Carlos Queiroz tells Manchester United to plunder Portugal for Sporting Lisbon's Rui Patricio | Mail Online

Manchester United have added Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Rui Patricio to their list of potential targets to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar.

United have been closely watching the 22-year-old Portuguese international in recent weeks after recommendations from Carlos Queiroz.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also been following him, but United would be favourites should they opt to sign him as they have a co-operation agreement with Sporting which has seen them sign Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.

Patricio made his one and only appearance so far for Portugal in last November’s 4-0 friendly win over Spain.

Hate to say it, but... he was good in FM, when I was at Sporting.

Well considering how successful Queiroz' last suggestion (Manucho) was, this kid need needs to be bought ASAP.

The last goalkeeper Queiroz recommended (Ricardo) was awful.

Unless we get De Gea, id rather we just sign a top notch proven keeper. Will be hard but I id love to see us get Julio.

That Journo should probably do his research abit better.

United no longer have a partnership with Sporting. It's City's gig now and has been for around a year.

It's possible we could make a bid from a Queiroz tip off but we are not likely to sign any future players from Sporting with City under an agreement with them.

I'd say this story is complete bollocks.

BTW - this article mentions we fell out with Sporting over Miquel Veloso. Can anyone recall how this happened? Veloso was touted as a United transfer but never really looked the business whenever we played them in 07/08 or whenever I have seen him in Europe.

Quieroz should rather continue to tell us which attacking players we should buy, susch as Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson :)

As an Arsenal fan, I would pay his plane ticket if you bought Patrício to be your number one keeper.

Veloso looked like a real talent but his development seems to have stalled. The falling out happened when Queroz started talking up Veloso as a player we were interested in while he was still under contract at Sporting (aka "doing a Redknapp"). Their president went off on one in the press about how disprespectful this was (he had a point, to be fair)

Didnt look a good keeper to me when I saw him in a few matches in 07 and 08. Having said that he's still young and was younger still when I saw him, he could conceivably have become a much more able keeper. But I wont hold my breath

Some of the Portuguese players we're told to sign... I really think sometimes its more about what we did for Ronaldo's development, rather than how good the player is. When CQ and other Portuguese people, including Nani when he's mentioned a few players he'd like to see at United, I think its because they appreciate that we're able to get the best out of these Portuguese players and raise them to a higher level than most. And this of course benefits the Portuguese national team and Portuguese football. From what I did see of Patricio this may be another of those cases where the player has a little bit of talent, but he's not that good. But CQ feels that if he went to United and had a couple of seasons here he'd become a far better player

his recommendations are like his managerial skills -shit

No way this guy can get near a top European club. Queiroz is insane.

Let's see how he looks like in 5 years or so. But for the time being I don't even regard him as a "talent".

He's one year younger than van der Sar was in 2005.

Buffon is 33. Today.

The difference is:

Buffon will cost £20m? £30m? only God can tell, but when fit he is considered the best goalkeeper in the world. Pay so much for a man with a back problem? He is not likeley to play until he is 40 like van der Sar... That is the biggest concern, the price is ok, but the fact that he is so much injured worries me.

van der Sar was £2m. He probably was one of the worlds best, Holland never lost faith in him. But he was not considered as such after Juve let him go after only 2 years in favour of Fulham.

Van der Sar was a bargain, Buffon wont be. The context is very different even though the age is about the same?

As much as I agree that spending £20m on a 33 year old Buffon would be insane....you have to feel that even if VDS cost us £20m instead of £2m, it still would have been value for money in the end.

Yeah, just noticed this in another article on the subject. They called Queiroz "Persona non grata" on their website so it was mainly directed at him. He could have mended any rifts with being Portugal manager I suppose.

It's abit ironic he still giving us tips offs if that is the case but there you go. Probably media bollocks because we don't have this agreement with Sporting now.

BTW - If we could get Buffon in as VDS's replacement it would be a risk worth taking and he would not be a 20m or 30m player now surely. Only thing that concerns me is his injury record but I hope he is someone we have had a look at.

On a related point, Eric Steele's being doing a fair bit of media work since Edwin's retirement has become public and he says we have a good 1,2,3 lined up for replacing Edwin which I took as a statement they had identified three keepers who they think could do the job, not that we would have three good keepers at United next season as when Amos was discussed they had him down as very much one for the very future.

Latin Keeper, feck that

Why so serious? x

Yeah Rafael, Anderson and Nani have been real let downs. He is the best assistant manager we have ever had, show some respect (SAF clearly does).

To be fair, you didn't need Queiroz to know that any of those were huge talents. Anyone would recommend them to any top club.

Exactly. Plus the twins were discovered by our scouts in a youth tournament. Not by Queiroz. I'm also sure we have scouts in Portugal and aren't relying 100% on Queiroz for targets from there although obviously knowing him helps because he was such an influential figure in youth football there.

I always think rating the backroom staff and deciding one is better than the other is the ultimate form of muppetry. We have no clue what kind of work each of them does and what each contributes in terms of preparation for a match. SAF seems happy with Phelan for the last few years, I have no clue how we can decide if he is upto the job or not.

Yeah I don't about this guy. I have heard of this guy before though. We were linked with him in the past. I hope we just don't go out and buy him just because Carlos Q. told us to do so. I know he was the one who suggested Nani and Ronaldo but I hope we think long and hard and actually SEE what this guy can do before we make a bid for him.

So CQ is advising us to buy a player that he himself never chose for the Portuguese NT? Talk about not putting your money (or caps) where your mouth is.

I guess he may turn out good - after all, Scolari did put him in the Euros squad when he was a real new kid (not in CQ's WC squad though - was he injured? - though of course some might say that's a recommendation in itself), but I'm very sceptical about the idea that he's ready to be a first choice for us or even on a shortlist.
