Big Summer Clearout - Is it Going to Happen?

In some cases it's the wages issue. And this is the problem with luring players to sign based on wage offers that are higher than anyone else can or will pay.

United should start saying to potential new signings "we'll start you off on a decent enough wage and offer regularly improved contracts if you can prove you deserve it, but first and foremost you'd be playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so look elsewhere if that's not enough and you want an immediate bumper contract."
That's another good reason for a quick clearout and reset. The wage structure is a bit of a Pandora's box - as long as there are underperforming players in the squad on bloated contracts, new signings are unlikely to accept the reasonable terms you laid out.

Here's the situation from last season.

Starting XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelöf, Shaw, Herrera, Matic, Pogba, Lingard, Rashford, Martial

Second XI: Romero, Dalot, Bailly, Jones, Rojo, McTominay, Pereira, Fred, Mata, Lukaku, Sancez

We shouldn't have more than 22 senior players. This means Valencia, Darmian and Grant out.

Young, Smalling Matic and Lingard should be moved to the second XI. This means Rojo, Bailly, Pereira and Mata out.

We have bought James, which should mean Sanchez out.

And De Gea, Pogba, Herrera and Lukaku wants to go.

Situation next season:

Starting XI: New GK, New RB, New CB, Lindelöf, Shaw, New CM, New DM, New CM, New RW, Rashford, Martial

Second XI: Romero, Dalot, Smalling, Jones, Young, McTominay, Matic, Fred, Lingard, New CF, James

That's 12 out and 8 in this summer, which I think is needed.

Seems you just came out as a winner in Musical chairs competition?

Said it many times, but Jones, Smalling, Young, Lingard will all still be here and as fans we’re going to have the same arguments about their mistakes we had last season (and the year before that and the one before that and the one before...etc etc). We will clear some players out but some of the problem players will remain.

An issue I have with the possible ‘Buy Young, but British’ strategy is that we don’t have any good senior players to lead them unlike during the times of the Class of 92 and Rooney and Ronaldo. They’re just being introduced to a player culture of failure and they are expected to turn it around. I think a big factor in Arsenal’s lack of success during the Cesc,RVP,Nasari years was a lack of leadership on the pitch.

Great post, which is why we need to bring in some characters. Maguire is deffo a big voice in the dressing room, with a healthy dose of Northern grit. We saw it in the WC. We need at least one international captain in the squad. We saw how Kompany led that City squad for a decade. We need someone like that to set the example for the younger players, because Smalling and Jones are not the example. One of the reasons why Young was made captain, is because there is nobody else to stand up and set the example. A ready made captain is imperative to our success.

Ideally we should be midway through the early stages of a mass exodus, and midway through the early stages of a mass spree (basically a massive revamp). I imagine football transfers are more complex than we the public think though so I'm not surprised.

Its infuriating that alot of transfer activity occurs in late july/early August but it's just the way it is.
