Seen him play once and he looked pretty good young player. Just know it’s sort of signing we won’t make though, Rice or Longstaff will be our targets.

Same goes for players like Haaland and Havertz. Our transfer policy under Woodward was heavily agent driven now I think it will be focused on British based players or high profile cast offs. If this guy signs for Leicester and has a great season then we’ll be interested.

I truly think we have changed direction, we would never have signed James. I think we will try and do what we did last summer - a couple of expensive players coupled with a punt for south of £30m and this could be the punt even though it seems like we are looking at bringing him in January.

I meant under Woodward, I think Ole has been more open minded to left field options than his predecessors or has simply got through to Woodward. With Ole we have been linked to Longstaff, McGin and now Soumaŕe after having signed James.

I actually really like both players and they're very similar in profile. Zakaria is a couple of years older and is further along in his development. But Soumare eventhough being younger is potentially just as good with a price tag that could be seen as a bargain in the January transfer window.

Both players are technically very good and physically very powerful and would greatly help with upping the tempo in our play in offensive and defensive transitions.
 
I see we’ve been linked with Tonali as well so at least it seems that we are looking at proper midfield reinforcement as it’s severely lacking in depth and quality currently and if we can get this guy in January I’m all for it.

I think the main source was one of the British rags. Something about a club insider saying they have been aware of him for 18 months. Recently however Scouts were so impressed with performances that they are saying we can’t miss out on him and should move for him as soon as possible. Fee mentioned of 40mil plus but then something about the Brescia president saying he is worth 320mil.
 
Won't lie, I would prefer a player with more crispier passing than Soumare. I don't think McTominay has that penetrative level of passing either despite his great qualities, and he's sure to be a mainstay of the team. So a Tonali for me makes much more sense looking at the current composition of the squad.

We’ll be linked to dozens of players before January and most likely sign no one.

I think we’ll focus a lot on players in the Premier League rather than young players from Europe. Fact we were so hung up on Longstaff in summer shows where the focus is, which is a shame because you can buy better players for less.

Soumaré, Tonali, Rice and Maddison all coming in would be an absolute dream. Am I right in what I read somewhere about Soumaré being out of contract in the summer ?

I expect Pogba and Matic to both be gone in the summer so that only leaves McTominay, Pereira and Garner. I’d expect us to get at least £150 million for Pogba so that would effectively pay for Maddison and Rice and I’ve seen reports that Tonali can be got for £30-£40 million so Soumaré on a free too completes a new look midfield.

Look at Ndombele before he came to the EPL 38 ish games the past two seasons and has scored a couple this year already, but he is still not classed as ready for the league

I’m not sure what story you think those numbers tell? The only thing I get from them is that he is a regular this season.

If you think you can make a judgement based on those very rudimentary statistics then you are also having a laugh.

Last time I saw Ndombele play I’m sure he was left of a diamond in midfield - maybe he’s just not ‘ready’ to play out of position.

How can you come to that conclusion? We don't have one currently who is fit for purpose.

I'd love this to be true but can't trust our owners to reinvest any money they get. They'll probably be happy with buying just one midfielder

Why not flip this, how can people / posters watch a YouTube video and think he could replace Pogba?

Ndombele might be getting played out of position, there are other examples Fred is one.

Ndombele replaced winks on the weekend at the base of the middle, He's always the lower block of the middle.

Tot don't always play a diamond. By the way.

These are the type of midfielders that we need. If we can get Tonali and either of Soumare or Zakaria here, we would be heading in the right direction and have a great midfield for years. Garner, Levitt, and others coming through also.

I agree with this but there is also some merit in PL proven players problems arise when it becomes exclusive. You can't miss out on talent just because of where they come from, if we had done that under Fergie even our current manager wouldn't have had his chance with us.

We should be aiming much higher than Longstaff mate.
 
I think the Tonali rumours will stay just that. I don’t see one of the hottest properties in the Italian league NOT going to Juventus or at least staying in Italy somewhere. He’s having things like “The next Pirlo” thrown at him and my Italian mate is so hyped about him, saying that he’s only ever bought three Italian shirts with names on the back - Baggio, Del Piero, Pirlo and he thinks Tonali will be the fourth.

as for Soumare, just the kind of player I can see Ole going for. Young, hungry, dynamic with a good skill set and most importantly for the board, he’s cheap!
 
Tbh I would be happy with almost anyone in January. all these rumors of different players usually are far-fetched or completely wrong. Or maybe im just jaded after the summer window.

Zakaria would be the better defensive, but Soumare can play as box to box, and win back the ball and carry it. He is a big muscular midfielder. Both together would make us very strong in this area, if we had Maddison or Havertz in front of them.

One of the downsides of Soumaré's game is that, for a defensive midfielder, he's not exactly great at defending.
That could be down to his role on the pitch. Soumaré plays more as a box-to-box midfielder, so his physicality and stamina are his two biggest assets. He's certainly a competent defender and is very reliable when it comes to tackling, but it's his awareness of when a tackle is necessary which is the problem.
He isn't the greatest for sniffing out danger, so he would likely benefit from playing alongside a real midfield anchor. That would give Soumaré the freedom to work his magic elsewhere, so everyone wins.
 
I love these threads. Click on a thread title about a player I’ve never heard of and we have dozens of people agreeing that we need to get him bought right now. Obviously some of those people will have watched him and will have a better idea than me but, let’s be honest, some of them are just transfer mental cases who need their fix.

If as expected we lose Pogba and Matic on top of Herrera and Fellaini within the last year then there's no way we only sign one midfielder, I don’t think even Woodward and Judge are that incompetent on football matters.

It’s clear we need a playmaker and a defensive midfielder and that’s with Pogba and Matic in the squad. I can definitely see us signing all of Maddison, Rice and Soumaré but I see Tonali probably going to one of Juve, Milan or Inter so we’d still need a deep lying playmaker but if we kept Pogba and signed the three I think we can I’d be happy.

That’s not really flipping it, is it? YouTube has nothing to do with using appearances, goals and assists to judge a player’s suitability to play centre midfield. Anyway it’s another ridiculous way to form an opinion.

What is Fred supposed to be another example of? Someone who hasn’t played, scored or assisted enough to play in midfield?

Duncan Castles saying his contract actually runs out in 2022 and Lille have a €40m offer on the table for him.
 
I watched some of Soumaré and can definitely say that he isn’t enough good to play for Manchester United.
He lacks of ball control, his passing is avarage, sometimes he provides good tackles but doesn’t offer anything more.
The only reason to sign him is because he could come for free in July but in any case he wouldn’t add anything in terms of quality.

Manager gives a list, Woodward signs who he can, is allowed or wants to sign that’s how it works. Woodward, his lack of competence, lack contacts and understanding are a big part of the recruitment process.

It has nothing to do with us targeting certain players under Woodward and others. And tbh, you have not the foggiest about Woodward’s contacts, understanding or competence of signing players.
