Finally, the wait is almost over. The hype surrounding the Festival seems to grow every year. There are more previews, we have Facebook and Twitter awash with tips and banter and we have the usual doubts about running plans for certain horses.
I've been ante-posting on this since June and I have good and bad bets and a few non runners to boot. In fact the count for the latter stands at around minus -£230 before we even kick off. Need a good start.
Tuesday
My best position is in the Supreme Novices Hurdle which opens the Festival where I have hot favourite My Tent or Yours at 12/1 and 10/1. I think he's nailed on and would be a contender for the Champion Hurdle. It's a race that's still worth getting involved in because Hills are paying five places. I have backed Un Atout with that concession in mind. He looks a proper chasing type with a good engine. The ground is likely to be soft now and that will suit him.
I'm not opposing Simonsig in the Arkle although I have a relatively small bet on Arvika Ligeonnaire who can outrun his price.
In the Champion Hurdle I'm against Hurricane Fly and I rate him as possibly the weakest favourite of the week. He lost his crown last season and I don't see him getting it back. He's most effective in a sprint finish type scenario and although there doesn't see a whole lot of pace in the race his opponents surely won't set it up for him. I actually make Zarkandar a fairly strong bet for this. He was never right last season once his yard succumbed to a bug just before the Festival but this term he's been rock solid. I love this animals attitude and fighting spirit and I think the uphill finish and a bit of juice in the ground will really suit him. 7/2 and 4/1 are fair prices in a race his main danger (imo) Grandouet has major bad vibes surrounding him. He's been all over the place on Betfair and has only one run this season. I backed him earlier in the year but doubt he can trouble the selection now.
The other race on the opening day that interests me in the Cross Country thing. I have two for this - Bostons Angel @ 12s and Shalimar Fromentro at a whopping 36/1. I backed the former thinking we would have decent ground but that isn't gonna happen now. The latter has had a few races in France on really deep ground in these sort of races and is overpriced.
