The highly-rated youngster suffered a reoccurrence of the knee trouble that affected his past three seasons and will work at the club’s academy while also studying sports science at university.

Hutchinson made his first-team debut in 2007, with then-manager Jose Mourinho describing him as a future permanent member of the Chelsea squad.

He was called into the England Under 21 set-up but the knee injury forced him to withdraw.

In total Hutchinson started one game for Chelsea and made three substitute appearances.

He must be totally gutted, Knowing your good enough to make it at least Championship standard and having to retire at the age of 21. :(

That's something he will never get be able to get over. I hope he finds a fulfilling career to make it up somewhat :(

What type of knee injury?

Mourinho used to say he had a huge future and a mate of mine who's a Chelsea fan reckoned he was one of the most promosing young players at Chelsea. Big shame.

Poor lad, always a shame when injuries wreck a career, but especially at that age.

Poor lad, must be a horrible thing to deal with after spending the best part of his life building towards a career in the game.

Anyone remember Nicky Wood? He was a United prospect who had to retire with a back injury aged around 21 or so in the late 80's.

That seems like an early diagnosis for a lad of 21, to say he definitely has to retire.

I feel sorry for him though, a real shame.

Doesn't have to be. I had to quit when I was 16. Didn't right away but my knee is way fecked up and specialists don't know how to fix it properly.
There are loads of ways for the body to mess up. He could have been having this problem for years and I thing it's likely that he gets injured a lot for 3-4 weeks in the same place and the doctors finally said enough.

Jose Mourinho also said Chris Coleman was a fantastic young manager who will achieve great things.

Chris Coleman.

Did he have a bad leg break which forced him to retire?

or was that Tony Gill?

Wasn't there also someone coming up the same time as Beckham, Scholes, Neville, etc who everyone said was better but due to injuries he had to retire before he broke into the main squad at a young age?

One aspect of the game that the "they earn far too much money!!!!!" brigade don't tend to consider. Sad.

Possibly Ben Thornley you're thinking of there. Made his debut before any of the lads you mention. Two-footed left winger, considered the next Giggsy but with more aggression. Never recovered from a tackle in a reserve match by Nicky Marker that turned his knee into digestive biscuits. Took him to court over it too.

Thought that was Ben Collett?

Is this the same doctor that told Villa he had to amputate his leg?

Made a surprising comeback. Played 45 minutes of the reserve game vs Crawley today.

The team lost 1-6 and Sam conceded a penalty but the fact that he made it back after it seemed all hope was lost is a brilliant news.
