Cheltenham Festival 2013

That was a damp squib of an end to a memorable day. Uncle Junior has ousted Oscar Whisky as my most pathetic backed horse of the festival.

I'll be taking one last swing with Coral's refund on the first race tomorrow and hope the free bet is credited in time for the Gold Cup.

1:30 Kashmir Peak (possibly sticking an EW cover on Far West)

3:20 Silviniaco Conti

If Kashmir Peak brings me £120, my betting slip will getting more action, oh yes.

You lads get tips anywhere, or just go by what you know?

I've lost a few quid over the last two days (nothing major, I'm not a better, have only lost about 15/20 quid!), and looking to try to make it back tomorrow.

Have a tenner to blow. 5 each on Silviniaco Conti and Des Champs? Or any suggestions for me? I know nothing about horse racing, just doing it for a bit of fun!

Tips? Makes no difference. The pro tipsters were way off today. As the were the favourites. I just pick something I like the look of, see how many on Twitter are thinking the same and go from there. And that fails less than it works.

Solwhit was the one from today where I got a lot of good vibes just before the race and changed to him. Similarly, despite being favourite, there was a lot of negativity around Oscar Whisky as the race drew near.

Kashmir Peak tomorrow? No reason for that other than I fancy starting the day with the chance of £120. Twitter is already telling me to play safer with Far West. Of course, that's not 'safe'. Nothing apart from Sprinter Sacre and Hurricane Fly has been.

Right lads, who's winnin the Gold Cup then?

I think I'm going for Silviniaco Conti and Long Run each way in the Gold Cup tomorrow. They are the right age and won the Betfair chase and King George respectively (decent indicators).

They both seem equally likely, as I said I can't bet on BW because his last run was December and I think I'm right in saying that very few former winners have had that kind of preparation.

His last run was in December, surely that's got to be an issue?

I might have read this about someone else, but I thought it was him who was one who goes off better fresh. I'll check.

EDIT:
Silviniaco Conti is as good a jumper as you could wish to see and he has kept up a relentless gallop in easier races at similar trips but BOBS WORTH (nap) has been so strong at the finish in better company that he can lay bare any late weakness in either that one or Sir Des Champs. The latter still has to prove his stamina in a strongly run race over this far (albeit the early pace here could be muddling with no natural front-runner in the field) but he looks a stayer and is a serious rival to the selection.

I fancy it.

Get well soon JT, lovely fella.

Likewise.

I've done my conkers on the meeting and I need a good day.

1.30 Diakali (each way) and Far West. The former went too quick last time out and a change of tactics might help. He's over priced. The latter has drifted because Nicholls is having a poor Festival but up until today he's not had any quality running for him.

3.20. Took 10s on Long Run a week or so ago and he's a very solid each way poke. Also backed the fav now the rain is imminent. You'll need a stayer today and those two have the most stamina.

5.15. For Non Stop getting placed yesterday for me at 20s means I have a nice each way double going on Kid Cassidy in the last. He's a bit mental but has been protected for this.

What do you think of Sir Des Champs Nearco?

I actually have a small bet on him at 8/1 ante post but the forecast rain puts me off. I normally top up on the day but if it's soft I don't see him outstaying Long Run or Bob's Worth. On good he'd have a great chance as I think he jumped better than any other horse at the meeting last year (bar Sprinter Sacre I suppose)

1:30 Far West (win) / Hidden Justice (e/w)
2:05 Midnight Game (e/w)
2:40 O'Faolains Boy (e/w)
3:20 Silviniaco Conti
4:00 Salsify

I've swapped Kashmir Peak for Hidden Justice e/w and decided to play safer with Far West for the win. Fully expect KP to romp home now, of course, unlikely as it is.

Backing Salsify will hopefully pay back any losses I accrue beforehand. Not convinced about any of my choices up to then but that's just about today's NAP.

So this 1.30 race is off and I'd already bet on it. Will it go ahead later? Or will my money be refunded?

I'm hoping for Cotton Mill to win this (or top 5) and IL Fenomono to finish top 5 (or win).

It wasn't that good. Honestly, where do bookies get their odds from? I won't even ask about tipsters. Now and again, horses just won't go, but it's happened so often since Wednesday, Pont Alexandre, Oscar Whisky etc.

Hype mainly. A lot of the shorties - Oscar Whisky, Pont, Dynaste had no previous really good Festival form (at the trip in OW's case) and you have to be against them on that basis.

Right, I need Inishisland prefarably to win, but to at least come top 3. Or Bucking the Trend to win, but that won't happen.

Is there anywhere can watch online? Got couple bets on this afternoon and wouldn't mind watching it. Cheers.

Wow, thankfully Ruby Walsh pulled it back and I got third. So got my money back and a little extra.

Decent effort from O'Faolains Boy to take fourth but that's not gonna give me any money.

Serious business for me in the next two races now.

I've a few on SDC each way, and a few on Silviniaco Conti to win. I won't be making much even if it goes well.

That fall was not needed from Silviniaco Conti with the run I'm on.

Loads of blood for Salsify to mop up now.
