Best Living Under 50 Guitarist

in terms of songwriting and riff and solo making ability, My favorites are Slash, Tom Morello, Jerry Cantrell and jack white

Can't believe some people think Slash is a great guitarist. If you are talking hard rock/metal in terms of both speed and techique you have to say Hammett would win, by a country mile.

I must add James Hetfield to this list. He is one of the best heavy metal, rhythm guitarists but I'm not sure how old he is.

Ugh, that list is horrible. Must be going off influence rather than actual skill.

I loved Nirvana, but Cobain's guitar skills were utter shite. Probably even worse than Noel Gallagher's.

Cobain was certainly not the most techinically proficient guitarist but I think he had a very unique style. There are countless imitators of Hendrix, Van Halen, Hammet, etc, but I have never seen anyone come close to capturing the aggression and unpredictibility of Cobain's playing. He had an ear for a simple, catchy chord progression/riff and he made remarkable use of feedback in his solos.

Despite starting life as a guitarist by playing Nirvana songs, I have never been able to play a Nirvana song exactly as Cobain would have.

Rory Gallagher ,if he hadn't died.:(

Love this guy.

I didn't realise that he was dead. I swa him a couple of times in the 80's. Great performer.

Although he wouldn't gualify because he would be just shy of 60 now if he were alive.

Agreed...as far as technique is concerned he pissed all over Slash in my opinion.

@Salvation....Dave Mustaine and Marty Freidman better than Hammett? Can't agree to be honest...i thought Mustaine was terrible when he was in Metallica and he didn't get much better with MegaDeth.

For Metallica Hammett has churned out far better solo's over the years even if some are howlers.

That's not what i said

Mustaine had his times. I liked Kill 'Em All, and songs like Motorbreath, Four Horsemen and Seek and Destroy were classics. Plus his few Megadeth albums. More thrashier but in your face brilliance. Justice was similar but felt different 'cos of Hetfield's more mature vocals

Still think this man would've been the undisputed best had he been around mind:

Mark Knopfler

Missed out by about 8 years, but I totally agree. Sultans of Swing, off the Alchemy Live album, is absolutely SUPERB If you can, watch it on DVD. The sound that he gets out of that guitar, without much hand movement at all, is brilliant. :D

Showing my age, and going further than the 50 year old rule:

Clapton
May
Beck
The Edge
Hendrix

I can't stand these buggers with talent!!!
