Bruno Fernandes | Signed

Assuming one marquee signing around the 100mill plus range, who would people prefer... Maddison or Sancho? I think signing Fernandes possibly negates a Maddison bid.
I like Maddison but I think getting Fernandes in could also be useful because if we sign him for 60m we will have funds left over to sign two other players in the 40m -50m range and as we have seen our depth is appalling and we need 4 - 6 new players just to have enough bodies. I think we probably need 3 first team starters - a DM with good passing ability, a goal scoring AM and a wide forward - I would rather we blow a 100m+ fee on Sancho who will contribute immensely to the team's goal scoring and creativity than spend it on Maddison and possibly not have enough left over to fit in an attacker. If Bruno can come in an provide 20 goals plus assists in addition to his industry of the ball then that would be great.

Honestly even thinking about a Sancho or Maddison at the moment is pure fantasy, but maybe its a coping mechanism to believe in the summer we'll be in a position to go after that type of player? To me its just setting yourself up for even more disappointment.

For once I would agree with Ed that Maddison isn't worth anything close to £100M. Maybe not even 80. But then he should not even be on our radar, if that is what he is priced at.

The more important question is: why the hell do we have any scouts at United, let alone the largest scouting team in PL? We never sign anybody who isn't obvious and already hugely overpriced. The only times, in recent years, that I can even remember us signing somebody relatively unknown was James (personal recommendation from Gigsy so nothing to do with scouts) and Diogo Dalot who is a complete and utter dud. He had only 6 games with Porto's senior team so I have no idea who saw what in him or why they thought he could play senior team at United, even before breaking into Porto's senior team, but clearly none of it worked at all.

Because for everyone of these guys, there are 1000 all the same at about the same level that they get picked up at this lower league clubs.

I'm the same, thought it would be nailed on once the Benfica game was done, but it seems like we've made no progress there since then.

Thr only thing i will say is generally transfers go much quieter over match weekends as journos have actual football to cover. Maybe things will change today.

The Portugese league isn't amazing but if you are the undisputed best player in it you are a decent footballer. Hasn't he been scoring in Europe too?
He's not worth what is quoted. We will end up overpaying quite a bit for a "finished article", instead of improving possibly 2 positions with that money.

Seferovic has been scoring for fun for Benfica last season, even Rafa Silva. Joao Felix who looked like a special talent is having trouble adjusting to La Liga, which is much closer league in terms of style to the Portuguese one.

If we end up paying this for Bruno I can sense in 6 months time many will be saying we wasted our money and got nothing to show for it.

If we don't see some movement on this today/tomorrow then I'm really in doubt if it'll happen.

Knowing Woodward he will probably leave it until the last minute of the window.

Reports today that City are preparing to gazump United and will offer £80M, compared to United's bid of less than Spurs offered in the Summer.....

Think Old Trafford may be burned to the ground if City nick in and steal him without messing around.

That could well be true but the fact is we need a player now to remain competitive in the season and if he isn't the one then the club must have alternatives because how we finish the season will have ramifications on what we can do in the summer and what happens in the summer will affect what we will achieve next season. I don't think anyone expects him to score 20 goals from midfield and create dozens more but surely the Portuguese League isn't so shit that he would fail to achieve 20 gaols and assists over a full season - if he achieves that then he can help us to 5 to ten more points that we would never get with Lingard/Pereira or that extra 20m going towards the Glazers' dividends.

This is exactly what we should do. This one screams panic buy.

Why the feck do we need such an extensive scouting network when the only targets we have are 50m+ ones?

Well you need to get the 50m+ ones right too. Else you get Veron / Sanchez situations. A 50m player for us, is probably what a 35m player is for another club. No player comes with guarantees, so you scout the players ability under pressure, mental attributes, etc, so we dont end up with Depay again.

Id say this is over.
The club wont over pay.

Strategically they are looking at 15 matches until the end of the season. They will be looking at the data and the commercial forecasts on this one.
If it was a guarantee that Champions League qualification was going to be a result of the signing then you would have to say it would be done but the team they way it is - even with the new player may not qualify then they are in trouble financially.

My gut is saying that if the price is within the MU PLC budget then he will be signed. If they hold out for extra its off.

All the glazers care about is being financially competetive - and spending 70 million for no return is not going to happen.

Brandt for example is having trouble adjusting at Dortmund and has been vocal about it. Probably would be worth around 20-30m in the current market. I'd rather take a punt on him for example than Bruno at 70-75m pounds. There are loads of players that can improve us that aren't worth 70m.

Yes, sure you need to get the 50m+ ones right too, but those come at a bigger risk than the 20-30m ones.

I doubt probability of us regretting Bruno is high. We are not looking for next Xavi here, for crying out loud! We need improvement over JLingz and Pereira, because those are who we are stuck with today! The bar here is pretty low.

FFS, Fred is currently our best midfielder, carrying the whole team. Fred! Sure, he has improved, but he is not world class and yet we would be fecked without him. This is our reality!

It is not about aiming low. World class players won't join us right now - we need to get that simple fact. Years of mayhem has caught up with us! We need the likes of Fred and Bruno to get back into top4 and then we can see who comes to us

We paid £50M for Fred. What the hell are we haggling about? Get it sorted and move onto next target if we are genuinely interested in making this squad better. The bigger problem is we are totally unable to get rid of Pereira, Rojo, Jones even on loan because of their ridiculous contracts. Someone needs sacking before Ole.

Probably will happen.

Will be classic Woodward move that seals it. Refuse to pay and then end up paying more than what the selling club originally wanted at the end of the window

That would be hilarious. Regardless of transfers there will hopefully be visible protest against the ownership and Woodward going forward. The are sucking the life out of the club.

You know that Dalot is 20? Born same year as Chong. Think it is a bit early to conclude he is a complete and utter dud.

A 10m player is an upgrade on JLingz and Pereira. Even some of our academy players are upgrade on both.

I wouldn't jump on Fred form yet, can be a purple patch, not a while ago was considered a total flop.

As I said there are load of quality players out there and we seem to be looking at the very popular ones that everyone knows.

And Brandon Williams is 19. Yet you can see Williams is quality even if unfinished. Dalot is not. Besides, he had no business joining senior squad. Should have played in under 23s and gone on loan or something

We have an egoistical Fiorentino Perez wannabe driving our transfer policy, we didn't need to sign Maguire at that outrageous fee for the impact we all knew he was going to have but 'we can do things in the market that other clubs can only dream of'.

Red cafe: We should save our money for sancho who it’s definite we are signing this summer, champions league or not. Why would he go anywhere else?!

He's just had injuries. He played for Porto's first team at 18 and he made 23 appearances for us last year.

You should know our fanbase better by now.

The club seem to have a fascination with young english players, and seem to be messing about something serious with this fernandes deal.

I can see them pissing about with this until the last day then walking away, then saying it was always the plan to wait til summer to sign Grealish/Maddison. But come the summer, i dont expect anything different. Will be stalling & excuses all round, because Ed & Judge will more than likely get their pants pulled down on them deals too. And we will be spoon fed more excuses, 'hard to get deals done in a Euros year" etc

He's worth that much to Leicester. He's their main playmaker that could guarantee them CL. Us bidding 80m is frankly an insult and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Jesus, you just be very sensitive if you think an 80m bid is an insult.

Monday’s edition of Record reports the Lisbon club are firm: They want €60m plus a further €10m in bonuses for their player, ‘otherwise there’s no business’.

O Jogo’s Monday edition agrees that talks are continuing, and, just like Record, they state Sporting want €60m plus a further €10m in bonus payments.

A Bola disagree slightly, and say Sporting want €65m plus €5m in realistic bonuses, but, still, as has been the case since the story started, it’s made clear the Portuguese club want a headline figure of €70m.

Portuguese papers are consistent with numbers.

He was even half decent when he came on yesterday!
hes really promising, but bloody hell hes so injury prone. he and the club must sort that out or else he'll never amount to anything at united.
