As a film studies lecturer I sometimes have to combat some student's views on the films I show or talk about. While I agree that some things come down to a matter of taste, there have been a few instances so far this term where I have been left a bit speechless at certain reactions.

So, over the course of this year I shall be compiling a weekly list of classic films which some of my students think are "rubbish" (their word).

So far I have had:

Romeo and Juliet (Baz Lurhmann)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Dawn of the Dead (original Romero version)
Halloween (Carpenter original)
The Exorcist
Heat
Cloverfield

Oh, and Aretha Franklin can't sing either, apparently.

More to come as the year goes on....

Anyone who thinks Raiders OTL is bad can feck off

Unfortunately Alex I'm not allowed to use such language in a lecture theatre...however, the student concerned may well find some of his grades affected by this though!;) He was also the one who didn't rate Heat, either.

1492 Conquest of Paradise
The Lost Emperor
Sex Power
Belle De Jour
Stealing Heaven
El Mariachi (Original one..simple good movie)
Artificial Intelligence..would've hit the mark had Kubrick been alive
and
The Assignment...less plastic "The Bourne Identity" but not as good as the TV Series "THE BOURNE IDENTITY" staring Richard Chamberlien.
Schindlers list. (modern cretins find it hard to grasp and some rate Titanic the perenial crap better)

127 more to follow.

Heat's average and Cloverfield was wank. As for Aretha they deserrve to die for thinking that alone.

Heat is an average movie but the shootout puts it into another level, haven't seen a scene like that since.

But saying Dawn of the Dead is rubbish is not only foolish its blasphemous.

Cloverfierld, classic suck my dick that is classic

The Labyrinth

Not sure that anybody consider Clovefield to be a classic, because i thought it was pretty average.

Interesting take on disaster/action movies?
Yes.
Hugely Disapointing ending?
Yes.
Classic?
No.

Heat was a brilliant movie. There's no way that film is average, imo. You also have to consider that it's been made 13 years ago and at that time Heat was simply exceptional.

Apart from the shoot out scene, the acting and screenplay was awesome, and the atmosphere created through the music from the Cronos Quartett (I believe) was superb as well.

Okay...Cloverfield may not be of 'classic' status compared to the others mentioned. Perhaps this is the least contentious on my student list so far, but is still a pretty nifty film compared to the mainstream Hollywood fodder which some of my students rate.

Film snob? Me? Surely not....

what was it that you didn't like about the story, ole?
It seemed a bit stupid that they went to go find that girl. Also, once they did find her she had a fecking metal rod stuck through her, very near to her heart, yet she's fine enough to walk around the rest of the movie until she gets killed. That was my main gripe with the movie.

All done before with Blair Witch Project. I reckon I'm the only person who actually liked that film.

Cloverfield you mean? I first didnt like it at all but then I saw it again, on a big screen and with surround, and I thought it was very good.

Blair Witch however scared me to death at some points.

But that's if you really want to stay within the frame of reality.. I mean how much time would it have taken them to climb up 100 or so floors to get up there in the first place. What I didnt like was that their leg-injured girlfriend went all the way up with them as well, as she would have slowed them down enormously. Instead of just waiting downstairs.

Oh come on, faults like these are in every movie.

Though, my feelings towards Cloverfield could be a tad bias as I was majorly looking forward to the film when it was first announced as it has JJ.Abrams (my favourite producer/director guy :D)

But if you're going to shoot it in handycam style, then a sense of reality is already in place. Having it seem like a mid 20s person is shooting forces it to be realistic. Thus, stuff like what I mentioned takes away from it. Had it been shot like any other movie, I doubt it would have bothered me as much.

Give it time Spoons and I'm sure more than one of my 'enlightened' students will gave this the 'rubbish' tag as well!

I really rate Blair Witch as well, so you are not alone!

Havent seen BWP, is it even worth a watch today in 2008? If so then ill be sure to report as many torrents as I find to the authorities....while going on Amazon to order a copy.

Watch it when you are all alone at home. You'll love it.

That's a relief. Most people I've met seem to think it's rubbish. But I really enjoyed it. Although, it's not a film you should watch at the pictures surrounded by shedload of people. I've got it on DVD, and it goes very well with the mockumentary.

I couldn't get into Cloverfield. I guess it depends on your mood.

Yeah, I'd recommend it. But it clearly splits movie watchers, either you'll love it or hate it, Kaos.

A film studies lecturer and you think Cloverfield is a classic? I would quit and demand my money back, it's a disgrace for the real classics out there. Out of the other movies you mentioned I really rate The Exorcist and Raiders Of The Lost Ark as classics. The first one obviously as its performance in it's genre.

And I don't rate Hollywood films.

I'm still studying film. I'll put things into perspective for you, as to the mindset of about about 30% of the class.

Saw II is as good a sequel as The Godfather part II.

Natural Born Killers is the name of an Eminem album.

No films were made before 2002.

That's it.

Heat is a bloody entertaining film.

But Cloverfield is shit.

Thanks for putting things into perspective for us. That really helped. Especially the "no films were made before 2002", which was a revelation.

Mexos - I have revised the way I should have described Cloverfield earlier in this thread. Not a classic by any means, in the sense of the other films I have mentioned.

This will not happen again....:o

Oh, and all black and white films are rubbish as well!

I think its time I got out of this job!

yeah, I should have read on..

Knee-jerking is not my preferably quality in life

A lot of the films named so far aren't really 'classics' to be fair

Controversial as it may be, I'd suggest Taxi Driver, Dr Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange. They just did very little for me
