Ferdinand to make move decision on Tuesday - report

LONDON (Reuters) - Rio Ferdinand says the decision to either stay at Leeds United or accept a possible 35 million pound move to seven-time premier league champions Manchester United is the toughest of his career.

The England centre back said after a meeting with new Leeds manager Terry Venables on Sunday that he would make his decision on Tuesday, the Sun newspaper reported.

"I told Mr Venables I would give him a decision on what I wanted to do within 48 hours,"he was quoted as saying in Monday's Sun.

"There are a lot of people I want to talk to about this. I will listen to what my family and close friends have to say and then make up my mind.

"This is a huge dilemma for me, one I have to get my head round.

"Mr Venables was everything I expected him to be. I have so much respect for him as a man and a coach. He spelled out all his plans and how much he wanted me to be part of them.

"But he's not a man who is going to get down and beg me to stay. He has too much pride for that and I wouldn't expect it.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has confirmed his club's interest in the 23-year-old, although he has not yet tabled a bid.

There is talk about it being £30-£35m. Personally, I think we should go to £35m if that's what it takes. We are desperate for him to sign........

Funny though that a player who says 'I have never asked for a transfer'

and a club who 'won't sell him' and say '(Rio) has a clause in his contract saying he can't go to another premiership club'

Need to

a) Get Venables to 'convince him that Leeds is where he should stay.

and b) Let Rio have 2 days to decide his future.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but are there not some contradictions in what has been said and what is actually happening? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Yeah but having said that, Leeds NEED the cash and it is pointless keeping a player that no longer wants to play for the club!!

I don't see it as a contradicton. Rio only said he never asked for a transfer, but he never said that he will not consider it if he received an offer. On the other hand Leeds certainly are reluctent to sell Rio, but if Rio insist to leave what's the point to keep an unhappy player?

Venables on a 2 year contract is a stop-gap. I hope whoever advises Rio tells him that.

Start of next season, Venables will be back on ITV and someone more long-term and recently-tested in management will be in charge.

And Rio could still be stuck at Leeds, his best chance of a move gone.

Excellent point ! Get Red Rio on the phone RIGHT NOW ! :D

Leeds are 2-3 seasons away from MAYBE having a great team. Rio would be a fool to wait so long and take that risk. He could end up as medal less as Gazza.

You're right Murt. If Rio wants to stick around at Leeds for success, he's gonna have a longer wait.

The way he talks of his family suggests to me, he's preference lies with moving them closer to Manc at the moment.

But lets not get carried away.

Agreed. Rio has said that anyone who thinks they know what he will decide is wrong because even he hasn't made up his mind yet.

That said, and all things considered, I really expect him to come.

Some questions going around in his mind (maybe)...

1) Do I have the balls to ask for a transfer?
2) Do I really owe Leeds anything, as Venables suggests?
3) Is Leeds the best place to win things?
4) Do I regard loyalty as outweighing these other factors?
5) Do I want to lose £1m in extra payments?
6) Is Venables the manager to bring success to Leeds?
7) Do I want to stay at Leeds when it's clearly in a bit of a mess?
8) Can Leeds break into the top 4 clubs? If so, can it do so consistently so I get years of European play, rather than bits and pieces?
9) Do I want to be public enemy number one amongst Leeds fans?
10) Do I want to piss off Alex Ferguson?

Don't discount Tel's persuasive abilities or that Leeds may hold out for an unrealistic price. Our Plc may not be prepared to go beyond 30m bearing in mind we need one or two others besides Rio.

Having said that, Rio would be mad not to jump at the chance of joining United. There's simply no comparison between the two clubs and Tel's temporary sojourn at Leeds is unlikely to bring much in the way of success, bearing in mind his dubious track record.

<a href="http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,9753,754859,00.html" target="_blank">Interesting article about why McClaren didn't get the job</a>

Note the bit about consulting the supporters

If it comes down to FEE I expect a long drawwwwwwwwwn affair that will be resolved eventually.

As for Venables, I think that his words are the only thing that can keep Ferdinand at Leeds.

Things to consider continued....

11)Can Leeds win trophies by selling their 2 best midfielders, Bowyer and possibly Dacourt. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" /> <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

AS for Leeds...to consider:

1) Can they afford to hold on to Rio....

a) In one season he will be able to go for 22 million
b)One season therefter (2 years left on contract) they either get him to sign a new contract or be forced to sell at possibly 18 to 20 million or lower.
why? Because the Pool nor Arsenal will pay more. Utd wont be interested anymore because they would have sorted their defensive needs.
This means all sorts of permutations.

Well, if Rio wants to be good, he should stay at Leeds.

Charges of arrogance aside, let's be honest, if he wants to take his place amongst the world's elite, he should go to United.

Also, does he want to watch everyone else play Champs League footie next season - again? Because no matter what Venables says, that's what he'll be doing.

I hope Rio doesn't join the endless list of players who made the wrong choice, Gazza and Shearer amongst them, who ended up with great respect but a lack of sustained success to match their talents.

Harry Rednapp has just said on Radio 5 Live that he believes Rio will sign for Man Utd. Rio called in for a tea and a chat while Harry was at a five-a-side championship yesterday.

Interviewer: "It must be a difficult decision for Rio."

Harry R. "Yeah, stay at Leeds on £35,000 a week or go to Utd for £70,000 a week, a really difficult choice!"

Of course, money actually has nothing to do with this.

Can you imagine anyone in their right mind turning down a 100% wage increase?

I was speaking literally, everything is about money. Its not an extra bonus or a free gym card from his employer. A rival company is offerning a 100% wage increase! I cant imagine anyone turning that down.

In fairness, Harry Redknapp did say that the dilemma facing Rio is that he has to be the "bad guy" and ask to move. Rio really doesn't want to offend anyone but when asked Harry said he was sure that Rio would not be able to resist the lure of OT - even though he has top respect for Terry V.

Who on earth 'greatly respects' Gazza?

I think he means in terms of ability and talent rather than personality or character (Gascoigne beating his wife and all). And Shearer is a surly git most of the time.

Even Fergie admits in his autobiography that Gascoigne was one of those "if only" players.

United have bid £32million for him and its been accepted by their PLC permission will be given for Rio to talk to MUFC tomorrow.

Rio is edging ever closer to becoming a united player, it is inevitable really.

Imagine if someone openly wanted to buy Beckham or Van Nistelrooy or one of our indispensible players, they would be met with a swift no and that would be it.

Leeds though: one day Ridsdale, all "bravadoed" up says he aint going anywhere and thats that! Now they are having to try and persuade him to stay.

HMMM real emphatic Rids-dull <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Send for the megastore scarf, asap!

He's a season ticket holder, anything big coming out of United is first relayed by phone to all season ticket holders.

The only person at United who might know if Rio's coming would be Wes.

Anyone have his cell #?
