So many great players have come through the rabks at Man Utd, but which was the best player EVER to be signed for us?

Was it Keano? Eric? Pallister? Scheimecel? Van Nistelrooy? Solskjaer? Or somebody else.

I'd have to go with £1.6million(then record)(i think} Roy Keane!

Keano cost us 3.75 Million from Forest if i remember correctly. For me it has to be either Schmeichel who cost a couple of hundred grand and turned into the best goalkeeper in the world or Eric for 1.2 million was an absolute steal.

top five imo

eric cantona
peter schmichel
denis irwin
ole
and bringing mark hughes back

My Top 5:

1. Eric Cantona - Simply for being my football hero growing up

2. Peter Schmeichael - Best keeper of the last 20 years bar none

3. Bruce/Pallister - Best defensive pairing you'll ever get. Solid as a rock.

4. Denis Irwin - Brilliant servant for the club. Scored some important goals in his time and kept the left back position for himself for years and years.

5. Brian McClair - Choccy scored some incredibly important goals in his time.

I'd also include Ole and Teddy in the top 10. You may see that I havent included any pre-1985 signings. Why? Because I wasnt born then and I didnt see every single performance that the likes of Best, Charlton, Law, et al put in - just their best bits. And you cant judge anything by that alone!

Value for money makes it hard to go past Ole, The Great Dane and Eric.

By today's standards 3.75 million for Keano was great business as well.

Dennis Irwin also didn't cost that much and was a fantastic player for many many years.

yep i would gop with that!

but i cant help but think of the big dutch man!

Cantona
Kanchelskis
Ole
Keano
Schmeichel
Irwin
McClair

The list could go on.

Outside of the fergie era I would nominate Robbo - bought for a record 1.75 Mil in 1981 - went on to dominate the team for more than a decade - and if he had half the players surrounding him we have now would have won countless trophies. Looking further back I think you'd have to look at the signing of Denis Law from torino back in 1963(?) - by all accounts was the final piece to the great '60s team that Busby built.

The amount accredited to Remi was never really spelled out and most of the press claimed it was inflated to take some pressure off Robbo for smashing the record (which I think was just over 1.1 at the time) - anyway it was a huge transfer at the time.

Not to be outdone City (a legitimate rival in those days) repsonded by signing Steve Daley from Wolves for 1.5 Million shortly afterwards. If you've never heard of him count yourself lucky.

can't disagree with
eric
schmikes
ole
keano
dennis irwin,

interestingly united bought very few players in 1970s and 1980s compared to most Div 1 clubs.
the only other that i'd like to add is Lee Sharp at about £100k aged 17, from Torquay wasn't it ?
at the time an absolutely outstanding buy.
RVN, although expensive and a year late must be the best centre-forward/striker that we've bought since Denis Law from Torino.

cant believe im the only one saying sparky, he cost us feck all and he is a red legend a real united player, never took any shit and scored some really important goals in our history!

Yeah I will also name sparky in my top 5.

Top 5:

1. Cantona

2. Schmikes

3. Ole

4. Keano

5. Sparky

6. Irwin

Talking about Hughes most important goal I think its the semi-final against Oldham with a brilliant volley that earned us a replay

For buying unknowns and turning them into stars, it's Ole and Kanchelskis all the way.

Stam? over 10 mill and only played a couple of seasons..hardly a bargain.

Id have to say Schmikes (bargain..best keeper in the world), Bruce (steadied a shakey ship), Irwin (for pure consistency wont be beaten), then Robson & Cantona

Sparky came through the youth system didn't he? I didn't include him because he wasn't a signing as such.

Not really. Robbo cost more many years earlier.

he said the big dutch man, which is what they used to sing about Stam..so i take it thats who he meant?
possibly i could have assumed wrong.

i think it was 800ish. Id rate Brucey as certainly Fergies 2nd best signing after Schmikes.
Bruce came in at a time when United were struggling defensively and steadied the ship. Its a credit to him that he remained in the side through the years when the other players became a lot technically better.
For me Brucey is a legend, certainly of my lifetime. Ill never forget the season where he scored something like 17 goals. Admittedly he did take penalties but thats not bloody bad for a CB!

1) great dane
2) our king

only because the great dane gave us more years of outstanding service
our king gave us few but memorable years/moment

ERIC. Turned a good team into a great one. There was a supporting cast, but he made it happen.

well we flogged him for £1.5 million cause greedy cnut edwards needed some money, then we bought him back a few years later for roughly the same fee.

Schmikes because as great as Eric was, he never quite cut it in Europe.

Thinking about it, it was a good bit of business. Bought for £10million, Won 3 league titles, 1 European Cup and an FA Cup and then sold him on for a profit. Month after selling him he was banned for drug use.

Was this drug thing ever proved?

he was banned. is that not proof enough?
him and the rest of them have never disproved it

Doesn't anyone remember the transfer to end all transfers...when United picked up the infamous, able, brilliant, gifted, mega-superstar, athlete, Mr. Goalstopper himself...MARK BOSNICH??!!!

Edwards was on a 1% of transfer profits per season at that point and Sparky didn't really want to go. Since we re-signed him I agree with listing him here. Shame he ended up going on a free because United cocked-up his new contract signing.
