Cheers. Tier 2 still pretty damn good. Hopefully it gets backed up. Thankful our game is on Monday, we' need him knowing the plans before Real's game. It sounds like this could happen quickly once the fee is agreed.Tier 2
So not there yet but still they are decent
Yeah, I'm trying to find the bit where De Jong led us on![]()
RelevotivlyRelevo any good?
Thats a big IF. Whats the point in mugging him off if you're resting on such a huge assumption, considering the narrative since May in Barcelona was that he outright does not want to join us? We were mugs for pursuing in spite of this. He did nothing wrong. If there's any truth that he assured us he was interested all that time, then he's partly to blame. Would you not agree?
We never answered the question - who the hell did we plan on partnering De Jong with? Fred or Mctominay?Think people are focusing on the wrong problem when they talk about his age.
The bigger problem is that we know what qualities ETH was looking for in that deepest midfield position this summer. He's been after FDJ all summer because his priority has been to improve what we do in possession and how we build play from the back.
Instead, we're now trying to get him an entirely different type of player, who has never been known for his strengths in possession or in building play from the back. Rather, he was the member of the Madrid midfield least capable on the ball. So he wouldn't solve the actual possession struggles ETH has been trying to fix, at all.
If ETH isn't working out in a few months this is the sort of signing people would point to and say "but the board backed him, look at the money they spent on the best DM in the world!", even though ETH spent all summer trying to get an entirely different profile of midfielder.
I keep arguing we need two midfielders: we need a playmaker, but we also need a defensive-minded midfielder too. Ideally both need to be comfortable playing as single or double pivots to give us some flexibility in shaping the team.Think people are focusing on the wrong problem when they talk about his age.

Yep. I struggle to understand buying him only to play him alongside one of Fred or McTominay, or even putting Eriksen in there. What's more likely to happen is that he'd rock up as a big signing and suddenly feel he had to be something different; that the fee demanded more of him.Think people are focusing on the wrong problem when they talk about his age.

Excellent point, but I don't think Casemiro is going to be our only CM signing, and I don't think Ten Hag is going to be looking at him to be a FdJ player.Think people are focusing on the wrong problem when they talk about his age.

What should we do? Continue with our current midfield options? We are fecking idiots for panicking just because of losing the first 2 games. The last 1-2 weeks have been pathetic, throwing money at everyone on our shortlist I guess. Madrid should bite our hands off for 60m GBP...they would still have Kroos, Modric, Valverde, Camavinga and Tchouaméni for 3 positions.

Signing Casemiro would certainly be the nail in the coffin for any of FDJ. They both play in the same position.
Mm, why? Genuine question.Quoting that figure for De Jong is disingenous, considering why it's that high. More realistic would be to go with the total amount ~100M euros over 6 years, or an annual average of ~£270k a week. We're currently paying Casemiro ~£160k a week
But i don't think he'd move to you now for less than £400k a week honestly...sign De Jong first and that would change, but as it stands, i don't think less than that is enough money
Yeah I wish we were signing a defensive midfielder who wasn't world classNothing more than a band aid fix and just another expensive addition with his best years behind him.
All of this is a real turn off at the moment so I think I will check out of the rumour mill and see what we end up with next month.
He’ll play deep and what’s damning is he’s probably our best dictator of play as well compared to McFred.Yeah, great signing, even if he is not going to be the one dictating play from deep, he can be partnered with midfielders who are. Having him next to someone who lacks in the mobility / defensive aspects would ensure these deficiencies aren't exposed., someone like Neves for example.
Stating the obvious. We aren’t going to buy them both and play one out of position even though they are different types of players. We ain’t buying FDJ to play him ahead of Casemiro. So yeah point still stands.Same position different role. Its like saying Milan didnt need Pirlo because they had Gattuso...
Not exactly when Casemiro can work along with Kroos who less mobile than FdJ, but prefers stationing in area just in front of the backline. Modric drops back a lot too.Signing Casemiro would certainly be the nail in the coffin for any of FDJ. They both play in the same position.
