Been talking shite since before the world cup. Thats enough to not view him as an authoritative source on a billion pound takeover just because he comes from the same country
 
If the Premiership bosses want to remain ahead of the likes of the Spanish, Italian, and French leagues they need owners with deep pockets to purchase our clubs. The Premiership need owners who can afford to buy the best talents the world has to offer to stay ahead of the game. The money and sponsorships will follow the best products on offer. The financial success this will bring also trickles down to other clubs all the way down the football pyramid and keep our leagues competitive and interesting.

To summarise, the deep pocket scenario will not just benefit United (which is mostly my concern as a fan) but general footballing finances in the UK.

I am older then you are but I was too young not to comprehend that for most people money do the talking. For example let's analyse last Overlap's issue about United's ownership

a- Gary Neville. He's a United legend and he's co-owner of a hotel in Manchester + Salford FC. Who is more likely to listen to his 'expertise' and would give him or his mates a job at United, INEOS or Qatar? Who is more likely to invest in the community (ie more hotels thus more competition), INEOS or Qatar?

b- The Stretford Paddock guys. Whom do they mostly cater for (local fans or foreign fans?). Whom does their rival youtube channel cater for (local fans or foreign fans?) Do they like to coddle around ex players (ex lets say Rio) most of whom are in a similar situation as Gaz is? If they take a completely different stand to Gaz would they be invited on the overlap again? Goldbridge (whom I am not a big fan off) tend to do that and he was never invited.

c- Football journalists. They rely mostly on leaks and close contacts with clubs and we all know that United sells. Who is more likely to hire local staff who are friends with these journalists, INEOS or Qatar? Who is feeding the likes of Athletic (Laurie Whitwell works there and he was on the overlap) with nuggets of information, INEOS or Qatar? Would Laurie Whitwell go on Stretford Paddock if these guys end up making him look silly on the Overlap? Why is Whitwell invited rather then Keegan?

So true. The rest of the leagues will be coming after the PL soon. We are the current super league. They either want to chip away at it for their own survival or want to destroy its hegemony.

In several windows the Glazers backed the club and United had the biggest overall spend in the the league. They’ve had LVG & Mourinho as manager
 
I don’t get what all the fuss about Qatar is.

1. Whatever happens with United makes no difference to women’s/gay rights in the UK (and is if the law is the issue with such rights in Qatar - it goes much deeper than that, so thank your lucky stars)

2. Qatar owning United is not really ‘doping’ United is the biggest club in the world. Anyone with a bit of money and know-how should be able to run it so that it’s at the top. Qatar just give that a bit of extra back-up.

3. It’s fine to think the WC shouldn’t be in Qatar for reasons of human rights etc, (as that is a state-run event held in that state), and simultaneously see that some Qataris owning United is different. It is different. Didn’t your previous CEO/Chairman have a thing for hanging around women’s toilets?

…Football is better when you stick to football, or you’ll get your mind in all sorts of bother.

Yeah, however hollow you think such gestures are, you can expect to see More 'Equality' slogans, better funding for the womens team, MG never playing for the club again - if the Qatar bid succeeds, notwithstanding the words about the ownership not being planned as 'advertising' and being simply an investment. Whatever the merits of objections to Qaar associated ownership, it doesnt do those arguing for this line any favours when they pointblank don't engage with how clubs run by affiliates of ME states have actually behaved.

There are also sufficient issues with human rights (and workers rights in particular) in these states, without people cheapening their cases and discrediting themselves by positing that lgbt peole are just being executed daily in the streets or there haven't been substantial (if perhaps insufficient) 'universalizing' - as distinct, from 'western' homogenizing-- changes around rights and opportunities available to people in Qatar or Saudi.

The biggest macro issues imo are around ownership and the lack of autonomy those without wealth/connections have, displaying more overt versions of the same worker inequalities we find in the US or even UK in postindustrial communities (in terms of working and living conditions), along with forms of quasi-caste system with regards to different categories of migrant workers in particular, though I'm fully admittedly not an expert on the ME...
 
I was on the fence on the ownership issue until now.

Many of us here (and I accept that this is a generalisation) are speaking from a position of social privilege - we don’t necessarily relate to the horrendously cruel experiences of marginalisation and discrimination only to have that reaffirmed when a state owned entity, with an evidenced history of human rights violations assumes ownership of the club you love.

That pain is real. I may not feel it and you may not either but I’m sure there are some who would have to relive the horrors of their marginalisation by virtue of supporting this club.

I’m not saying that there is an ideal owner out there. I’m just trying to make sense of this immense and very real moral dilemma many of us are grappling with, including me.
 
Utd being owned by Qatar is like a wealthy individual who then wins the lottery, those journalists who are against this but were not opposed to the City and Newcastle takeovers are just
playing the morality card because it seemingly suits their agenda of not wanting to see a giant club like Utd become even bigger, and potentially cleaning up year in year out.

Its just the anyone but Utd thing once again, any other club then its no problem, as we have already seen.

This thread would be far less of a shit show if people just admitted they couldn't give a feck about having shady as shit owners as long they dump piles of cash on our doorstep. Instead of getting twisted up trying to justify it from any other angle.

You’re bang on, I would. Players have always done bits and pieces for charity as part of their club work. The clubs probably know that’s the right amount before it detracts from their football. Any more than that is a distraction.

You may not give a feck, but I do. Manchester United is not above my personal beliefs,morals and principles. I don't care if we win another trophy in my lifetime but I care if the club is owned by dictators.

As long as we are owned by a country that treats women and gay people as second class citizens, i will think we have gone from having the worst owners in sport, to losing our soul. Wins will not mean as much, and we will be no better than teams we have spent a decade bitching about.

this is wilful ignorance. Similarly to what is happening with nufc atm, with their legal battles in two continents essentially arguing the PIF isn’t a state instrument in one case, and is in another, the Qatar bid, is state backed. There is no argument that holds any weight and the PL being limp wristed about it changes nothing.

This offer is very close to what is rumoured the Glazers want and it was enough to take things to the next phase. I think that we are closer then we think
