Bruno - Capitão

So Portugal's captain is United's benchwarmer while Portugal's benchwarmer is United's captain?

Wonder why Ten Hag didn't let the players decide the captain themselves by voting. Apparently that's how Pep, Klopp and many others do it, and it makes sense since the captain is the players' representative.

Don't really care who the captain is though tbh

I feel like people are placing all this emphasis on club captain just to further fuel their hate-on-Maguire agenda.

We need captains across the pitch, irregardless of who is wearing the armband. I do think we're getting there though, with serial winners sprinkled throughout the team, and younger hungrier players who actually seem like they give a f*ck.

It's never bothered me who's captain tbh. We should have at least half of our XI out on the pitch who you could give the armband to.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? None of those analogies function, the guy was brought on towards the end of the game as a sub. Bruno has been captaining us for four games in a row and has been playing well, Maguire on the other hand has been shite for over a year and his captaincy is being questioned by the fans, pundits and if reports are to be believed - the dressing room.

Not taking the band would have been very easy part way through the game, and would have displayed a bit of respect for Bruno and acknowledged his own struggles and shown a bit of dignity. Instead he's shown an inability to read the room and potentially pissed off some of his own team mates and displayed as I say a complete lack of self-wareness.

Will he accept though, if he took the band off Bruno with only a short amount of game time left?

I'd have liked to have seen the interaction, and as the poster has questioned above - whether Bruno went to Maguire or the other way round. If it's the former, it's less bad.
Come on if the captain comes on he always takes the armband. It's nothing new, just a chance to have a go at Maguire. People need to lighten up

He is true leader this season and must stay captain. Enough with charity shit. Eth must say directly to Harry that Bruno is captain.

Spot on. That was pathetic, how we let it go. Didn't even complain for a legitimate foul.
Don't forget Spurs game when Martial made a penalty. Maguire was the one who pulled our players from the ref by saying; "Ref is right. Move on"

I was surprised to see Maguire take the armband off Bruno when he was brought on.

I'm not obsessed with who is captain like much of our fanbase are, but that action suggests a shocking lack of self awareness. At best, it's misplaced confidence.
Maguire is the club's captain. It would have been shocking if Bruno did not promptly give the armband.

If captain needs to be changed, then that decision has to come from ETH

Nothing to see here.

The deputy captain always hands over the armband when the club captain comes on the field.

The most important part about Bruno having the armband when Maguire doesn’t play is the confidence it has given him, he regressed hugely when Ronaldo arrived….and struggles in the Portugal team….

Bruno was our most influential player over the last two seasons before Ronaldo arrived…giving him the second captaincy was so clever….not just for Bruno but also for his relationship with Ronaldo….

I think it’s important to understand the relationship with playing with your idol….Ronaldo being 10- 15 years older than a lot of the squad would most likely mean these players idolised him in their formative years.

It must be daunting for all of the younger players to play with him especially if he is throwing his arms around and complaining when he doesn’t get his goal….

Yep, seemed weird to me when Harry came on and took the armband off him.
I think the actual armband and who wears it, at the moment, is not relevant. The team know that the actual captain and leaders are Fernandes, Varane, Martinez, Malacia (by example and way he plays) Eriksen, and Ronaldo. There was a tweet where Antony referred to Fernandes as “my captain”

Ten Hag not officially changing the captaincy is just him being clever. He doesn’t want the media/pundits to cause drama about it and for that to be the issue of every press conference.

Maguire has basically been voted out through an unofficial vote of no confidence, no one says it, it’s not official, if asked they’ll say “Maguire is the captain” but it’s clear he is no longer viewed as such.

It's in the Premier League Handbook.

M.11.The captain of each team appearing in a League Match shall wear an armband provided by the League indicating his status as such.

M.12.Any Club acting in breach of any of Rules M.1 to M.11 inclusive will be liable to pay to the League a fixed penalty of £2,500 for a first breach, £5,000 for a second breach during a Season and £10,000 for a third breach during a Season. Any subsequent breach may be dealt under the provisions of Section W of these Rules (Disciplinary).

Has nothing to do with being kind. It's on the rules. A few years ago a player (cant remember the player or game) was subbed on and given the armband as it was his last game. The ref told the club captain that he could not pass on the armband as it contravened the rules.

Almost certain this rule just means someone (out of the 11 players on the pitch) has to be the captain and wear an armband at all times. The last time I heard it come up was when Arsenal got a warning for it the other year when Koscielny went off at half time and no one took the armband for the second half.

There's nothing in here or elsewhere in the handbook saying the "club captain" has to wear an armband whenever he's on the pitch. You can change captains during a match if you want or, name a different captain for every match.

This, and it would've been so much worse if Maguire had declined it as some people are suggesting he should've done. They just did what everyone else in their position have done for I don't know how long and if someone thinks either of them should be blamed for doing something wrong then you're looking for issues that aren't there.

I don't see the need, it would create unnecessary ostracisation. I reckon most of the squad would vote for Bruno, Ronaldo or De Gea, which would just further demoralise Maguire to see the that the majority of the players who has captained the last 3 years don't want him as captain. I think he will keep the armband more for show than anything. Bruno will play most games and be captain in them so most of the squad will regard him as captain anyway.

Yeah he's the number one scapegoat right now. But I have to say, that doesn't mean he wasn't a poor choice of captain. All least season he looked like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, and be buckled. You want the exact opposite of that from your leader.

Even when he came on against Arsenal, he looked nervous and jittery and I was instantly on edge versus when Martinez was on. Not trying to pour more misery on the guy, but he looks done at this club. I think he's a good player, but it was Ole's fault for making him captain and it has clearly taken it's toll.

Fans have false opinion about captain role and underestimate it. Captain is a leader of a team. During a game, during trainings, in changing room, in things not related directly about football etc...
Roy Keane (one of greatest captains ever) and some of his teammates often said about his duties and how good he was in it and how important he was. Maguire doesn't have any of those traits.

1) captain must have respect among players. He doesn't need to be the best player but needs to be someone who players listen. That respect you must earn and that is why captain must be someone who is part of the squad for some time.
Maguire got armband after 3 months and directly from manager. I am 100% sure that players were not happy with that. Someone new comes in changing room and becomes their "leader" because he is a teacher's pet. Only because of that his captaincy role was doomed from the start.
2) sounds harsh but when you are mocked by oppo fans every game, it is hard to be respected by your teammates.
3) like it or not, captain must pressure the ref during the game and stand by his teammates even if ref is right. Maguire does opposite. Couple of times he even was on refs side against his teammates which is a travesty.

Maguire is awful captain material. ETH must change that soon as possible.

This is it, but alot of our fans do not like this from Bruno.

He is there making sure we do not go 1-0 down.
Right. He's relentless in getting his point across to the referee. We have missed this kind of character in the team, someone who would do anything to win. Complaining comes naturally to him.
