Cantona at Selhurst 30 years on

Think it was a Tuesday night. We had just beaten Blackburn at OT with a goal Cantona scored from a Giggs cross, and had just signed Cole. Things were looking very promising. It’s very likely that if Cantona hadn’t flipped that night, we’d have ended up with five titles in a row, and he’d have six out of six in total.

Nah it was definitely a wednesday. We'd have won the league no doubt.

Aye, can still see Giggsy sliding to win the ball then in near enough a single movement he stands and crosses and Eric nods in at the far post, everything was on a knife-edge, amazing times...
Pretty sure it was a Wednesday the Blackburn game being the previous Sunday winning one nil with a Cantona header, could be wrong though, I was 12

It was brilliant from Giggs.Even so Eric had just one square foot of goal to aim at but he hit the target. He usually did.
Blackburn had a goal disallowed just afterwards which only made it sweeter.

Remember it like yesterday. A midweek game and my dad and I were listening to the commentary on the radio, while playing cards, as we would.

When the commentary said that Cantona had gone into the crowd and had an alitication with a fan, it was hard to imagine what had happened.

It was only when seeing it later on the news that we realized how crazy this was.

Caused a massive row the following day at work between myself and several Cantona haters.

Loved it when he returned from his ban to remind everyone who was King.

Time flies..I was a teenager at the time.

Eric fly kicking a BNP thug :+1:

Fergie berating everybody in the dressing room after the for the result with only Eric except from criticism is ace!

Can't remember by who but isn't Ferguson quoted as finishing just by saying "...and Eric, you can't be doing that son"?

Celebrating a goal by kicking the corner flag in front of the Palace fans tomorrow would be a fun way to pay homage to it.

Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember seeing this happen.

I still recall saying something along the lines of "go on Eric lad" when I saw it. I'm no advocate for violence, but sometimes some people really do need a good slap - or in this case a good Jeet Kune Do kick.

Knowing it was 30 years ago makes me feel ancient. Feels more like 20 really.

What did you think of it ? I had a few mates who went last night but thought it dragged on too long and the MC was a dick.
Not a huge fan of the MC either.

Could have done without the auction at the interim. Getting people to pay thousands for canvas prints when they’ve been drinking and are showing off with their mates doesn’t sit right with me. Nor did the MC saying “you know what date it is today. Let’s have a round of applause. Look we have this beautiful picture here taken by Morgan’s himself..” didn’t sit right with me. it reached €6700. In the end, Cantona was bidding against a lad from the crowd and ended up winning but then giving it to the fan.

Eric himself was good 1st half but 2nd half I think was a bit drunk and rambled off about politics and non football stuff. Banged on about freedom. A lot.

One interesting thing I learnt tonight was that INEOS wanted him to come in to discuss head coach job. He turned them down because they didn’t come to his house to “seduce” him.

He’s as mad as a box of snakes honestly

In my opinion the show would be better with another ex player to bounce off

Yes the auction was mentioned as well as been a bit of a fix which lead to a bit of booing . They reckon there was noone actually bidding. My mate was looking forward to it all week but said it wasn’t as good as he thought it would be.

A drunk guy near me won a pricey canvas. Looked like they had trouble with the debit card machine after. The price of these things are out of range of ordinary fans. Could have done without it

On a serious note, if that is true, I'm concerned about INEOS if they're wanting to hire a guy as head coach who has never coached a team in his life, simply because he's a club legend.

It wouldn’t have lasted long. He made it quite clear that he hates them, and thinks that they haven’t a clue. Kept referencing the “economy” and said you get your team winning and the finances grow

He also hates modern football, players jump like penguins with their arms down

Other Cantona bits that come to mind;

- very pissed off with the number of sackings. Especially some lady who had worked for the club for over 20 years and who he knew
“When I was there, it was family. Everybody, it didn’t matter who you were, was part of the family. Today, it’s not a family”

- REALLY doesn’t like INEOS

“With all their stupid economics degrees and their little statistics”

“You don’t make money by firing people. You make money by winning trophies and your stock goes up. When I came to Utd, we won trophies and we started to make money. But these people with their economic degrees think they know how to run a football club”.

- his biggest regret?
“I wanted to kill the hooligan. Unfortunately he is still alive”

- on freedom
“When I feel like my freedom has gone then I will kill myself”

Never change, Eric!

To be fair to Fergie, he mentioned later that he really didn't notice what exactly happened as he was focused on reorganizing the team following the sending off. It only dawned on him when he got home that night and saw the tape.

Often lost within the stories of the kick is the plight of a Palace fan Paul Nixon who was killed by United fans at the FA cup game we played in April 95 some say in retaliation by United fans over the Cantona incident.

I am unable to link The Athletic story here for some reason

I went on Wednesday and enjoyed it. He’s my favourite player ever though so I think I would regardless. The auction was a bit of a farce. Annoying thing was they waited about 45 mins of the interval before they even kicked it off (presumably so more people were back from the bar) so it dragged on massively.

He told the INEOS story on Wednesday too, that they asked to speak to him but they wanted him to travel to them and he wasn’t having it. I thought he said though it wouldn't have been as a coach/manager but he did say he would have been prepared to give up what he does now, which he enjoys, for 3 or 4 years to try and help the club out.

As others said he really isn’t a fan of what INEOS have done so far though so I reckon he’d have lasted about 3 minutes before he told them where to go.

Was he rambling and going off on tangents about politics etc for your show too?

I've heard a tale whereby someone who regularly worked in close proximity to the home dressing room at OT once overheard an altercation taking place at half-time in a Champions League game, and the noise was so much worse than usual that he burst in because he guessed that someone had got in without permission and was causing trouble, turned out it was Keano beating seven bells out of Berg for a mistake in the first half that led to a goal!

Little did he know what he had coming for him when Giggsy pulled off that tackle!

What on earth? Never heard of this, how shocking. Can you give some details?

Remember this like it was yesterday, including the sob story from the guy in the papers looking to cash in. Was amazing.
