Calzaghe - Hopkins

Here's my two peneth. Right man won by pretty much the right decision.

But, what a classless man Hopkins is. I love boxing and appreciate the art of the counter punch and know how good a technical defensive fighter can be; but that guy was awful tonight. You watch a class defensive fighter like Mayweather or Roy Jones and you can't do anything but admire the style and the skill. But that joker, taking the minutes for a low blow that never was AND trying to do it again! In with the heads, holding at every opportunity, not good at all.

He just wanted to sit on the two points from the knock down. It was the boxing equivalent of a Rafa Benitez team that scores in the 5th minute.

He should have known what would happen with Vega judges, they are always more sympathetic to the aggressor.

Definitely. He took such a negative approach to the fight and seemed to think the knock-down would carry him to the end. That's what surprised me most though, he must have known the judges would side with the aggressor, yet his plan didn't change till the last couple rounds .

Well they're talking about a rematch I believe. Perhaps with a better ref who allows them to fight on level terms, we'll have our proof... on the night as it was, he was outclassed. I reckon fighting at Hattons natural weight, he'd take the contest though. So you can be sure Mayweather won't agree to that!

I have tickets for Hattons fight at CoMs next month, looking forward to my first live taste. I've come close before, was in Vegas the week before the Mayweather fight, and I lived next door to the MEN for a couple of earlier Hatton bouts, always saw everyone pouring out after I'd listened to it on radio!

Mayweather is in another league to Hatton. I give Hatton a lot of credit and I do think of him as an excellent fighter, but he just can't compare to Mayweather's talent.

I dont wanna see no more borin rematches. Cotto seems the real deal, i have a feelin he could push Mayweather close.

Cotto is a beast isn't he! At 27 he certainly has the potential to go far. Facing Mayweather would be the ultimate test for him.

Did you watch the first fight it wasn't good. I do agree with your opinion on the Hatton-Mayweather fight and the ref but I would rather that rematch

I know, but I do like both fighters alot and it has the potential to become the great fight the first one never was.

That would be a huge match as well.

Although Cotto vs Mayweather would be just as good.

Thats true. When I think about it I would rather see De La Hoya V Hatton and Mayweather V Cotto. Something different

That would be a bit fairer I think as well.

I don't think De La Hoya would be able to face either Mayweather or Cotto and come out on top. And I don't think Hatton could either. Whereas Mayweather and Cotto would be very interesting.

A De La Hoya vs Hatton & Mayweather vs Cotto double would be beautiful now that you mention it!

feck me, what a nerve-racking fight

Joe was a bit lucky with that decision... very hard to call some of those rounds, he edged it alright but 16-11? :wenger: I don't know why people always bang on about American judges, these days they're just as fair as, if not slightly fairer than, British ones.

Extremely clever fight from Hopkins, Joe did very, very well to get his head straight and work out a way to win from that start.

Legend

I'd love to see that fight, but I don't think Mayweather wants it at this stage of his career. Cotto's fighting Margarito in the summer which should be awesome. Cotto's a wrecking ball but Margarito is relentless.

Not a great fight.Could have gone either way.Hopkins used all his experience to slow down and frustrate Calzaghe. But never did enough in the second half of the fight.Calzaghe looked like the aggressor which always pleases the Las Vegas judges and crowd.

anyone got a link for the full fight, i watched it last night on some well dodgy stream, would like to see it again? cheers

sign me up for that one!!!!! Id go for De La Hoya and Mayweather double. Although Cotto on his day is also top class.

Roy Jones wants to fight Joe Calzaghe following the Welshman's win over Bernard Hopkins.

The former pound-for-pound king says he is even willing to travel to Cardiff for what would be a stellar showdown later this year.

Calzaghe climbed off the canvas to out-point Hopkins in Las Vegas on Saturday night and become the undisputed champion at light-heavyweight - where Jones ruled the roost for six years before losing to Antonio Tarver (twice) and Glencoffe Johnson.

Jones has won all three of his fights since and believes he is now ready to return to the big time in front of a bumper crowd at the Millennium Stadium.

"I would love to fight Joe in front of all those fans in Wales," he said. "I hope we will have the deal done next week to fight on November 15.

"I would see it as the best moment of my career. I am confident despite all I have achieved that my best moments are ahead of me."

As promoter Frank Warren has pointed out, Calzaghe openly chased a match-up with Jones when he was at the peak of his powers in the late 1990's, but to no avail.

The fighter himself is taking a break following the Hopkins fight, but refused to rule out another big-name fight before calling it quits.

But he says, Jones would go the same way as The Executioner should they finally meet.

"Roy Jones is a tremendous ambassador for the sport and he can still fight," he said.

"He's still got that speed and that bit of magic there. But I've beaten one legend tonight and I'll beat another one."

Jones was the undisputed light-heavyweight champion between 1997 and 2003 and is the only man to have won a world heavyweight title after doing the same at middleweight.

His bubble was burst with those three successive losses in 2004 but he has since launched a comeback, struggling past Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw before showing some flashes of brilliance in out-pointing Felix Trinidad in January.

The BBC's lead boxing correspodnent said that Roy Jones would be mreo for show than the sport.

Apparently there is a rising star on the US scene by the name of Pavlik. If the quality of boxing and the overall fight is what people were lookng for [and not £££], that is the one that should be arranged. And that purists would like to see.

Opinions??

Forgive my ignorance, i have not heard of him.

Pavlik is a decent fighter, did really well to get up from a bad knockdown to beat Jermain Taylor to become Middleweight Champion. He would make it a very exciting fight against Joe; he's powerful and fast, plus he's an attack minded fighter which would bring the best out of Calzaghe.

My worry about that fight though, is the weight division it would be fought at? Calzaghe is up at Light Heavyweight and said that he found some difficulty in getting down to Super-middle for the Kessler fight, so would he ask Pavlik to come up 2 divisions or would he go back down one and Pavlik up one?

Either way I think it would have an adverse effect on at least one of the fighters.

I'm not sure but I think the Pavlik-Taylor rematch was at super-middleweight, which would suggest Pavlik has outgrown the middleweight division. Agree that Pavlik-Calzaghe would be a great fight.
