Bitter spat between Man United technical director Darren Fletcher and angry fan at Old Trafford - with Scott McTominay also involved

On one side I love Fletcher as a player, the other side of me is just bewildered with the idea that he is in such a prominent position at the club with basically no experience for the role, working under a director of football who has never done that role and who has been at the club the entirety of the post Fergie debacle. Under a ceo who has never done the job before who learnt from Woodward and who has also been at the club for the post Fergie debacle.

And these are the people in charge of turning things around!! We are doomed!
Just because someone was at the club all those years doesn't mean they are responsible for the bad things that happened at the time. Allow people to be judged on what they do when they're in the job as long as they have the qualifications for it. A lot of times someone junior in a role replaces the senior and changes things for the better.

Judge people by what they do in the role not judge them harshly just because they were also an employee before.

Love how a lot of the fans seem to think they should know exactly what Fletchers role and responsibilities are.

Have to say I absolutely despise the entitlement some of our fanbase have. The likes of Goldbridge have a lot to answer for.

why goldbridge?

If the report is true then that fan is was well within his right to question the performance as a match going fan.

Why was he ‘questioning’ someone who didn’t play or select the team?
Went to the cinema to watch morbius the other day, should I have ‘questioned’ the bloke who sold me the ticket as to why the film was so shite?

Why is Fletcher even part of the backroom? Unless he is developing some genius masterplan for the new manager, I don't see why he is an important member of our future plans. Granted I'm generally against ex players having anything to do with United after Ole's tenure.

Why the feck is a technical director sitting on the bench?
I think ETH mentioned this that apparently in German football, this is actually a thing that a sporting director sits next to the manager on the bench. Well, instead of Murtough, it’s Fletcher the one who sits next to Rangnick.

“Some say they don’t know where he goes, where he comes from. Sometimes they find him on the bench, sometimes behind a concession stand handing out drinks. His name is Darren Fletcher, and he lives… in the twilight zone. (music que)”

It's normal for Sporting director's and even their assistants to sit on the bench in Germany. Michael Zorc (DoF) and Sebastian Kehl (assistant DoF) for example sit on the bench when BvB are playing.

Max Eberl who was the Sporting Director at Gladbach until very recently, has been involved in verbal altercations with rivals from the Gladbach bench on several occasions. He once hurled insults at Julian Nagelsmann, whilst Nagelsmann was Hoffenheim head coach, and Eberl was even sent off from the bench a few years back in a game against Freiburg.

"My education as a manager in top level football I had at Bayern Munich. There is hardly a better education for a coach or a manager.

‘I love the German model. In Germany it is a common thing that sporting directors sit right next to you on the bench there.

‘If you have a good sporting director, you know he takes a lot of the noise away around the manager – both internally and to the outside world.

‘He will back you up and will also take away all the hassle with football agents. That way I can fully concentrate on the team and the development of the players."

Sound like he's talking about a position that is level above Fletch's role (he was asnwering question that involved Overmars).

It's quite sneaky to cut the "I love German model" part out of that quote by whoever made those tweets, already ignoring the context.

I’m not sure why ‘’I love German model" is relevant. People asked why Fletcher on the bench.

Our interim manager is German. The point is that, Fletcher is in there probably because Rangnick wants sporting director on the bench. Murtough probably doesn’t have pro license coach while Fletcher has, so Fletcher got the pick on the bench as more suitable one than Murtough.

That part relevant because even Liverpool, City, Chelsea... are not German model. Not long ago, we often heard that we're trying similar model to Liverpool with transfer committee.

Even if we decided to change most recently after Ole sacking, it's too soon to say we're going places with this new German model. Fletch's job title/role (technical director, even in his own description of his duty) is not equivalent to what ETH description here about Overmars and sporting director in Germany. And if he's doing much of that part, the manager in RR would have known his role better. Because even without incoming in winter window, RR still had to communicate with upstairs about players departure; where directors work for their money in Germany model. Last but not least, fans have some power in German clubs' board.

I am not saying I know what Fletch does, or Fletch is shit. What I am trying to say is there is some blind faith convenient comparison when it comes to us. Be it Ole record was not unlike Klopp first couple year in Liverpool; Pep and Zidane done it with Barcelona and Real, Ole might... In reality, the situation is contextually very different from the get go.

Edit: about the being on the bench, I am curious how the regulation works with coaching license. I saw Paratici and that bald head scout who recently resigned from Tottenham, sit in the bench. Also these newly appointed technical coach in Germany sit on the bench freshly off their retirement. Murtough has been in the business for so long, it's strange if with his knowledge of his peers in the industry, he doesn't prepare for this scenario.

“Who the f are you?” A paying fan, one of millions without whom a rotational player like you who realistically only had around 2 truly top seasons would be absolutely nothing without their contributions to your wages.

Anyway, what is a technical director doing next to Rangnick? Is he Ralf’s boss or the 2nd in command? What’s Chris Armas then? An absolute shambles, we don’t even have hierarchical order at the top, and people expect us to challenge for the title. Imagine him sat next to EtH and RvP next season…
RVP?????
WTF would he be doing there!

Its clearly just about winning really.

Fans gonna moan, whine, upset just about anything really if the team is not winning anything for almost a decade after they used to win just about everything for 2 decades.

With all that emotion, couples with social media; fans can have their voices heard through out the world now and it constantly also.

Fans act like they know everything, how to run the club, train players, all the coach and manager must be doing nothing because we dont win anything.

You can have SAF or pep now on the bench and fans would still be bemouning they're not qualify.

British people are so nice even when theyre angry theyre just asking if youre okay.

Just another glorified x player that hasn't proved anything as a technical back bencher. Too much dead wood in there that needs to be removed.

Does any other club have the technical/football/whatever the feck he is director on the bench?
He’s on the bench more recently because he’s been asked to help coach as Ralph only has 2. Not sure why people find this so difficult to understand

i’ve heard the main reason we went for hag over poch is that fletcher thinks that hag can handle himself better than poch, due to his bald head and angrier resting face. hag will split his time here between first team coaching duties and offering any fan(s) that abuse fletcher outside for a straightener.

Exactly he’s not talking about fletchers role but people for some reason are thinking he’s doing the same job as murtough. He’s sitting there because he’s been helping coach in the interim

This. Fletcher is the main villain at the moment and of course cafe experts know what does he do or doesnt. According to them he doesnt do anything and they want him out. Its not that similar situations dont happen in other clubs where ex players get involved in club jobs and start from that. Nobody asks what does Cech do at Chelsea.

I remember when Ole got sacked, a bunch of people were complaining McKenna and Carrick didn't immediately follow him. Now they're complaining that Fletcher is helping with coaching.

And will complain if Fletcher will continue to be on the bench when Ten Hag comes. Bizarre.

Maybe JIM will answer his own question?
We're waiting.
If RR was working out as a coach there is zero chance idiots like this would give Fletcher credit for the appointment and the consultancy. Everyone on the forum was ecstatic with the move. Now they have decided to parrot that it was a stupid move and a light bulb goes off ... 'must have been that damn Fletcher...'

Madness mate, absolute madness.

Of course we should know. There is nothing to hide, and it's called transparency.

Nah but you could question the director if he was about.

Does anyone realise that you need more than 1 person to do interviews. I used to help my old boss interview when he was country manager and I was only a manager, interviewing for people who would be above me.
it’s only to ask questions, note their responses and discuss with murtough and Ralph if he was involved. Fletcher wouldn't be involved in the final decision. Why do you think there was more than 1 round? The CEO and the owners have the final decision. We need to stop sharing narratives that are pure nonsense

I wonder how many people would have a negative opinion of Fletcher if they weren't allowing themselves to be swayed by reading other people's negative opinions on him.

A portion of our fans are morons who believe every bit of nonsense pumped out

Spot on. These social media influencers who peddle this nonsense have a lot to be accountable for.

Of course we should know. There is nothing to hide, and it's called transparency.

Why? Why do you need to know what role everyone plays in the club?

Do you know what the likes of Cech do at Chelsea? Is that ever questioned?

https://www.si.com/soccer/manchesterunited/interviews/darren-fletcher-gives-clarity-role-manchester-united#:~:text=Darren Fletcher has clarified his, what exactly the situation was.
"With Ralf and his staff coming in, and Michael and Kieran choosing to move on, we had a quick transition process, so part of my role has been to assist with that, both on the training pitch and during games.”

“I guess that’s been the most visible part for me this season, but that’s really an addition to my overall technical director role. It’s been a brilliant experience since I took on the role.”

“I’m working closely with Nick Cox, as Head of Academy to look at the long-term strategy for bringing players through."

"We have to manage the balance between allowing them to develop and creating right steps for that without piling pressure.”

We have a good idea on his remit from the above, generally speaking. Of course the fan in the video is an idiot though

Goldbridge is an absolute tit who outright lies on his channel claiming no one knows what Fletcher does and that he serves no purpose. He's just an idiot clickbait ignorant man trying to get likes at the expense of putting down the club image as far as he can.

i think it’s pretty clear that geebs is fletcher’s dad. it’s pretty damning that even he doesn’t know what fletcher does at the club.
