Man, Sam Cooke was a treasure that the world was robbed of, he had the voice and above all the lyrics. As opposed to the majority of Motown artists, Cooke used to write his own stuff and at the time to make commercial gospel/soul appealing to the white masses required a stroke of genius and he was indeed one. I have like 60 songs by him and I love them all.
True!
Check out Peter Guralnick's biography on him ("Dream Boogie")sometime if you wanna read more, i'm about half way through it at the moment it's a really good read for Sam fans!
By the way, Guralnick also wrote an incredible book on Southern Soul and an Elvis biog which totally changed my view on an artist who a number of black music people had previously called racist (untrue)
Some of the best and most effective music is so simple, one of the things that make me love the soul of Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Marvin and all the rest
