From the very little I've seen of him, looks like he maybe another Fred
I.e. takes time to settle into the English Premier League, have an underwhelming start and eventually turn into a useful player. Not great but good. For £60M nowadays thats about what we get (with the United tax) unless we search in the lower leagues.

That's a far cry from 'he's said he doesn't want to sign'. The express quoting goal is like me quoting indykalia.
Alright then, his contract is expiring and he's not signing. He will likely be gone in 6 months now.

He also flopped massively at Sampdoria & Udinese and hasn't played anywhere but Portugal, a very weak league. Lets just try and be realistic instead of talking him up so much that he disappoints when he doesn't do those numbers in the PL.

And how old was he when he "flopped massively" in Italy? 21? Your negativity seems very strange to me. If you said I have my reservations about him then fair enough but you obviously don't rate him whatsoever. Just look at his stats. Every year he keeps improving and is now reaching his peak. There's nothing flamboyant about him, he's just a hard working professional who wants to improve and with everything that's happened at Sporting with him he never once threw a wobbler which to me says a lot about his character.

Of course he's not going to have the same numbers here as he has in Portugal but to write him off just because he's coming from the Portuguese league is pretty crazy tbh, especially when he's a standout player. There's nothing about this transfer I see as a negative if it happens and I for one am excited as hell.

I’m not sure you can come to that conclusion having watched him/seeing his contribution to a very poor Sporting side but there we are.

Id love to sign him.

The depressing thing is, i doubt he's as good as herrera. Cant believe we let him go

If there is any truth to baldy's claims that the hold up with the deal is Rojo's reluctance due to wages, it just goes to confirm that for some players the main motivation is finances at the expense of competition integrity. Notwithstanding that he has been earning a vastly exorbitant wage at Utd for last few yrs to compensate for his next move, that is still his motivation is very disappointing but entirely expected with modern footballers.

There’s this new thing, it’s called actually watching football, not just reading stats. I know, crazy!

I don’t know anymore than you about him btw, but to come to this conclusion before he’s kicked a ball for us seems kind of mental imo.

I have heard of it but never watched it. My prediction was purely based on reading stats.
Ironically, some "stats" are what makes him look good. Goals, assist and key passes.

From what I have heard he has received an offer of more than double the sporting offer from Fenerbache. Accepting a job on less than half the money you can get from another company would be idiotic.

Threads like this these need some sort of summary button to cut through the gibberish.

I have read Lingard and Rojo being mention, are they really being offered in exchange deal?

Lingard gets mentioned in every thread. These days on the Caf he's getting blamed for not finding a cure for cancer.

Obviously nobody knows for sure, but Rojo has been mentioned by several sources, some say Gomes.

Never heard the Lingard links yet. Doubt that would happen.

A midfield 3 of Bruno, McTominay, and Pogba is seriously well balanced, talented, and young.

Lingard was mentioned by Baldy that he had been offered around Europe. Not that he would be part of the Bruno deal.

He is Robbo reincarnate or extremely shoddy. I don't know about rest.

114 goal involvements in 2 and a half seasons after moving on from Serie A at club level.

That's pretty ridiculous despite the level of the Portuguese league.

Yet some wouldn’t do it and hold out for Grealish or Maddison. Incredible.

Compared to the paltry return of our midfielders: McT-3
Lingard-0
Pereira-1(?)
Pogba-0
Fred-0

People keep bleating on about the level of the Portuguese Leage. If a player was tearing it up in the Championship, or even League 1, to the level he is tearing up Portugal, would people be saying we shouldn't sign that player?

Has anyone ever torn up the lower English leagues to the extent he is tearing up Portugal?

He is going for 1 year or 6 months. How much diff could it be between our club salary and Sporting's salary? he get 70K pounds/ week at united which is 4m euros per year. If he gets half that in Sporting, why would we stall for only 2m euros to stop an important deal of 70m euros?

I really don’t know how I feel about this if it goes through. He’s obviously a decent player and I really like all the things that have been mentioned and reported about his character and the loyalty and respect he has shown Sporting. Refusing the 5mil bonuses and stuff and trying to bring the team together when all hell was breaking lose and people leaving and all that.

I just can’t help but feel or wonder where is he gonna play as I don’t think he’s good enough in the hole. Are we gonna switch to a 3 and he plays with Pogba and a Dm, and is that DM Fred? I think he’ll be a useful addition to the squad and probably an improvement on Lingard, Mata and the likes but when I’ve seen him play he has all the time in the world to make some of these passes or take these shots and I just don’t see him getting that time or space in the prem.

I’m just not convinced he is the right man for the job but I really hope if it goes through he proves me wrong.

1) Pogba and McTominay will be back in a couple of weeks so the currect situation will resolve itself soon enough.

2) This is what I'm afraid of, signing someone we're not all that keen on because he's available, we can't get our top targets and they're thinking we need to get top 4. Considering the financial implications of missing out on CL football (both TV money and sponsorship penalties that will kick in next season) he will have paid for himself if he helps us get top 4. I just don't see it happening. Like I said in another post he's likely to take time to adjust to the PL and we'll only start to see the best of him next season, by which time most of the people desperate for his signiture in this thread will have written him off as a failure and not good enough.

3) You're right about Maddison and Grealish but my point was that they don't need time to adjust to the PL and so are more likely to help us get into the top 4.

I agree with #1, we've had a pretty shit season in terms of CM injuries. We probably need a #10 more than we need an #8 and I think the thinking is we'd go for a player who can play in both positions instead of buying a specialist #10. This way we'll have Pogba / Fernandes who can play both positions and will be fairly well covered for injuries. I don't really like that line of thinking but we'll see.

Re: 2, The club have been saying repeatedly that they're taking a longer term view for recruitment and won't be forced into a knee-jerk Jan transfers, I'm willing to take their word for it. I get the feeling that Ole is not totally sold on this transfer though, so we'll see.

Yep nothing could possibly go wrong could it
Such a weird, weird way to look at it. He’s a quality player, his numbers and an eye test tell you that. Players take time to adapt sure, but he’ll produce if we have a settled team and a clear way of playing.
