Bruno Fernandes | Signed

This transfer leaves me feeling completely cold. It goes against everything the club has said it wants to do like waiting for it's top targets to become available and not blocking youngster development.

It looks like Ole and Woodward are prioritising short term goals over long term gain and even then it's still unlikely to succeed as he'll probably need at least 6 months to adjust the pace and lack of space in the PL compared to Portugal.

Hope I'm wrong but I think this will be a failure of a signing and it will mean we lose both Gomes and Chong in the summer as they won't get any playing now.

It's the first time I've doubted Ole is the right man for the job.

Weird post.

Why would signing a 10 mean we lose Chong? They don't play in the same position.

This post leaves me feeling confused. Gomes and Chong will not leave the club because they signed a new player. Neither have suggested they are ready to be regular 1st team players at this moment

So did Henry, and both were very slow starters when they moved to the Premier League.

Salah n KDB failed in the PL with Chelsea using some of the logic on here. Two of the best players in the world currently.

I keep hearing this again and again. Tell me how many midfielder in any league out there has scored as much as Bruno does. He has 5 goals in Europa also, same competition which United is playing at the moment. Can you tell me which midfielder has scored as many goals he has in that competition?

He has scored 6 penalties. 2 of those was in Europe. But i'm just playing devils advocate.

I actually think he looks like a great player, and would be a great signing for us.

Slight reality check guys. Bruno Fernandes is a decent player - however he hasn't done enough to merit the sheer overreaction to his ability. He had a shocker in Italy which is why he went back to Portugal.

I have wound Arsenal fans up at work about Pepe for months now, purely because I wanted him at United, not because hes a bad player. Get ready for the backlash when Bruno comes and takes time to settle in.

What a nonsense of post.
Obviously the Portuguese league is on a lower level than the PL, but then again which leagues arent. There are plenty of weaker leagues around but i guess he's the only "decent" player to be able to beat Lampard's goal record.

He did pretty well in Italy, 116 games and 15 goals in Serie A is quite good, specially considering he was in a foreign country and only 21 years old when he left.

Honestly i don't believe he's leaving this winter break, would be foolish to do so, even by Sporting's president standards.

I don’t know much about him but we certainly need a creative outlet in midfield, injuries and our struggles against defensive setups have shown this to be a priority.

He seems to fit that profile, I just hope we’ve done our due diligence on him and this isn’t an all-out panic buy. If it works out, he could be the difference between top 4 and not.

If this is for real we need to get this deal done asap and move onto the next. Because we need more than just Bruno.

And.. if we do sign him, serious questions should be asked of Woodward & judge at the highest level - if we actually had intentions to buy him, why not in the summer past when we knew our MF situation? why wait until after he have signed a new contract and now we have to pay significantly more, why play half a season without a decent CAM (a glaringly obvious hole in the squad) ?:confused:

Putting aside the common sense part that we desperately need a player like him, from a business point of view, and just looking at numbers, the fact they ignored buying him in the summer for alot cheaper when we needed him just as much... that beggars belief and needs answered. Shows the Glazers / woodward are pretty bad at business. No wonder alot of their business ventures are fecked with decisions like that

Signing Fernandes means less opportunities for Mata, Pereira and Lingard to play as a 10, so that means more competition for the wide roles and less playing time (if any) for Chong.

To be fair, watching Lingard and Pereira play No.10 for half a season changes a man. No one could have anticipated how incredibly f-ing awful they've been.

So you're saying Bruno isn't better than Grealish or Maddison just because they play in the Premier League?

I think his point is you won’t know until he plays in the Premier League too. He was directly responding to someone who was saying ‘ he has more assists & goals than Maddison & Grealish combined’ of something. When of course you can’t really compare. He may be great in the Premier, May not. But it’s unfair on Maddison & Grealish to say they aren’t as good as Bruno due to these stats. It’s a lazy comparison

Anyone else think he's got the face of someone that would flop in the premier league??

So you're saying Bruno isn't better than Grealish or Maddison just because they play in the Premier League?

Twistings things a bit there.

It's quite clear from that thread what my point was, given you were critical of a response to a particular post.

I'm saying it doesn't follow that he's the real deal because he's scored more goals in Portugal than Grealish/Maddison have combined in the PL, as the other poster stated.

It's a false equivalence.

Gomes already said he doesn't want to sign so that's OK, no? Chong could not show enough as of now.

Lingard, is that you?

I don't think we would have been in for him if Scott and Paul were both fit and running.

Any chance of this being done and him playing against us on Sunday?

I hope you're right but I just don't see it unfortunately.

Signing Fernandes means less opportunities for Mata, Periera and Lingard to play as a 10, so that means more competition for the wide roles and less playing time (if any) for Chong.
I don't see Lingard playing much at all if Fernandes comes going by the murmurs around the club. Mata hasn't played that much this season and Pereira has had few appearances at #10. Either way, I like Chong but he absolutely has not shown anything for the first team to show he's ready for a place. If he or Gomes is good enough they'll shine through and take those places. Chong has not done that this season and Gomes has been injured a lot.

should we just continue on with the apathetic midfield we currently have and give up on creativity or goals from midfield for the rest of the season in the hopes two young players who have barely played and might want to leave can try to impact the team?

Didn't one of our resident Portuguese caftards already explain his theory on why his spell in Italy was unsuccessful or was it @devilish ?
Apparently, he was made to play deeper as he's got a very good work rate which in turn negated his best qualities.

Chong shouldn't be starting for us anyway. Sadly don't think he's good enough, time will tell.

I'm not saying he won't make in the PL, just the quoted person directly compared his output to Grealish and Maddison, who are playing in a much tougher league. Actually, I do think he will need time to adapt to PL, but that's beside the point. Also, Vardy, Ings and Pukki are strikers.

The expectations of this guy seems sky high around here, I hope he eclipses Ronaldo for all it matters, but there's also plenty of players that did well in other leagues and didn't make it here, especially in recent years. He's not getting coached by prime Fergie here let's be honest.

Which makes his statistics even more impressive and the chances of him not being able to make it in the EPL less menacing. Its easier for a player to find space for himself when he's playing in a deeper role rather then as a lone striker upfront and surrounded by defenders. The guy has United's DNA. He's a leader, he's hardworking and he's technically gifted. In Italy he had to learn to be flexible and versatile as points rather then goals is what matter at struggling sides. There's no point scoring a goal and end up 4-1 down simply because the prima donna in midfield refuses to backtrack.

I don't think he's Ronaldo level, no one is. No English player from Sir Alex era right till now is anywhere near to Cristiano Ronaldo starting from Shearer and Gazza, Rooney and Beckham right to Gerrard, Kane and Rashy. The closest to Ronaldo was Paul Scholes but even the ginger prince pales in comparison to that force of nature. There's a reason why Ronaldo is still a beast playing with Juve while the white Pele is in the championship. However, I can see Bruno succeeding with us. He's got the right skills but on top of that the right attitude. Lets hope he receives the right coaching. Ronaldo wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for Sir Alex who turned this tall and thin winger who would dribble himself to the corner flag into the Ronaldo we all know and love.

We have McTominay having recently come through, Greenwood and Williams coming through right now, plus others on the fringes soon to do the same no doubt. You can't expect an entire team to come through at the same time and be good enough both now and in the future. The club isn't going against what it stands for at all. On top of this we have Rashford due to come in to his prime in the next few years too. I don't see any other big clubs doing this to the same level.

But we need more quality and will have to buy to get that.
I find some people are too obsessed with the future, and while that's very important, I'd rather not wait til I'm nearly 40 til we're playing good football again.

Chong's nowhere near ready. He'd be best off given a loan to see where he is in a few years.

A proper team isn't supposed to be relying on raw kids.

We should also be off-loading/upgrading all of the above mentioned players, which bringing Fernandes is hopefully the start of.

This means no Maddison in summer. Probably fine because of the cost involved in getting him from Leicester.

Fernandes was always on the list of potential transfers. The reason we are going after him now is not because we've lost track of our long term project, but because McTominay and Pogba are long term injured and we're in a extremely crucial period of the season. If we're buying Fernandes it's because the brass believes he will fit the mold of the club, not because he's the only available player we could get.

He's being bought to perform now, not to spend the next 6 months acclimating to the colder English weather so he can play next season. He's match ready today.

But what does that have to do with Chong and Gomes? He's not taking their first team slot away at all now is he? Williams has usurped Shaw as our new LB, Greenwood is being eased into regular match time, Tuanzebe was about to bench Lindelöf before he got injured.

The kids who are ready to play are being awarded gametime. Chong and Gomes have not convinced anyone that they are ready to start.

But why does this mean we lose two players? I don't understand this line of reasoning. By this argument we can't buy new midfielders in the summer either.. soo, uhm?

The dream would be the hype and inflation that comes with it dies down a bit, then we buy him in a couple of years once a few more positions are sorted and have actual good options

Prove it. Just prove it. No one knows what this means for our transfer policy seeing as I don't think anyone saw this move happening this month. But any reason to be negative eh, doesn't take much.

So you're saying Bruno isn't better than Grealish or Maddison just because they play in the Premier League?

Interesting one this. Would you say Fernandes is being bought as a more attacking option at number 8, whereas Pogba would play alongside him when back?

If so could Maddison or Grealish play alongside Fernandes with a more defensive minded midfielder behind them?

Or would Pogba, Fernandes, Grealish and Maddison all by vying for one position in this team , obviously depending on if we decide to sell Pogba and replace with Maddison or Grealish

Sorry I just don’t get this way of thinking! A good side is made up of homegrown and imports. Chong is not good enough, he needs first team football to improve and we’re not going to slide down the table just to give him a try out. I’d like Gomes to stay but we need to remember he is very young, we need to urge patience with him.
We need a few new faces with a bit of quality right now, we’re down to the bare bones in midfield

It's called common sense.nothing to prove there.

True, he is only 22 . So probably in 2-3 years, we can try again.
