There is nothing new about this Saga.
The selling club wants as much as possible
The buying club wants to pay as little as possible
they are starting points in the negotiation
Add to that premiums such as:
January transfer window usually favours the Seller
The Manchester United Tax
Everyone including the seller knows United really need to strengthen that position to increase the chances of a top 4 finish
The difference is the large amount of theories, speculation, and in some cases deliberately misleading information
being peddled by every person wishing to either influence the outcome or sound like they know something others don't.
That's part of Manchester United being a big club, with many fans, some who also have an agenda of some sort.
Papers and other outlets need to sell stories, saying they are working to find a deal that both sides are happy with is boring,
and does not sell as all the exaggerated theories I have read
I don't know the statistics, but I imagine more than 70% find a compromise that both sides are happy with,
and the deal is done,
Anti Ole, Glazer, Ed fans will spin in to suit them
Pro Ole, Glazer, Ed fans will spin it to suit them
Pro Ole, Anti Glazer, anti-Ed fans will spin another way completely.
Same information, different interpretations, thats life!
