Chris Smalling to Newcastle?

If selling Smalling and someone like Lingard pushes the Sancho funds over the line then I'll carry them to whichever club comes in for them myself.

The point here is that many don't think Smalling is good enough for the starting XI, including our manager and coaches - this is a fact.

The way that people rave about him you'd think he should be compared to other top CBs and not the likes of Rojo and Jones.

Personally I’d have him in the team ahead of Lindelof, that’s not to say we can’t improve on Smalling, and we need to, and we still need to buy a centre half.

- but none of the CBs we have bought over the past 10 years have been better than him bar Maguire.

Clearly the bar of Jones, Bailly and Rojo is extremely low. All need to go.

Ideally I’d take Maguire, new starting CB, Smalling and Lindelof for next season.

I think Ole will absolutely snap the hand off anyone who will offer 20 million for a player who will be 31 in 3 months, and use the cash to go towards possibly Sancho and to reinvest in superkids such as Benoît Badiashile.

I feel Lindelof is underrated, even though he has outperformed his partner on a number of occasions last season, his downfall is that he doesn't compliment well with Maguire.

Smalling would be a good solid signing for a mid to lower Premier League club.

Feels like a Newcastle/West Ham signing

I think that’s fair, and your right he and Maguire do not compliment each other.

You mean the same experts that none of the European major clubs are interested in him, including our current manager and coaches?
He’s playing for a decent side right now, if we took him back he would likely be our second best defender.

Don't Newcastle already have like 10 good CBs? They had that spell in the first half of the season where the CBs scored most of their goals. They don't concede many either.

Well many ‘experts’, including our manager and coaches clearly don’t agree.

Funnily enough the experts that actually manage the elite clubs won’t consider buying Smalling either - I wonder why

His age most likely. Hes had a good spell in Italy, you talk like he’s a championship player.

Point being, if we go heavy for Sancho and don’t have funds for a CB he is a very good option to have.

You must be the ‘expert’ one on here then - got it

Surely Smalling could do better than that. I know he is limited in passing, but he’s better than anything Everton or even West Ham have.
What do you mean better than that? Newcastle are a Premier league team. Don't be arrogant.

Why not just buy a centre back for the Smalling money instead? Those options that we've been most linked with seem quite cheap deals, with a high resale value (important to the owners). Economically speaking. In a football sense, it's a no brainer, we need more quality there.

So which is it then? You were the one replying to my initial post about ‘experts’ who’ve written him off on here for years.

You either rate him or you don’t lad. Get it said.

Yeah I agree that would be the better option. But we don’t seem to heavily linked with any CB’s yet do we?

I would be gutted if we don’t get one of these top French young CB’s.

Plus, I suppose, any money generated from sales could go towards plugging the gap on the Sancho deal?

Perhaps re-read my post again, not hard to understand.

So are Brighton. Doesn’t mean Smalling should join them. He’s just been one of the best players for Roma this season, so it’s a big drop off going to Newcastle.

We've been linked with Pau Torres, Gabriel Magallanes and Benoit Badiashile. Unfortunately, we've not been linked at all with a move for the real deal, Upamecano. But that we're being linked with so consistently with centre backs can't be just paper talk.

I responded to that answer. He’s the wrong age for top clubs to commit to him. It’s different for us becuase he’s our player and doesn’t cost us a bean to keep him another year.

I’d either sell him and use those funds on one of these young French CB’s or keep him for one year if we don’t have funds for a CB on top of the Sancho deal.

Agree Dayot is the real deal. Can’t help but feel this will be like Varane over again and we lose out and watch him turn into a great player. :(

If Smalling is really at the elite level then I'm sure there'd be plenty of top clubs won't hesitate paying 20m for a 30 year old CB, when Koulibaly is valued at 70m+ who is only a year younger.

I too would sell him and use the funds for a new CB.

It’s not that he’s ‘elite’ whatever that means. But for £20m we couldn’t buy a better squad player.

We don't need any more squad players, we need to bring in a first choice CB.

Smalling out of all our squad CBs will get us the most money, I'd prioritise selling him based on this reason alone.

I agree we need a new starting CB, but we need rid of Bailly, Jones and Rojo. Get rid of then, and He would be very useful.

I agree he’s the only one we can get money for.

I like Smalling, he is a good defender, great spirit, good attacking threat from corners, always involved in the game, gets the crowd going.......but in the flip side his passing isn’t great and he pulls way too many shirts.(VAR)....I think he is worth 25m and if a premier league team will pay it, rather than 10-15 from Italy...let’s take it and wish him the best...

Your argument is pointless. If Roma value him as a top player why are they not paying what United want for him? May be you are overrating Smalling, may be Steve Bruce and Newcastle value him properly.

Given the level of defending I’ve witnessed in Europe’s top competition this season I’d keep him unless a proper offer arrives.

Defenders who can defend are undervalued.

Because Roma dont buy top players. If you look at what they've done, they're a selling club buying a bit lower in the market and then selling at a profit. The exceptions are their own youth products, they've kept plenty of them and they've gone on to be very good players. So while they'll look to sell a lot of their players on for a profit, the likes of Zaniolo and Pellegrini would be hard to get.

How does Smalling fit into this? Well he doesn't. They arent going to sell him at a profit. They've bought good players from the top premier league teams before like Kolarov and Dzeko but they were a couple of years into their 30s and cost less than 10 million euros. They still went on to be Roma's best players... If Smalling was available for less than 10 million euros they'd take him for sure. Double that doesn't really fit into what they've been doing. That said they wasted a lot of money in the mid level last summer... And half their team in the past season was on loan, with a commitment to buy them this summer. So they have that to pay.

They bought Diawara for 21 million euros last summer, he's been linked with Arsenal so maybe they'll get a slight profit on him even though hes not that impressive.

Because Roma don’t pay £25m or whatever for someone who is 30.

Yes, your argument is pointless. Smalling is too good for Newcastle.
