In Central Midfield? Not only are you spouting bollocks, it's not even on the same wavelength.

Behind the striker, as was the focus of discussion. This is the position one in advance of where Cleverley currently plays

Fellaini hasn't even settled yet

what has he played - 3/4 and a half games and you are judging him

this place is fecking laughable

Oh don't forget though, they have been watching every single Everton game before he joined us. Scouting his every move and every trim to his afro.

I would persist with him in a settled side before writing him off, but it's fair to say he has looked quite inadequate so far.

The one thing we DO know is Carrick-Cleverley isn't ideal. I rate Cleverley as a useful and effective squad player, but not as a regular in a two.

In all probability neither is the answer, which is what we've all suspected all along.

He didnt look at all inadequate in his first game. We do need someone special like a Fabregas or similar but we also need the likes of Cleverley and Fellaini as part of a group of cm players in a squad so that we have variety and versatility in the overall squad. Its a long season and we need at least 4 decent cm players to handle the workload of the season, for me we currently have 3.

What does this even mean?! The guy hasn't just been born! We've been watching him play inadequately for Everton for years. At no point did anyone watch him and think "Yeah, this lad would be good for us" because he's just not. Everton was his level where they could lump long balls up to him. At United you have to be able to run (think of Tevez and Berbatov) and you need to be technically good. Fellaini has proved (from his time at Everton and so far at United) that he isn't.

This hopefully will be the first January window where we make a significant signing, because my god do we need it.

This lumping long balls thing is so laughable. They didnt just do that. There was variety. If you have a guy who is very good at bringing down high balls then make use of it. However he played as a CM for them and contrary to the commonly repeated myth he didnt play most of the time up front behind the striker, he played in CM. How on earth does a team constantly lump long balls to a player in CM?. There are some very silly myths being created and repeated on here.

Are you a fecking mind reader or something? I can remember countless posts on here over the course of his career at Everton claiming that he'd be a good addition. Also, by the sound of things, you only watched Fellaini when he played against United, as you're talking out of your arse.

Tevez was often criticized as a headless chicken and/or tryer and Berbatov, for all of his misunderstood genius went to Fulham for 5 million. Hardly stellar examples to use there, Liam.

Either of you read that? I said 'they could'.

Anyway, are either of you two denying the following:
Everton used Fellaini as a target man
Fellaini is technically limited.

You reckon? I always got the impression that Tevez was by far the more popular player until his departure. As you said, Berbatov was bumped off to Fulham for peanuts despite having unreal technical ability, simply because he was so languid.

They used him as a target man on occasion. He spent most of his time being played as a cm, just go back and watch his games. How on earth is being a cm most of the time translated to being a target man. Maybe the only time you watched him was when he was used in that role against us.
Technically limited? exactly how?. He is as good as half our current squad. he can control the ball beautifully with his chest, has decent close control and despite his bad game against shakhtar he has a decent passing range. On top of that he also every now and then pulls out some nice close control skill moves.

I think you have been sucked in to the "whole big man hoof it" routine. One person says it and another repeats it and before you know it its become "facht".....

See I just disagree on his passing. I don't think it's very good and I certainly don't think he has any range. I've never seen him play an accurate long ball. His game against City was summed up when in the last few minutes he just belted the ball down the line, miles ahead of Welbeck(?). He wasn't adventurous and just passed in straight lines. There was no creativity there.

 Why do you think he was sold? His work rate had always been an issue at United. His ability didn't suddenly dip overnight. He's still performing at Fulham.

Because even Welbeck was ahead of him in the pecking order. Thats after Hernandez as well.

Rooney + Berbatov wasnt a good partnership. Rooney + Hernandez is, Rooney + Welbeck is. And we sold him and replaced him with Robin Van Persie, another good partnership.

Berbatov didnt do enough

Tevez was popular during/after his first season because he scored a bunch of goals in big matches. Berbatov didnt manage to do that, instead he was a flat track bully

Just out of curiosity Stack, how much do you rate Ashley Young? Were you so enthusiast when we signed him?

We don't need range. We have range in Carrick. We also have a short pass and move player in Cleverley and a ball carrier in Anderson. We don't need another player in midfield who is hitting 10-25yard lasers constantly.

Fellaini has actually played 2 or 3 long passes so far in his United appearances. They werent particularly convincing, about half the speed of most of our players when they play a long pass, but off the top of my head almost all of them found their target eventually

His short quick transition passing to me has been pretty impressive. Very aware - the way the caf made it out was that he was a league two player trapped in a tall frame. So I went into his passing ability with my mind already set on the fact that he was shit. But was quite surprised when he strung a couple of neat transitions together.

If you've been impressed with his short passing so far at United, I dont know what to say to you. Its not been good and was miles better playing for Everton this season

Transition passing. Trans-ition.

Firstly, Im not hugely enthusiastic about Fellaini, I dont think he is the Fabregas type player we need however I just dont agree with lots of the criticism about him. I think Fellaini will be a useful squad addition but I do prefer Cleverley and think Cleverley will develop like Fletcher did in to a player we appreciate. I cant recall ever saying Fellaini would solve our CM midfield problems, I just disagree with people on his level of ability and also on how people are claiming he was used at Everton. Some of the stuff being said is just imaginary.
.

With respect to Young my first thoughts were good in that I like wingers and he had some pace. I did also think that he lacked the tricks and skill moves and close dribbling control that i think wingers need. I dont remember being overly enthusiastic about Young when he arrived.
Zaha has made a bigger impression with his abilities than Young did on me. Young has just been disappointing for me in terms of providing that x factor in terms of frightening defenders. Valencia is the same in terms of having only a small variety of ways to beat defenders. Valencia however has more defensively which is why he sits ahead of Young for me.
If it was up to me I would be starting with Nani on one side and Zaha on the other. I also think Januzaj is a better option than Young and Valencia.

Transition from defense to attack. Quick passing to get us moving forward after we win the ball back or recycle the ball. Not having to unlock defenses or critically play important passes. Just look up, get the ball forward with a neat ball.

Both players divided the forum membership. Tevez was maybe a bit more popular than Berbatov, though, yeah.

Jesus, let's drop our best midfielder to play two who aren't anywhere near as good. Sounds fecking brilliant to me.

Not my preferred formation of course. But I just wanna see what happens if we try it. Maybe in one of the league cup games.

I guess the difference is that Cleverley has been here since he was 12 years old and it shows.......We may have to wait until the start of next season before we can see what Fellaini can do.......he has looked way out of his depth so far but so have other great players in their first season....fingers crossed Fellaini can become a Utd player.....remember how poor Darren Fletcher looked for about 3 season? The Neville brothers too were a laughing stock at the start of their Utd careers

3 seasons???? Fellaini has been here in England for a while at Everton and with the same manager, he's 26 years old almost, if we have to wait anywhere near that for him to settle in then the media and fans will be asking serious questions. Agree its early days yet for him and he needs time but jesus, at £28m he better settle quicker than 1- 3 seasons!!!

If that does happen, maybe Mesut will call him up and offer advice, because he's taken 3 days and that's new team, new style, new country, new league, new language, new manager.

Unless my memory is failing me, both hit the ground running at the start of their careers. Strange comment.

I'd have thought that the point of being "PL proven", an annoying phrase that was really popular on the Caf during the transfer window, was that he can hit the ground running without needing an entire season to adapt. Moyes had known him for five years, we were told: surely he has to produce the goods.
