Best of black music

Man, Sam Cooke was a treasure that the world was robbed of, he had the voice and above all the lyrics. As opposed to the majority of Motown artists, Cooke used to write his own stuff and at the time to make commercial gospel/soul appealing to the white masses required a stroke of genius and he was indeed one. I have like 60 songs by him and I love them all.

True!

Check out Peter Guralnick's biography on him ("Dream Boogie")sometime if you wanna read more, i'm about half way through it at the moment it's a really good read for Sam fans!

By the way, Guralnick also wrote an incredible book on Southern Soul and an Elvis biog which totally changed my view on an artist who a number of black music people had previously called racist (untrue)

Some of the best and most effective music is so simple, one of the things that make me love the soul of Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Marvin and all the rest

I turn 20 in under 2 weeks. And what exactly does that comment mean? That most people limit themselves to listening to one genre of music?
How is "black" a genre of music?

Marain Anderson opera singer
Count Basie jazz musician
Chuck Berry Rock n Roll
James Brown Soul
George Clinton Funk
Jimi Hendrix Rock
Tupac Rap
Charley Pride Country

I'm being torn a new one here, and rightly so. When I see the term 'black music' I immediately think of rap, r&b and hip-hop (teenager, remember?), which excludes the other, what I perceive to be older, musical styles that big mouth listed above. Anyway, I'm an ignorant a-hole. I'll go back to my hole and listen to some Kyuss. Peace out.

Top 5 :
Marvin Gaye
Temptations
Stevie Wonder
Sly and the Family Stone
Otis Redding

Jurassic 5. Run DMC. Beastie Boys (even though they're white jews). Apart from them, all 'black music' is crap.

You are a loser of the highest order who dosent have a fecking clue what he is talking about. You wouldnt have any of what you would recognise as modern music without the influence of early black artists.

Tupac? Oh come on, and Count Basie...

:nervous: I'm so not into Rap that Tupac is the first (probably only) name that came into my head. Similar with Count Basie but I could have named several Jazz musicians if I'd put my mind to it. have to admit to relying on Google for the opera singer and couldn't find any other black C&W artist.
