Gaming Building a gaming PC

Moved up from 44 to 43.

Going to give them two more weeks. If they don’t deliver, I am ordering from somewhere else. Don’t take peoples money, if you don’t have the goods.

Number 3 now and delivery has been updated for tomorrow. I will believe it when I see it.

If anyone sees the 3070/3080 FE come back in stock give me a shout. Don't want to pay over RRP so willing to wait.

Not to break your heart but scan literally had a drop about 20mins ago.
I've been put in a discord group and they give almost instant updates on stock: @Balljy could give you an invite link, and thanks to him, I've managed to get the GPU I really want

That being said. Until it's actually in my hand, I'm hopeful at best that the order goes through

Ah that sucks.

@Balljy hook me up mate.

My wife's little brother is looking to build his first gaming pc, not being experienced on this stuff myself how do these components stack up?

Ryzen 5 3600
RTX 2060 6GB graphics card
Corsair vengeance 16GB DDR4 3600 MHz Ram
ASUS ROG Strix B-450-F gaming motherboard
Silicon power 256GB SSD
Seagate 2TB hard drive 7200 RPM
WiFi and Bluetooth PCIe card
Thermal take V250 Case with 4 fans
Windows 10 home

I don't want him to get taken for a ride by paying over the odds for components that will be outdated and struggle to run games too quickly.

I know it needs the basics like a keyboard and mouse and monitor etc, but as the actual pc how does this stack up for a starter build?

I'll be honest, I don't really keep up to date with these products.
Does all parts need to be new? A quick search shows a 2060 is around £350 on a few sites.
You could get a used 1080ti for that, which is a much better card.
Also, don't pay for windows 10. A free download from the microsoft website and a £5 key from ebay works totally fine.
I'd also try and push for a 500gb SSD

Opened up my entry level gaming PC for the first time today to install an SSD [I neglected at point of purchase due to no0b lvl99] and now I feel like there's an extremely strong impulse to go nuts with upgrading shit of which capacity I will not use in the near future.

Internal voice:

"You only play FM21 or EU4 while browsing the net stfu"

"but look at the pretty colours of the liquid cooling fan"

"*lots of infighting thoughts*"

[resolutely]However I am confident that I will not kick my current account in the balls before black Friday is over.[/]

I know basically nothing about PCs. Pretty shameful given I knew how to build them at about 8/9 years old and now I don't even know what the parts are called. Just trying to help him out as I know he won't have done much research into them as he's still a kid. He's actually saving up to pay for it himself so if there are simple solutions like the 1080 working better than the 2060 cards then I can push him in that direction.

Try scan today round about lunch time, They had a massive drop yesterday I and ended up with a 3070 but I’ll flip it when I get a 3080 to pair with my 5900x.
Failing that trends suggest the next drop would maybe be next Thursday.

@Paxi @Igor Drefljak

I've updated the build based on what I've found during my research after the AMD CPUs and GPUs announcements. Let me know if anything can be upgraded from a cost/performance perspective.

For the compatibility messages, I've looked up and the x570 board has a BIOS flashback option without a CPU installed (so I don't need an old amd cpu to upgrade bios before installing the 5600x).

As for the RAM and Noctua cooler compatibility messages, I need your input there. Ex: Same RAM with CAS16 instead of 14 has no compatibilty issues (and cheaper).
For the cooling, I know you recommended AIO @Paxi but I don't trust myself enough not to feck it up and damage the pc parts.

For the graphics card, I just put the 3080 but I'm leaning more towards the 6800 XT as that looks better performing at 1440p gaming. In reality, I will eventually settle for what I can find in stock and at an acceptable price.

No idea on the case yet. I was thinking a Mid Tower (will the noctua fit in a mid tower?). Could you recommend a case with good airflow, glass screen (i want to see the parts from the outside) that is under like 120 USD?

Thanks for your help and sorry for being a constant pain in the ass.

@Slevs
My first case was an NZXT. They do some really nice ones.
The one I'm going to build in is a Thermaltake P5, but really I think them cases only really suit watercooled builds.

As for the setup.
Between the 5800xt and 3080 you're gonna be fine either way.
The build itself looks solid. I don't really see any flaws.
I checked a bottleneck calc and the GPU is the bottleneck, so the CPU is more than fine. That was the only thing that sprung to mind

Interesting everywhere I'm looking says the RTX 3070 should run fine on a 550w Gold PSU with a Ryzen 3600.

Maybe I should upgrade from my 2060 Super after all..

Where's that bailljy guy?

Good look finding any reasonably priced GPUs right now. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but they're either all out of stock or a massive rip off.

I found a card worse than the one I've got now but about £50.00 more than I paid for it back in 2016!!!

And nope.

Apparently been delayed again, so another few weeks. Also they need to remove Zotac 3090s from the discord. Whenever I turn on alerts, I get 100s of them for Zotacs.

Scan and others have really cocked this up. I'm impressed you're hanging in there, although being number 3 should mean "soon" I guess...

Yeah, they put an announcement out to say they had removed the Zotac card alerts by ignoring any 3090's above a price of 1,800 Euro's. One day later the Zotac's reduced in price and they re-appeared. Worst thing is the people selling it know what they are doing as the constantly delist and relist it

I like a bit of buffer on PSU's as they're inefficient when near their top rating but 550w should handle it. It does depend on the PSU type and age to an extent as they can lose some power delivery over the years but you're on the lower edge of fine with 550w

I don’t even know why Scan told me it will ship on 27th. A few hours later, I went on their daily update page and saw the Asus models were delayed until the 6th December. Just weird how they were expecting it within a day and suddenly it’s delayed two weeks.

Asus are not helping either. They promoting cards you can’t even get on their Twitter.

Not sure the Psu is enough (though I'd guess it should be, does it have 2 of the 8 plug connectors?), but I'm on an i7 from 2014 and I can tell you my 3070 is running brilliant on it. Pushing 90% use and keeping super cool on Control with everything (including full Ray Tracing) maxed. Also even though my monitor is 144hz 1080p, that's supersampling from 1440p. Not bad at all.

The PSU is gold rated modular, only a year old, it's as good a 550w PSU as you can get, and yeah it has the 8 pin connectors. I just stupidly decidedly to save an extra 40 quid and not go higher wattage.

To be fair the 2060 SUPER handles everything I throw at it really well on 1440p but it usually gets 70-100fps on max settings and the child in me wants the full 144!

You'll get that with the 3070, it's beasting everything I throw at it even with a 6 year old cpu and DDR3 memory. And I haven't even bothered looking at the overclock yet

Yeah sadly it'll probably be well into the new year before I can get one at a normal price?

I paid £650 with balljy's discord link, however that's for a decent model with a 3x OC (3 fans and it runs super cool too!) and all the RGB/screen stuff so I don't think I overpaid by much if at all. I also got the link as it came up and the card came the next day.

You can get them quite easily if you have the alerts on and can jump straight on it.

That's a very good build mate. Thought ii get 980 pro its got faster read and write speeds and similar price.

Snagged a 3070FE yesterday, both that & 3080 went pretty quickly.
Got a little lucky too, where I sit while at work, have no signal so keep missing important phone calls  but got the discord notification and ran outside to order.

What one and how much did it set you back? (If you don't mind me asking!)

Founders edition, the one Nvidia makes I think? I'm clueless with the different cards
£469 but also had to pay 11 for postage so £480. I'm sure If I had more than 30 seconds to order I could of got postage free but ohwell.

Your order doesn’t happen to be stuck at picking as-well does it. Desperate to get mine so I can sell the old system but they are so frustratingly slow.

Mines with dpd though it got with them late this afternoon so looks like I won't get it till Monday.
Had it update from picking at 2:57am last night and had the geforce code.

Can only hope they're utterly swamped due to blackfriday and not had time to clear it all.

That’s not so bad I’m starting to worry that they’re understocked and I’ll end up in the next batch if that’s the case I’d rather take my chances of getting a 3080 in the next wave.

How the hell did you get a FE? Didn't think they were even making them anymore!
Aye I did hear that rumour to but there certainly were plenty of them yesterday the 3080s didn’t hang around long but the 70s were up for 5-10 mins
