Brazilian to Old Trafford

But for sure Fergies favorites are quality players, who are winners. Carlos is that. The only players in the Irish squad who are world class seem to be Robbie Keane and Carr (if fit).</strong><hr></blockquote>

Keane, Keane, Carr, Finnan, Duff & Given are 6 Irish players who i would call good enough for the Utd squad, ie improve it slightly.
O'Brien, Morrisson & Reid are three more who willbe up to that level soon enough.

I think steve finnan was the best full back in the w.c and that if carlos hadnt scored that free kick in 98 he wouldnt be thought of as highly he didnt score again for brazil until the w.cup he's great going forward but like ian harte cant defend

Travis Bickle whats, the story with the oirish bit dennis irwin was the most consistant left back in the premiership he would always be fergies first pick some of united's greatest players have been irish bought because of their ability not mentality

IMO, the only Irish players in the WC squad who are good enough to improve us are Robbie Keane and Damien Duff. It is not difficult to name at least 5 better backs than Carr and Finnan. Even Gary is better than the 2 mentioned (although he's technically lacking when going forward, long balls only!!!) We want improvement not just backups. Given is very good but not better than Fab, Rustu is better(except may be for the Ronaldo's goal). But this is just my opinion, no disrespect.

Roy Keane is already in the squad. Robbie Keane I agree, though a move to Sunderland isn't very convincing. Carr yes would go into our team, and would be a good buy. Duff I ommited. Given...not ahead of Bartez.

We also have O'Shea, and McCarthy should have taken him to Japan IMO.

But we could equally buy Owen, Ferdinand, Gerrard and several English players to improve our squad, so I still don't take the point of preferring Irish players over any other nationality.

Also, if we do go out and buy players who only performed well at the WC, we will end up with more Poborski and Jordi. Players who played well in one competition doesn't always perform well later for the club, many examples I think. Fegie knows this, that's why we have been tracking players for years before we make any moves. Like Fergie said, he alredy knew all the players he needed to know, it wasn't important for Utd to send scouts to the WC.

You could try following what I am saying.

Which is, indeed, that players get into the team because of their ability not nationality.

As for your last point about mentality, you might take issue with your fellow countrymen, as this is what he seems to be implying.

I never said we should buy Irish over any other nationality.

Speaking of Nationalities, I don't think cuts the mustard here. I think you're off the mark insinuating that SAF is such a fan of the Irish 'mentality' and 'attitude' that he would prefer Irish players over some other nationalities. Now, that may not be what you're saying, but that is the way it's coming across.

Paul McGrath, Norman Whiteside and Kevin Moran were all shafted by SAF shortly after he arrived. In Ireland I couldn't tell you the amount of people that said (at the time) that Fergie was anti-Irish and called him an orange bastard. Some United fans who now think the sun shines out his arse!

Fergie likes players of a particular mentality and attitude and I think that Finnan and Duff are both in that category. It is coincedence that this they are Irish and in any case, he has only shown an interest in Duff so far as I know. Both are quiet, reliable, good at their jobs, professional and do not court the press like a lot of other players in the PL, and this is what would appeal to SAF, IMO.

If he signs Duff, I'll be delighted because first and foremost Duff is a fantastic player, but that he is a fellow Irishman only secondary.

"Agreed Carlos is in no doubt the best full back their is but you could get a player very close to him for a fraction of that price, Finnan for example would be perfect, Fergies type of player too"

Going from the above you seem to be saying that Carlos is the best, but Finnan is Irish and therefore Fergies type of player. I'm not sure what your point about the Irish is otherwise.

The fact that hes Irish doesnt make him a great player, the fact that hes a great player with a great attitude does.
