Chelsea are a mess

Mourinho is best with veteran players whose mentality matches his own.

I think he's a terrible match for this current Chelsea squad.

Jose's first title with Chelsea was with a youngish team. I think majority of the players were below 25-26.

You buy him Oshimen and the rest of the team is ready for Jose.

Good defenders, two DM's, a midfield passer, pacey wingers.

I am sure he'll win you stuff. Not sure if he still has it in him to win the two big prizes. But we'll find out.

The correct former manager who could pull this off is Tuchel. Mourinho is a dinosaur and past it.

This is not the summer to be in the manager market, especially when you have a manager who is actually performing and it wasn’t a necessity. Bizarre decision. Every top club in the market in Europe has failed to land their first choice, from Ajax to Bayern to Real. Liverpool too. Two of those clubs have tried to get coaches they let go to reconsider a few months later due to feck all in the supermarket.

Totally different era. It's just not relevant. The kids of football today can't be compared to the likes of Terry and Lampard etc. The mindset is totally different and it can't be ignored. He has ignored it, and its part the reason he's been left behind. The methods of those days just aren't as effective now.

Yeah, different generation of players (and young people) nowadays.

Chelsea aren't in for Mourinho, of course. It's possible he gets a chance at some point at some big club again but quite possible that doesn't happen as well. Portugal NT will be his next (and maybe last) big job as I think it's inevitable Portugal FA will want to try with their best ever manager before he retires. I'd love to see it anyway.

Would like to see Mourinho at Chelsea, yet again, but it doesn't seem very likely to begin with.

I don't think counter-attacking football will ever be 'past it'. Progressive football is trending at a lot of clubs, but I think most clubs still play counter-attacking football. Jose most likely won't get the job as his stock is at the lowest it has ever been, but it would be fun to see him have a go with a big team again.

Yes, that would be a big challenge. Jose will definitely have to adapt his managerial style to fit in with the modern footballer.

Apart from six months in 15/16 Jose in the PL has always benefitted us one way or the other, would rather keep it that way.

Interesting point. The usual talking point is that Jose prefers an older squad, but that Chelsea team were like you say mostly under 26, most even 23-24.

I think experience wise the current Chelsea squad is a bit different. Their squad 04-05 had numerous players who, despite being 23-25 ish, had several seasons experience of being first choice for a team in an top division/European competition already, with 100-200 appearances already (J.Cole, Lampard, Terry, Duff, Gudjohnsen, Carvalho, Drogba, Gallas). Their squad now I think is a couple years away from that, they seem to have a lot of players with more like 50-80 appearances at a decent level. So it's a bit different, but not as much as people might think based on the usual assumption that Jose works best with older players.

The problem is it's completely antithetical to the type of side Clearlake are trying to build. Plus they want someone who will work with the hierarchy and not undermine them at every turn; it's just not going to happen.

Europa Conference league then.

Talk they'd pull out of the competition as it impacts more on FFP with reduced money compared to the other two competitions. We'll see on that.

Do they even want to be in it? They might ask to withdraw like Juventus did.

That was the report a few weeks back. Europa League also gives direct CL qualification winning so won't have that chance either now.

Top 4 or bust for them next season so going to be plenty of pressure on whichever inexperienced coach they'll appoint as for the money they're spending they can't go years without CL income imo.

new manager already knocked out of europe.

They got kicked out, no idea about our ffp for Europe but it's probably not good.

Frankly given how shit we've been this season apart from the last few games... We don't deserve more than conference league.

Doubly when we should have beaten City in the semi.

the 6th placed teams in Slovakia and Hungary better watch out

I guess that’s another trophy we’ll win that some teams in London have never won :wenger:

The only positive for us, is that you get league coefficient points still from Conference League wins, so if we can win it, much better chance the league gets 5 Champions League places next season.

Conference league

What a day!
- winning the FA cup
- beating City against all odds
- getting into Europe
- pushing Chelsea into the Conference League
- and Newcastle out of Europe

It’s going to put you out of business with the new UEFA rules!

Depends how the others do. We could've won the Europa Conference this season but wouldn't have been good enough for 5th with everyone else crashing out before the SFs.

José was a young manager in 2004

That's the spirit.

Looks like its going to be De Zerbi

United will play in the Community Shield vs City instead of Arsenal.

For some it would be a mess but for us it's just another season. Looks a bit grim at the moment but I think we'll be alright.
