Christian Eriksen | Signs for Manchester United

Possibly, but Eriksen is much older, will require a significant investment and will have different expectations for role. Whereas DvdB we already have, plus he is the only player in the squad who is already familiar with EtHs system. He seems overall a better bet, and a better use of resources, to me.
Eriksen is miles better. He can dictate the tempo of games. I've never seen that from VDB, he makes intelligent off the ball runs and thats about it.

Well, what if Bruno doesn't get an injury and doesn't struggle in the prem? Then you'll have either one player who's very unhappy because he plays very little, or two players who are unhappy because neither of them play as much as they should. And additionally, a DvdB who doesn't fit anywhere and probably doesn't play at all. All this while there are screaming uncovered needs at almost every other position.

That someone might be useful doesn't cut it - we have so many needs in so many areas that there's got to be some sense of priority here. Going after a player because he's a good player and then sorting out afterwards how to shuffle the pieces is the very essence of a deficient transfer strategy, and exactly what we should be moving away from.

Then you sell players. Stop hoarding them and actually make something back on them. It isn’t a might be useful with Eriksen, he will be.. he is top tier and extremely effective and he is free. If the players play plenty and win trophies, they are generally happy and I think that could be achieved if we make these kinds of signings. We could afford injuries and poor form which is essential at this level. It’s a team game and you fight for each other.

No one is questioning that Eriksen is a good player. I'm still not seeing anyone explaining how such a signing fits into a transfer strategy focused on getting the right players to fill the right roles, addressing the biggest areas of need first and building a sustainable contender.

On the other hand it's extremely easy to see how it might fit into a transfer strategy focused on acquiring big name veterans.

No one is actually free. A good chunk of that fee you don't have to pay ends up being reflected in the signing bonus, agent fee and salary instead.

A player of his quality fits into your system. It’s possibly Bruno struggles to get into a team with him in it. He’d certainly have to get back to his best to stand a chance. That’s how it should be really.

I get they are not free totally.. but he wouldn’t break the bank. He would be a quality addition to the squad and he wouldn’t cost a arm and a leg. He would give us added depth we haven’t had in a long time and bring the competition. We want to compete in all 4 competitions so the games are there, along with injury and form as a mentioned before. No reason these players wouldn’t get good game time.

I don't get the logic personally, unless he's happy to just start Europa League.

I think he is a wonderful player but I cannot see a midfield of him, De Jong and Fernandes not being overrun against the better teams myself.

Unless we play a diamond but we don't really have the full backs for that.

If the bolded part means "a player of his quality fits into whatever system you have", then again that is to me an expression of a flawed transfer policy that looks for good players and then try to make the resulting mix work rather than doing it the other way around. And if the upshot is that our best player and the central cog of our attack is made redundant, what does that say about our sense of priorities....

no chance Bruno gets made redundant. We would use both players. As fergie used to say if your good enough, you play. You pick on form and output, not a name or default, or to fit tactics of course depending on opposition. Learning off someone like Eriksen isn’t a terrible thing, I actually think Bruno can go up levels.

On a free, proven he can keep up in the PL, decent age of 30. At a time when we need some serious numbers coming in?

Yes please. We need to be smart with transfers now in the next few windows. Can’t throw 50million+ on every player.

I'd go for Eriksen over DJ right now.

It appears all our transfers are held up waiting on outcome of this deal, which is just pathetic.

United never learn from their mistakes, just repeat them under a different umbrella.

Supposedly turned down Brentford’s contract proposal. I expect he’ll have a few clubs after him. Hopefully we’re one of them.

He hasn't, in fact him and his girlfriend were having dinner with Thomas Frank in Copenhagen the other night. He is, however, off on holiday now so don't think a decision is imminent.

If we'd sign Perisic and Bissouma, none of them would be good enough for us. Apparently everybody who signs for the other teams are great players. Chill guys.

i wouldn’t want them here.. doesn’t mean there not good players. Tottenham do mean business, they will be decent next season.

Was he good for Brentford? I only remember him being decent for the first 10 minutes against us and then invisible for the remaining 80 minutes.
The short answer is yes, he basically revived their end to the season after January. Of the 11 games he featured in, they won 7 and drew 1.
If you look at Brentford’s form before and after he arrived it’s quite telling, personally I think he made a massive difference.. especially given the way they play and his range of passing.

He was excellent in most games but had a couple of stinkers too - sadly Leeds being one of them. He was part of the upturn in form but not the single catalyst of it, getting David Raya back around the same time made a massive difference too and being able to play our first choice defence regularly. He still is an absolutely quality player though.

That actually amounts to an argument you just get good players and use them, as opposed to building a clear system and recruiting players to fit specific needs and fulfill specific roles. I disagree with that 100%. It is the root cause of everything that's been wrong with United's recruitment during the past decade.

Eriksen on a free makes too much sense. Which means it’ll probably not happen.

Can’t see him going back to Spurs, didn’t they feck him about before he left?

He's certainly miles better than the Bruno of last season. In general Bruno badly needs competition and I fancy Eriksen to displace him. Would love to see him play for us. We need that clever passer who can dictate play, knows when to slow it down and when to speed up etc. All those things you want from a playmaker and which Bruno can't do.

Barcelona player Frenkie de Jong is believed to be the club's top midfield priority…

But it is understood talks between United and Barcelona have some way to run and the Premier League club have other options, of which Eriksen is one.”

No thanks. Thought both of them would be too much like good business. Not this club.

The article says he’s an alternative to De Jong

Yeah and that makes sense. As I said in my earlier post, I don't see how you can have so many 8's at the club and it work out for everyone.

I can't remember the last time Eriksen played in a midfield two, so if that's going to happen we definitely need to go out and buy a #6 surely? However, I see the logic in Eriksen as an alternative to De Jong to some extent. Even if I feel De Jong is much more tried and tested as one of two deeper midfielders.

They wouldn't offer a deal if he was an after thought.

I just posted in the DeJong thread that he could be an interesting option as the deep playmaker in a double pivot. Although that would make signing a top DM an absolute priority Because he would need a partner who can carry almost all the defensive burden due to his declining mobility.

Perisic plays on the left wing. If Sancho plays on the right than Perisic would be the best Manchester United left wing player. Bissouma plays in midfield.. that is where McT starts for Manchester United. Bissouma would be a huge improvement. We dont really need Perisic but both players are good enough for the current Manchester United.

He'd be a great free signing, can't imagine his wages would be extortionate either.

Silly if he's an alternative, though. Get both.

Could see Fred, De Jong and Eriksen work very well in a three. Bruno has no business being a cemented starter the way he's played the last two years.
