Carlos Queiroz tells Manchester United to plunder Portugal for Sporting Lisbon's Rui

I always think rating the backroom staff and deciding one is better than the other is the ultimate form of muppetry. We have no clue what kind of work each of them does and what each contributes in terms of preparation for a match. SAF seems happy with Phelan for the last few years, I have no clue how we can decide if he is upto the job or not.

"Carlos is one of the best coaches in world football," Ferguson told United's official website.

"His attention to detail, ability to innovate and will to win have been a key factor to the team's recent successes.

"He has played an important role in building and blending the exceptional squad of players at the club."

Sir Alex Ferguson on CQ's role and impact at utd.

Perhaps this doesn't apply to you but some on this forum have strongly implied that it's a possibility Queiroz was just a passenger and rode Fergie's coat tails when comments from former players and the manager himself totally contradict that point of view. It's impossible to make a convincing argument against Queiroz being instrumental to our tactics, training and the acquisition of players during his tenure.

SAF has talked openly about how he has delegated to a large degree over the last ten/fifteen years, Queiroz was heavily involved in training and according to Keano's rant he had far too great an influence on tactics. We can be sure that he played a big part in bringing Nani/Anderson to the club. Plus we can look at the quality of football pre and post Queiroz, there has been a noticeable change (I would say a drop in quality and effectiveness).

While we are on the subject read some of these quotes from CQ on his friendship with Ferguson.

But the Portuguese coach had tears in his eyes as he said: "This is the
proudest, happiest day of my life and it's thanks to Alex Ferguson that I'm
able to accept this great honour.

"You can tell him that I love him. I went to speak to Alex personally about
this opportunity and it was not a surprise to me that he told me to grab it.

"Alex Ferguson is football itself. No, that's wrong, he is more than
football, he has a great sensitivity and humanity that people don't know
about.

"He is a gentleman and a fantastic person. I'm proud to call him my friend."

I don't downplay his role at all. No doubt he was outstanding for us. SAF has said this many times and highlighted his achievements. However it does bug me when people say that Phelan is not good enough (I'm not saying its you but there are posters on here) when he could be similarly instrumental. There is a reason why SAF is happy to promote him and keep him.

No way this guy can get near a top European club. Queiroz is insane.

Let's see how he looks like in 5 years or so. But for the time being I don't even regard him as a "talent".

He was pretty good against Porto, watched the highlights and he was saving ball after ball, especially that clean strike by Hulk.

Not that I've seen much more of him or followed Sporting much, but I'd still prefer that Neuer/De Gea stuff in which we've seen much more about.

Buffon though at 33 and if he was available, I would take him without even thinking...

If VDS could play on to his 40s, then we can easily get 5+ years from Buffon. Would be a dream signing that

Just because one keeper managed that, doesn't mean another would play at his best level at such age. Schmeichel couldn't. And Buffon has already missed tons of matches due to back problems. Big question mark over him.

I confess I haven't seen that much of Sporting this season as they've been tremendously shit and boring to watch. I know he has been rather noticed, but I think a lot of that may be due to Sporting being so shit and him ending up with a lot of work almost every game, even against shit sides.

To me, the most important attribute in a top club keeper is consistency and mental aptitude to be a mere spectator for long periods and yet be sharp and reliable the few times he's called to act. I'm not sure Patrício is that kind of keeper already, albeit his marked improvement this season and the general happiness of Sporting fans with him, unlike a few months ago, when he wasn't unanimously considered good enough for Sporting, let alone for United.

Question is whether Patrício did improve that markedly on the past few months or just became the least awful of lousy team. I honestly can't answer this as I haven't seen enough recently, but until this season anyone would laugh of him being linked with United.

After his recent record I don't want Queiroz suggesting any more players.

We had someone watching him at Sporting - Porto last week. In which he was pretty good apparently. From the little I've watched of him he's always looked good - but I can't imagine he could be our 1st choice keeper. That would be a bit scary, tbh. Stekelenberg and Lloris are the next targets if De Gea doesn't want to come some say.

The problem is not about skills/talents, we've had those in the past, but mental strength and some aura of "feck YOU" in them.

Lesser character will be shred to pieces after making an error, and SAF won't be here forever to shield them, not many dares questions SAF's decision, imagine if we have a new manager and the GK's making a blunder, the media will be more than happy to get back to us after years of being told to STFU by SAF.

Which is why i'd rather we opted for the big name, at least they're ready on the mental part

I don't get it. Why would Queiroz - who never used him for Portugal recommend him? Why would we want him? As a "big game" player, on the face of it, he's got less experience than De Gea and hasn't shown anything like the same potential. Or has he really come on a lot in the last year and I just haven't seen him play enough?

At the moment I'm just hoping this is just a thinly veiled attempt to make De Gea or Reina or someone to jump now before the chance goes.

Injury prone? "Old"? Hasn't been back to his best in years? I'll pass.

Give me someone young, but experienced who we can keep for 10 years. Keep VDS on as keeper coach.

I hope it does not happen. I d rather we go for De Gea even if it cost us £10m more.

Too short.

After Bebe I'm not sure we should trust Carlos on any more Portguese players.

feck that. Buffon has been an injury problem for years now and quite frankly he's not as good as he used to be. If we're looking to the future we need to look at De Gea and Man Utd Nauer.

Agreed, Buffon was once one of the best but not any more, bad backs don't just go away, they get progressively worse and especially for goalkeepers!

I would be very surprised if he is still playing at any level within 2/3 years.
Let's go for someone younger and on the way up.

Man Utd close in on keeper Rui | The Sun |Sport|Football

MANCHESTER UNITED chiefs will fly to Lisbon today to negotiate a deal for Sporting keeper Rui Patricio.

But the Portuguese club believe they are being used as a tool by United in their bid to land main target David de Gea from Atletico Madrid.

The Old Trafford giants are adamant that is not the case and have so far knocked down stories of an £18million offer for De Gea being accepted by Atletico.

They have already bid £7m for Patricio, which has been rejected by Sporting, who want £12m.

Now they will meet Sporting officials face to face in the Portuguese capital and try to reach a compromise.

Patricio, 23, is more experienced than De Gea, 20, as a Portuguese international who has made 167 first-team appearances for his club.

That is more than twice as many as De Gea.

But 6ft 3in Spanish giant De Gea is considered one of the world's best.

United are searching for a new keeper with Edwin van der Sar, 40, retiring from the game.

Tomasz Kuszczak, 29, has also made it clear he wants out due to a lack of first-team chances and no guarantees he will succeed Van der Sar as a regular.

United have Danish international Anders Lindergaard, 27, who they signed from Norwegian club Aalesund in January. But he is mainly regarded as back-up.
