Brendan Rodgers Tribute Thread | Have your tissues ready before entering

Never understood this envelope thing, I mean:

"I think there’s three players who will let us down this year — the cause, the fight, everything – and I have written them down already in these three envelopes. Make sure you are not in one of the envelopes."

If he's already written them down in the envelopes, how can they possibly make sure they're not there? If they're there then they're there, if they aren't they aren't.

It was a pathetic gimmick meant to motivate people who are a bit stupid.

It is basically a smartypants way of saying "prove me wrong"

After reading all that, I'm full sure he graduated with honours from night classes at The Derek Zoolander School for Managers Who Can't Talk Good and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too.

In all seriousness I think Rodgers should try his hand in Germany next. The type of Football he tries to get his team to play would fit in the Bundesliga.

Sir Alex did the same thing early on at United.

All right but did he also mention that he had already written them down, but they can prevent themselves from having already been written down somehow?

Anyone mentioned the moneyballesque employee Edwards yet? The Mail reports on this guy as the one who essentially determines who to buy based on stats.

The Fenway Sports Group employee this methodology when acquiring players for the Red Sox after Billy Beane was so successful with it at Oakland. Essentially it dismisses traditional "gut feeling" based scouting in favour of compiling stat after stat on players and using these to decide who to go after.

If true, I can't fathom how naive FSG are in thinking this will work in football. In Baseball, essentially you can look at an individual and his performances and judge him based on all the stats because baseball, batting- wise, is a one man show - it's not a team game like football is. Also, there's no real equivalent in football to the "At Bat".

Barmy stuff. You almost feel sorry for Rodgers if in fact it turns out most signings weren't even his!

The success of Moneyball as a book and then a movie is a double edge sword. It led to a much increased interest in Sabremetrics and analytics but, it has also led more people to misunderstand statistics and how decision makers use it. With the transfer committee Liverpool are simply trying to use the continental model when it comes to player recruitment. Specifically the old Lyon model which they come to the decision on transfers through committee. The problem is the people Liverpool currently have on the committee might not be up to the job.

I'm going to miss his one armed Nazi celebration he did every time they scored, as if it was him who had scored some sort of wonder goal.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion; I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost, in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."
