Just signed Badiashile from Monaco for £35m - on a 7.5 year deal.
7 and a half years is a bit excessive isn't it? Presumably done for amortisation reasons?
It'll help retain his value & ensure he doesn't leave on a free transfer, just like Phil Jones, Bailly etc. Good work by Woody tying Badiashile down. Oh wait...
How does this work for the player?

Signed a contract ensuring increasing wages by X amount per year? Happy with 50k a week for 7.5 years? They've gave him mega money to start with?
From a brief search on the web, a part of the reason Chelsea are doing this is for FIFA financial fair play reasons and why they can afford to go on such a spending spree we've seen since Boehly took over. By signing the players up to a longer contract, they can spread the cost of the transfer fee in the accounts by the length of the contract (ie. player costs £20m, 5 year contract, that's £4m per year). So by signing the players onto a longer contract length, it helps them keep within financial fair play and spend more over the next few years - don't forget, they've spent around £300m on Sterling, Cucurella, Fofana and Koulibaly - as well as now this player and potentially Fernandez.

I guess it also secures the younger players (Koulibaly's contract wasn't that long) for the long term future.
Risk - the player turns out shite and you're stuck with a player on big money for x years
Reward - player turns out great and you've got him tied down for a long term and could always offer a new reward contract on higher salary but with less years the older he gets

Pretty sure I also read it's something they do quite a lot in the NFL and Boehly's trying this out at Chelsea (eg. Mahomes' 10 year $500m contract)

Probably there are clauses in the contract for salary increase or release for a certain fee, Can't see why Badiashile would sign it unless something like that is in it. Obviously the 7 years is for spreading out for FFP. All the money spent and we're worse than last year. Injuries also play a big part in that and Lukaku not working out after being ok initially.

It might seem alien to a lot of fans across football but I suspect it will become a common practice in the future. Especially with clubs like Newcastle who presumably don’t generate anywhere near as much income as Europes elite clubs.

Saw this on Reddit. Chelsea's home results against the top 6 since 2021:

Mental. It's not the first time they've been floundering for an extended period of time, either. Seems to happen to them every few years. It's particularly odd since there have been seasons in-between where they were doing just fine, not a decade of straight decline like us. What's going on at that club?

It's a strange thing to say about us but we are really lacking cnuts. We're so soft and the only one we have (Reece James) is always injured. Its obviously not going to sort out our finishing but it'll help us in tough moments to ride it out or drag us back into the game.

It’s insane how reliant you are on James.

Zakaria was very good. Chuku was fantastic. Hall also very good.

If todays is the day Potter realised Auba shouldn’t play a single minute more then today is a great day.

We miss both first choice full backs massively. Cucu was poor again today, Hall looked an upgrade and Azpi doesn't have the legs anymore.

I thought Chelsea did well first half but weren’t up to much in the second. It felt like City were there for the taking.

I think Potter should get time but it will be interesting to see what Boehly will put up with.

The signings this summer have been awful if everyone is honest and despite continuing to spend massively the team lined up with Ziyech and Pulisic, neither of which actually want to be at the club anymore. I appreciate there’s big injuries but from the outside it just looks so bizarre. And that’s not even mentioning Aubamayang.

Chilwell
James
Kante

3 very crucial starters missing pretty much the entire season. Now also missing Mendy, Mount, Broja and lost Pulisic and Sterling today. That’s an insane injury list.

Aubamayang not even in the matchday squad? Cucerella at £62m sat on the bench?

What’s going on with them. They’ve made a right mess in the summer and now Potter is picking up the pieces.

Lewis Hall looks a good prospect but then begs the question why they’ve spent £100m+ on left backs. Simply no joined up thinking. That’s more worrying than the results.

Their transfer business in the last few years is probably even worse than ours which is incredible really.

They'd be better if they have James, Fofana and Chilwell in their backline.

No clue what their middle and front three is going to look like in 12 months time though with all these signings so next season will remain very up and down for them.

It’s ok we just signed Kalou mk 2.

Mason Mount must be one of the most overrated players ever he’s been bang average for about 2 years now.

Sterling, Cucurella, Koulibaly and Aubameyang for 200m: is this the worst transfer market in the history of football?
Boehly wasted 200m and the team is worst than last year. This is the problem: a disastrous transfer window. Not Tuchel or Potter.

One of the few defenders in the top half I wouldn't swap Maguire for.

Savage

Seriously though so hyped from his time with Napoli and yet so shit now he's finally left

What length of contract did Boehly give to Koulibaly? They could be lumped with him for a while.

Chelsea haven’t signed a central midfielder on a permanent transfer since 2018, let that sink in for a moment. Kovacic’s transfer was converted from a loan to permanent during the transfer ban.
Their first choice back line is either too old or utterly shit. The rotting of their squad has been criminal.

Where does this development leave Potter in the English coaching hierarchy? People were quite hopeful about him, weren't they?

They’d be foolish to sack him, he needs to have his own players and time to implement his ideas. Not many managers could get a tune out of that squad of players.
I’m sure many can, not to the point they’re 10th.
There’s worse teams ahead of them that’s actually playing a style while Potter
has got absolutely nothing out of this squad. If anyone can even point out what they’re trying out there I’d be grateful. The problem is he isn’t earning any more time.

Has to be said you guys look really fecked

Much less stressful watching it happen to someone else’s team. Like light entertainment. How much did you get koulibaly for? Any chance you can get money back as looks like he got broken in transit?

I really did not want us signing Koulibaly. Always felt he was overrated and at his age, he was ridiculously overpriced.

I did not want us signing Cucurella either.

Sterling was one I was pleased with but he needs better around him and unfortunately that hasn’t happened.

Chilwell, Thiago Silva, CB, James is a good enough back 4 and we need a new right back as cover for James when he is out half the season.

I like Zakaria but we badly need a creative midfielder who can score goals.

We are about 5/6 first team players short of competing which is absolutely horrific considering the money spent.

I said we need a massive transition and this is why I’m happy to give Potter a free pass this season as long as he gets rid of the players who have been stinking out the club or just not good enough.

Azpi is past it. What a servant though.
Jorginho isn’t what we need.
Koulibaly is not good enough.
Loftus-Cheek is not good enough.
Pulisic is not good enough and always injured.
Ziyech can go.
Havertz needs a system around him. He can go.
Lukaku can get launched into the Thames
Aubameyang can join Lukaku
Kante (sad) is finished. His high energy caught up on him. Love the guy. I’d love him for again but very doubtful.

We need to keep an homegrown quota so Chalobah, Mount, Gallagher, Chilwell, Sterling and Hall will stay but only Chilwell would really be a starter for me unless Hall continues to progress or Sterling regains form.

We are in a mess right now but we have a lot of sellable assets which don’t fit Potter’s style which would give him scope to invest.

This season looks like it could be just as much of a write off for them as last season was for us. Nothing is clicking and you just can't see where the goals come from when Reece James doesn't play.

That's generous of you

Don’t need xg to see have impotent we are. 5 goals in 8 games since November. 2 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses. Our form took a hit when we lost 4-1 to brighton at the end of October but we weren’t really playing well before that.
