Yeah, had we scored one of the 3 chances that we created in the first 8-9 mins, that game could've been really different, we could even have beaten them by more than 2 goals considering how good that lineup was at defending and counter attacking, that Barca back line had no pace and Ronaldo Rooney Park would've opened them on the counter.
2011 we were outplayed in the first half itself and we were lucky to go to HT at 1-1. Valencia Carrick Giggs Park midfield was getting absolutely destroyed by Barca, Rooney and Chicha had no service. We could've subbed Anderson/Scholes on and moved Park centrally to and looked to play out a draw or maybe nick a goal from a set piece. All that is hindsight though, we were 2nd best that day by a distance.
As good as Park was in big games for us, I think it was a mistake to start him in both CL finals. He was terrible in both of them.
I don't think we had the personnel in 2011 to trouble them. Our midfield had deteriorated too much. Fergie should have packed the midfield and gone with Rooney up top. We were outnumbered in midfield too easily. It's all moot anyways. They were beating any team that day with how they played.
It's funny though, but SAF says the preparation for the 2011 match was the best he'd ever seen at the club. You would never guess it with how the game went.
The difference between City and Liverpool this year is A) City are superior in the buildup whereas Liverpool are better in attack (previously for both you'd say City) and B) not just Pep vs Klopp, but Liverpool as a football club are historically excellent in Europe whereas City are infants on this stage.
I'd say the two advantages Madrid have over City this year (killer instinct in attack and mentality) aren't there vs Liverpool whereas the gap between the teams remains.
Real Madrid getting to the final has a big chunk of luck attached to it. They've played well for bout 15 minutes across the last three rounds.

Talking about minutes. Madrid were eliminated for 179 minutes out of the first 180 minutes in semifinals.
De Bruyne scored in 2' of the first leg.
Rodrygo scored his second goal in 90+1' of the second leg.
That means that just in the first minute of the first game and for 4 minutes of added time they were not eliminated.
If a Hollywood scriptwriter had sent this material to a studio for an action film with the likes of Nicolas Cage or Sylvester Stallone, it would have not been accepted for not being realistic enough.
Wrong again about the pulse of Liverpool fans. Last time we played Madrid I thought we had a chance. Madrid were clearly favorites. Roles are reversed this time. Our CBs win this one along with Allison. VVD won’t let Benzema breathe. Score a few early and shut it down. Unlike City we know how to win these things.

Fergie's revisionism about marking Messi with Park in 2011 is insane. Messi in 2011 wasn't Pirlo in 2010 he wasn't going to stand still and let Park stand in front of him the whole time. In fact, I'm pretty sure on Messi’s goal in 2011, Park is playing CM and Giggs is on the left, Park is actually the closes player to Messi.

I can see why old heads and being more compact is better, but I'm not sure if they'll have enough time over 90 minutes to change things around if things don't go well. Van Djik, Konate, Fabinho and Alisson is a whole other level to City's defence.

Yeah, as good as Barca were it was a little overrated because of how shite we were by then. We played Shalke in the semi finals ffs.. versus todays teams both of those teams wouldve struggled to get past the QF.
2008 we had a chance as we still had a lot of our 07/08 team that beat them. But we replaced Tevez, Hargreaves, Scholes and Brown with Park, Anderson, Giggs and O'Shea.. half of our team was significantly downgraded. It'd be like if Liverpool played the final without Mane, Fabinho, Thiago and Trent.
Vinicius Jr v Trent will be where the final will be decided. Trent will no doubt need to get forward often as he is essentially Liverpool's play maker. Vinicius could have a field day. Especially with Liverpool's high line. Will be fascinating to watch. Madrid's tactics should be to remain very compact in midfield and just look for Vinicius on the counter.

Well the Best side is undoubtedly Liverpool but the best side doesn’t always win. Hopefully RM can get lucky like they did over the two legs against City.

When you put it this way, it puts the match in a whole different perspective. Everyone who thinks Liverpool will just walk over Real Madrid are insane.

If Villarreal are such a piece of cake, pray tell, why couldn’t we put them to bed in an easier European competition? I’ve said this before but it is absolutely okay to give Liverpool credit where it’s due. I promise you it does not make you less of a united fan.
City beat Madrid in 2020 in back to back games while Liverpool has lost 2 of their last 3 games against them (2018 final, 2021 QFs)
Also deservingly knocked out Bayern and Juve in this campaign. They're just a great cup team.
As bad as he was, he was still the closest thing we had to a player who could cover ground anywhere, playing him as a 3rd midfielder with Carrick and Anderson could've made sense, but he was asked to man mark Messi. Add to that Giggs was playing who was also on his last legs and wasn't any good when we didn't have the ball, same with Chicha who started as a #9, he is not a player who can hold the ball and wait for others to join the attack.
Think SAF did get a few things wrong that day, which is rare for him, maybe he underestimated how good that team was or how brutal the system they played could be.
