Christian Eriksen | Signs for Manchester United

Most people were saying VDB would be the DM when we signed him in a DVB-Pogba-Bruno midfield too.
Turns our DVB he was Bruno alternative, enough with the mental gymnastics, Eriksen is always the most advanced midfielder in trio and so is Bruno, to fit together in a team one would have to play wide or as a false 9, except if ETH wants to play a City type double 10 system.

Nah Eriksen was very deep for Brentford. He’s a flexible, technical player who can play a number of different positions in the centre of the park or out wide.

It’s these qualities that make him an excellent pick up.

Has it been about 2 weeks now since the 'verbal agreement' and we still haven't got his signed?

How is that possible?

It's almost like they are completing stringent medical examinations on a player who died on the pitch last year.

We played half of the season and got to a Champions League with a Carrick-Giggs midfield, and you're saying we cannot play a Frenkie-Eriksen-Bruno midfield. Of course we can, the same as City plays Rodri-Silva-KdB. It's a matter of the setup.

frenkie Eriksen would be pretty sexy. Just depends it can be defensive enough. Would play some nice attacking football though

Eriksen is one of the players that can turn defence into attack quickly. Very good turnover player. I could easily see him slotting in next to FDJ or playing further forward. He will definitely start though.

I wonder how a diamond would look.

If you want to pretend football is the same game it was in 2011 then have at it.

Yeah Eriksen's not the same player he was at Spurs anymore. Arguably he never played in midfield at Spurs anyway - Alli always occupied the most advanced position.

Who knows, but we've seen similar with Pogba and Di Maria to Juventus so it's not that weird.

Yup its a lazy comparison. Regardless of if they were tackling midfielders or not, Carrick and Busquets were defensive midfielders, they just happened to be really good at passing too.

De Jong is not a DM and I'm not even sure if Eriksen is a CM as he's always played more of an attacking midfield role. I know we want to see all our new toys in the same team but I really don't see a midfield of FDJ, Eriksen and Bruno.

What do you think needs adding to that midfield for it to be more balanced

There's more to being a defensive midfielder than tackles, that's far too basic of a comparison. Carrick who you bolded is a perfect example, his strength was cutting off the lines and making interceptions.

All our current lot have okay tackling stats but they let attackers run through them easily. Our lines get broken because players don't shield and cut off the passing lanes.

Erickson, FDJ, Bruno would have the same issue as they're not that type of player.

The ideal guy to cut off passing lanes would be Rice, however no chance he is going to move this summer. His best mate being at Chelsea will also make it difficult as well.

Yeah, but how extensive those medical examinations have to be before everything is done? I don't think Brentford would be that negligent if there was something else underlying when they went for him.

I mean what else than a normal medical can you do with his unit implanted?

turn it off? try and spook him ?

I'm imagining how he would have fared if he was in the mix today and let me tell you - he was brilliant.

Some great one-touch passing with Bruno and Martial. Found Sancho in space on numerous occasions and pressed from the front for the entire half hour he was on the pitch.

Great signing.

Since rumours surfaced that he's chosen us... Has there been any news/rumours? Has he even been spotted or is he hiding in Middelfart?

It was a great debut

What measurable qualities do you speak of? Tireless running with mediocre outcomes? Fletcher and Park were levels above them and weren’t regular starters for the club.

Obviously I don’t think this new midfield is good enough to win the league, but it is a great starting point to compete for top 4.

I just went to look at Fred's stats. 3.6 tackles (49% success-rate) and interceptions per game:

Pogba - 2.1 tackles (68% success rate) and interceptions per game

McT - 2.5 tackles (54% success rate) and interceptions per game:

Eriksen apparently averaged 3.2 tackles and interceptions at mighty Brentford at LCM, while offering impressive control and offensive threat. They also drastically improved their results and possession stats after Eriksen joined:

De Jong averaged 2 tackles (70%+ success rate) and interceptions per game as CM and despite Barca’s higher possession stats. I’ll agree that the proof is in the pudding as to whether he can make the PL transition defensively.

Bruno averaged 2.2 tackles (53% success rate) and interceptions per game:

As for the DMs who played in recent title-winning sides - Michael Carrick averaged 2.3 (but includes stats from his attacking days and declining years), Fabinho 3.2, Fernandinho 3.7, Kante 5.3(!), Casemiro ~5, Busquets 3.4. Meanwhile, muppet favourite Ruben Neves averaged 3.6 (similar to Fred).

So yes, in my opinion there is every reason to believe that a midfield trio of Eriksen, De Jong and Bruno is more balanced than the previous one of Pogba + Bruno + Mc/Fred. If Eriksen and De Jong can average 2.8 as a double pivot they would be on par, if not better, than a Pogba + Mc/Fred pairing defensively, while offering more in terms of control and attacking output.

Individually - if Pogba plays, he’s a massive defensive burden and loses the ball too often in dangerous positions. if McT/Fred plays instead, they are a control and attacking liability.

I meant ball-winning tackles. And Fletcher was incredible at them , no not sure why you are quoting him. If we go by stats, I am sure McFred does good amount of tackles too but we often lose the ball and dont win back in our own half.

<<So yes, in my opinion there is every reason to believe that a midfield trio of Eriksen, De Jong and Bruno is more balanced than the previous one of Pogba + Bruno + Mc/Fred.>>
There is no way it is better may be De jong, Bruno/Eriksen , Mcfred is probably okay because as per people De jong is press-resistant. But again we will see in few months dont we.

Going to be interesting to see where he plays. I'm almost as excited to see him as i am De Jong. He'll be the best Passer in the squad, so We'd have to fit him in somehow.

Surely

De Jong Eriksen
Sancho Bruno Rashford
Martial
Wouldn't work?

Your right it would'nt work with that personel, I suspect he will play this formation with a double pivot, but have someone more defensive minded next to FDJ (IF he signs), with Eriksen further forward i.e.

FDJ Fred
Bruno Eriksen Sancho
Martial/Rashford

Rice would have been ideal next to FDJ but much more attainable next summer when his price comes down. Playing Eriksen and more specifically Bruno further forward will allow them to take more 'risks' with their creativity, which is needed but not at the expense of giving balls away in area's where it will hurt us, and make us vulnerable to the counter attack.

I'm more worried about Rashford and Martial than that midfield

I get that his medical might be more stringent than the usual, but this is taking a lot longer than I thought to be concluded. I found it odd that his agent said something to the effect that they won't rush to conclude the deal, along with what the Brentford manager said. Part of me is wondering if it's as sure as made out.

What did Brentford manager say?

What did Brentford manager say?

I'm paraphrasing a bit, but after the news that Eriksen had apparently chosen us and informed Brentford, he said he's not spoke to him at all but just read what was in the papers. He said he's still waiting to hear his decision etc. Bearing in mind he was supposed to be the first person Eriksen would communicate his decision to, out of respect.

Aha. But given Eriksen is doing medicals I dont think the whole deal can go back.

That Brentford manager is a bit of a cnut though isn't he? I remember him being a bit shirty about us when we played them last season.

The guy needs to fecking cut his hair sensibly, short back and sides, and grow the feck up.

So what’s going on here then? How is it taking this long to conclude the deal it was 10 days ago since he apparently agreed to join us.

Possibly, but it would still be an odd lie. What is he gaining apart from pissing on United supporters chips a bit? He's giving Brentford fans hope at the same time too.

I'm wondering if Eriksen isn't delaying to see if Spurs come back for him. Perhaps they said they might be interested depending on whether they can sign this or that player.

2 weeks for medicals though? I bet they could be done in a day privately. Who has reported that he's undertaking medicals and when did they say it?
Well you're aware he nearly died so they've probably thorough about it.
I dont think it can be done in a day privately. What does privately mean anyway?
And it hasnt been 2 weeks of medicals, its 2 weeks since he decided to come to United, medicals were few days after that.

Maybe we're waiting other deal so we can announce both, who knows.

Probably medical/insurance issues being sorted in the background.

Maybe the company we use are refusing to cover him? who knows tbh.

I think pretty every major journalist confirmed the deal

Would be surprised if it doesn’t happen
