I have always liked Smalling. So much respect for him as a person and as a footballer. Underrated defender and always a good option to have... but for the love of God, just sell him.

Nobody can afford our players though. Nobody wants to pay the likes of Jones, Lingard, Rojo's contract and a transfer fee.
Id give them away for free to get the wage of the books. Or loan them out free until the contract is up if the club paid the wages

So no stats then. Cool story bro...
What stats do you want?

If we look at Whoscored historical stats, Bailly has played 10194 minutes, which corresponds to 113 matches in his career (all cup matches not in this data). In this time he got 5 red cards. That equals one red card every 22.6 games.

Both Lindelof and Maguire have played more matches, but none of them has got any red cards.

Ramos is famous for his red cards. He has played corresponding 433 matches and has 15 reds. That equals one red card every 29 games.

Again: all matches are not included in this stats.

We would happily give jones and Rojo away for free. No one wants them. I wouldn’t have given Bailly a new contract either. We should have let all three go when their contracts expired, now we are saddled with their wages, and the value of them being at the club is pathetic.

It’s not your story dude.

Lingard, and perhaps even Rojo at that time, were fine to offer new contracts to. They should have been on sensible wages though, like they would have gotten at any other club. Then if it didn't work out we would likely be able to sell them.

Edit: Re-reading your post I think you're talking about Bailly rather than Lingard being the third player. He's still on the same wages as what he was when he joined I think since it was just an extension rather than a new contract. I'm 50/50 about keeping him. On a good day he's the best of our injury-prone brigade, but on a bad day he's the worst and if I remember correctly he's injured even more often than Jones.

Yes Bailly.

Lingard has been a useful player, and at the very least is usually fit, bar a couple of small injuries. No issue with him contract extension (although wages are too much).

You are right, I was referring to Bailly - we should have released him when we had the chance.

Keeping these three means, we have to sell Smalling to balance the books, and without them we could easily buy a decent centre back instead we have three crocks that can never be relied upon, and even on the odd occasion they get on the pitch, they are utterly dire.

How are people going to feel when we end this transfer window with a net spend of £0?

Depends.

We've already brought in VDB for 40m (call it that for convenience's sake).

We then buy Sancho for 120m.

We then slap a Pogba mask on Phil Jones and sell him to PSG for 100m.

Then we buy back Fellaini from Shandong Longdong Whatever for 50m.

Then we slap a Messi mask on Messe Lingard and sell him to Shandong Longdong Whatever for 1p (they will rightly consider it something of a bargain, and in the euphoria won't notice that the selling club isn't Barcelona, not least since we paid so much for Fellaini).

Then we slap a Phil Jones mask on Fellaini and sell him to PSG for 110m (plus 1p). PSG are idiots, they'll gladly spend that much on Jones (or Jonah, as we'll sell him as), especially if he comes wearing a Fellaini mask *.

And - Bob's yer uncle.

Probably screwed up the numbers, there - but hey, it's Friday and I have accordingly started drinking.

* I mean, especially if he comes as Fellaini wearing a Jonah mask. Or the other way around - at any rate, they'll be too confused to make a fuss about details.

Yeah, I also feel abit sorry for him to be caught in such limbo. But covid19 economy means every euro is precious for every club.

Same way as they always have.. heat on Glazers / Woodward during the transfer window.

Some bad results and Ole out.

Club PR spin by hiring Poch, then saying DoF to follow, then saying we will build.

Fans get excited hearing that, start thinking we will sign 3/4 WC players until 2 weeks to go of another transfer window with nothing done.

He does play well when he's fit though. All his injuries seem to be different which suggest he's not got a long-term injury problem.

It's just whether we can afford to keep someone that only plays 20 games out of 50. It is normal now though, for United to have 4 CB's permanently recovering from injuries!

That's one of the major plusses about Maguire, he plays every week and brings an element of consistency to our defensive play.
He doesn’t play that well to be fair, but he is okay.

Jones injuries also have all been different but he is never fit. My thinking (for both of them) is that they are so rash at what they do that they injure themselves so easily.

In any case, regardless of their reasons, if they are never fit, nothing matters. They cannot be relied to do a job.

Never said it was. Nor do you need to tell stories for other people.

Anyways back on thread, Smalling won’t be here very soon, so people can move on.
I’m not really sure what you’re talking about. Someone wrote Bailly was a red card waiting to happen, you said that was talking crap bla bla show me the stats. I gave you the stats. Statistically Bailly gets red cards very often.

Yeah, he always suffered by being lumped in with Jones, but he's generally done ok for us, certainly well enough for a cheap punt from Fulham who came up through non league football. But its time to move on, best for both the club and him.

Like I said not your story. Move on and it’s not Eric’s thread.

Do you know how forums work? Serious question. They aren't one-on-one conversations.

Somebody made a claim, you said they were talking rubbish and asked for stats, somebody else gave you those stats which showed the first person was right, you get super bitchy.

Pretty sure this is the Smalling thread. If you wish to continue the off theme stuff send me a message.

It’s not really up to you to decide what other people are allowed to read or write. Next time you jump in to someone’s “story” you should take it in a private chat if you have problems with the the forum idea that more than you can write here.

Yeah cool story, enjoyed the read, time to move on....

I've never seen the Smalling thread this boring, lack of action forces it i guess:lol:

Oh he’s gone just a matter of time. Roma still very keen to sign him and I’m near 100% certain it’ll happen. United will get their fee, Roma just trying to get him for €5 million cheaper.

We should not sell him as we don't have option. Lindelof should be finished after his last two games for us.

Smalling was a beast at stopping crosses and loose balls getting into the box, how has Lindelof convinced the club that he's a better centreback I can't understand it.

There's been a few of us saying this for a while, but he's easily our best defender.

Need to defend first

What pisses me off more is that Ole wouldn't drop Lindelof and give Smalling a fair chance. If Smalling stinks up the joint well then fair enough but at least give him 90 minutes next to Maguire to see how that partnership works out.

Thats whats even more appalling about the whole thing. Smalling, lindelof and Tuanzebe should have fought for the right to partner Maguire. Instead Ole gave lindelof the job and promoted Axel whilst relegating Smalling to 4th choice. Did he think Lvg and Jose were idiots for continually starting Mike?

The fact some are pining for Smalling shows how crap our defence is, last thing I remember is him falling over his own feet, and then passing to the linesman.

Well he gave Lindelof the job because apparently he can play out from the back, the thing is most of the time our cbs pass to our midfielders or Shaw anyway, something Smalling could very well do so Ole is fooling himself thinking Lindelof is a better passer than Smalling. I've seen Lindelof on numerous occasions hoof the ball upfield under pressure and not play out from the back, something that Smalling would get crucified for doing.

If he's not being sold then we need to play him. For all his faults he's better than Lindelof and just had a good season of football

This is the annoying thing if there was a huge impact on our attacking play I would be fine with things. But as it stands there is no difference at all. As you say we still have our cb's giving the ball to the fb's or the closest midfielder.
