were efficient, and when it's just replacing outgoing players from the squad (Mata, Lingard, cavani, Matic etc), then it's easy to see why it's not enough.
Most people on here didn’t want Gakpo in the summer and it’s only now that Liverpool signed him under the radar that everyone is moaning. We clearly need a striker but let’s just wait and see if we sign an actual striker before freaking out over a player most people didn’t even want?

Honestly could not see where he would fit in given the current options we have! It’s obvious what we need and that’s an out and out goal scorer

Im fine as long as its not a poundland striker.

Im under the impression if we really wanted him we would of got him.

During the WC I saw nothing spectacular so wasn't bother whether we got him or not.

We'll obviously go for a striker in January but at this stage nobody would be able to guess who as it's slim pickings out there.

I bet all the worms are crawling out of the woodwork now.

The same fellas who don't understand why we would be interested in Gapko in the first place -- are now slagging off the club for being gazumped by the Scousers.

The Caf in a nutshell.

Have to say the fee looks great for a player who has been putting up the numbers that he has. He should suit Liverpool very well with their direct quick attacks.

For us, it didn't make as much sense. He's like a clinical version of Rashford whereas we need a 9 or a playmaker.

Absolutely baffled why anyone outraged here.

If we were in Liverpool position and bought him everyone would be saying he a panic buy.

Fans expecting us to buy him, when we just got Anthony, have a on fire rashford playing, have garnacho breaking thru,.......and have a 80mil player there in Sancho who shown more than Geskpo every shown at any stage of their careers.

Strange people are upset about it

First, you can thank Ronaldo for leaving us stranded like the petulant cnut he is.

Second, Martial is always picking up untimely injuries and doesn't always show consistency when fit.

Third, Sancho is quickly approaching the "lost cause" territory with the recent exile. What are the odds that he comes back even stronger if ever?

Fourth, there is a severe shortage of quality among strikers worldwide. The very few good ones available will be overpriced as a result.

How do you want us to get out of trouble with our striker woes? I personally preferred Gakpo because paying the rumored amount for him would have been better business than overpaying a striker in the current context (lack of quality, overpricing due to high demand).

How the feck are you annoyed at ending up with Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Antony while missing out on Darwin Nunez

If you didn't piss yourself at this sort of reaction, you'd be sectioned.

Being upset at getting 3 of our best 11 is legit laughable.

Yeah right after the De Jong fiasco. Good example.
I'm not disputing our transfers aren't often protracted, but there was literally an example from the summer where we got a deal done quickly without months of rumours. Casemiro was a seperate transfer from de Jong.

Another example was when we signed Van de Beek. Perhaps an indicator that getting a deal done quickly isn't always the measure of a successful transfer. An easy deal doesn't necessarily mean the right deal.

Justifiably.

We chased him in the summer. The player practically begged to join us, more than once. We still couldn't get it done.
I mean maybe if we were being "begged" by the player then it's not that we couldn't get it done but just chose not to?

We have invested a lot of money in the wide positions recently and we have good prospects there also so we didn't need another.
We need a striker so I hope Erik has his eye on someone and not just a stop gap signing or a 30yo journeyman.

I think could be great for Liverpool sadly.
For those who thinks he's not a striker, I think he has all the tools to become one, from little what I've seen at the World Cup.
He's quick over short distance, good finisher with feet and headers, and he got the size to play upfront (he's 6'3"). He's a strange one as a winger cause I don't think he got the dribbling ability and pace to be one, but played there because he's an excellent crosser of the ball.
I believe he'd end up as a striker for sure, like I mentioned above, got all the tools to become one. What I don't know if all that translate to become the main striker at a top club.

He’ll no doubt be a huge success at Liverpool, but I can’t pretend not to be disappointed. We should’ve have nabbed him when he was begging to join us, I can’t see taking Felix on loan will be as effective somehow.

What a bloody joke!

He should have been ours . This kid will be elite. We have fecked up massively not signing him :(

We could've got both if we signed Antony when his price wasn't so high. But we dicked around trying to get FdJ like bellends.

Ultimately that's on both, Ten Hag and Murtough for prioritising like nonces.
Is this actually true? Didn't Antony and Eth come out and say the player told Ajax he wanted to leave since Jan and United made and offer to Ajax much earlier than most thought.

Everyone acting like we were the mugs of the summer transfer window in a year where three of the players we signed (Licha, Eriksen and Casemiro) have already become pretty integral to the side and another one is a high-performing first-team regular (Antony) is absolutely hilarious.

It's too early to say for definite but right now our hit rate in the summer window is at a minimum 60% (unless you insist on counting Dubravka who has barely played), which is not bad going by any team's standards.

what goals lost? ronaldo was absolutely useless this season

...

And hence feck all goals scored. Top four, or any cup win, are just pipe dreams without bringing someone who can score goals in January, obviously. Striker, winger, tall, short, doesn't fecking matter.

Amazing isn’t it ? Of all the money we wasted over the years this summer is one that we got completely right even if we did have to over pay a bit.

All signings (Antony was injured)have been our best players and Gakpo doesn’t even suit what we need but people acting like we are mugs for not signing him

He plays in the same position as Garnacho and Rashford. Not a big loss. We need a central striker.

Yeah and that ABU media will take pleasure in asking Erik about it pre match tonight

Well in that case I can't understand not getting this deal done before scousers did

What is your take on this deal not happening

ETH wanted him but may have had resistance from the transfer/scouting team. Or maybe the Glazers are just aren't willing to spend that sort of money in January in view of a potential club sale.

Probably told or hinted to the agent that they are unlikely to resolve the matter anytime soon. So PSV couldn't wait to go after the big whale ie United and got what they can from Liverpool.

You throwing in Ruud and I can imagine the communication lines are as optimal as what we have at Ajax.

My worry is that we wont spend the required $$ in January because there is no visibility in the selling of the club from the glazer's perspective at the moment ie no clear prospective buyers yet. So they are unwilling to spend £40+million.

But I really hope I will be proven wrong in the next week or so when the window opens up. Top 4 is within our gasp and we have lost 2 strikers in the last 12months. The greedy cnuts need to loosen up their purse strings just one more time.

I think we haven't been in for him since summer which in that case VVD comments as someone has already pointed out makes sense.

Seen his goal highlights. I've not seen such clean striking of a football, with either foot, and minimal back lift in a long time. The amount of times he cuts in from the left and bends it with power and precision in the top corner from far out.

Now I know people will argue it's only highlights videos but the last time I had seen such spectacular shooting was Forlan before he joined us. Whilst he did struggle here those early videos/goals were exactly the type he continued to score throughout his career.

Gakpo's traits remind me of Greenwood but is fair to say Gakpo has done more in his career than Greenwood had done (before someone steps in to say Gakpo is average and Greenwood was a generational talent).

Well done on depressing those in the CAF
