Best ever summer transfer window?

2009/10

Sold Ronaldo

Bought Owen, Obertan, Valencia. Value in the market!

If something i learned all these years is that you must wait few years to rate transfer window. One season is too early to judge.
Summer 2016 looked amazing in first season but later not that much.
On the other hand players bought in summer 2008th brought huge success in next couple of years despite not being key players.

But if i must (:D):
Casemiro = 8.5
Eriksen= 8
Antony =6.5
Lisandro =7
Malacia = 5
Dubravka= 1
Wout= 3
Butland: ??

Better than Veron of course, and Makit. But 20m for 1 season, and you call that a great success?

Yes. When that gets you a League title you clearly would not otherwise have won, then that is a great success.

Wasn't that great in hindsight. Exciting at the time, but only one of them actually ended up having a good career at United.
They were valuable part of a team which won 3 PL in a row, one CL (plus another final) and world club championship. That was good investment.
Good transfers are not only ones when you buy key players. Nani gave us 5 or 6 good years, Anderson was solid backup option in those years, Tevez was literally one of our key players next two years and Hargreaves gave us only one year but that year he was major part in winning CL and PL. 25 mil for PL and CL is a decent deal imo.

How could anyone not? We went on to become our top goascorer and by far our best player in a year we won the league. If we could sign a player for £50m in the summer knowing we'd only get one season out of them but they guaranteed we'd win the league, would anyone say no?

It's also a bit off that you're suggesting he did nothing at all the following two seasons btw, while he wasn't at the same level admittedly & did pick up some injures, he did reach double figures in league goals both years.

I genuinely think you're the first person I've ever seen label RVP a flop.

81/82

Bryan Robson, British record transfer fee
Frank Stapleton
Paul McGgrath
Remi Moses

Norman Whiteside transferred from the United reserves

I think 05/06 was our best ever January transfer window, bringing in Vidic and Evra who both went on to be all-time United greats.

Not technically summer but a good shout. The following summer was also excellent business as we brought in Van der Saar and Carrick to complete that great 06-07 team.

Stam
Blomqvist
Yorke

hard to beat. Prob best defender ever to play in to league and for United to replace Pallister. Back up for Giggs who had fitness issues and a man you helped get Cole in form and be successful try to try kinda replace Eric where Sheringham struggled the season before.
For that season all 10/10 signings

Agreed, because with those additions, that team went on to win the fecking treble.

Also the summer of Nani, Anderson, Tevez, and Hargreaves was something special.

I would definitely say no. Only Newcastle will think like that, or City on Champions League.

You would support the manager in BUILDING a team, not a single season flip flop

Not the worst price for a championship if you ask me

I do agree with you on that. Perhaps as Fergi's quickie parting gift, just get it done and pass the problem to his successor.

On the other hand, I still cannot get over the what-if question.

Had we be more thorough in our scouting, or an extra year of patience, we should have gone for Robert Lewandoski. Robert was just getting noticed in 2012, and Dortmund would love to sell him to ANY foreign club in summer 2013. Instead they were "forced" to retain him for another season and then let him go for free to BM, who subsequently serve BM for another 8 seasons.

So 20m for a single-season wonder, or 30-40m for a top striker for the next 8 seasons.

While it's encouraging, It's really too early to judge the Antony and Malacia in particular.

Everyone is talking about purchases, but a great transfer window is one where you move on players you want rid of. Arguably Poga to Juve was the best transfer related to Manchester United last summer.
Im not sure we can class Pogba to Juve as a great transfer. In fact it was a terrible one in the sense we got nothing for it and allowed him to run his contract down for a free transfer.

We pay more than that for a player pretty much every season. You'd turn down a player guaranteeing a league title for it if they'd only have one decent season? Christ

That's the treble winning transfer window.
Can't beat that.

I think some fans are quite accepting of not winning the league.
The concept of winning is lost on some, especially young people who are taught that you can still win a trophy if you finish last.

I'd take the league title at any cost and deal with the aftermath later.

You can’t beat the transfer windows 98 and 2007. You miss out on the league by 1 point/win the league and then improve the squad where exactly you need it and then go on to win the league (again) and CL the very next season.
And for all of Hargreaves’ injuries which followed, he was key in 2008 not only in midfield but also in defence whenever Vidic and Co were injured.
Tevez was also a key player.
And they were hardly club record signings (not cheap but not that expensive either).

I prefer this kind of signings to big money signings who stay for 5-10 rather average seasons and in that period contribute to a league cup and Europa league.

81/82 Vs 22/23

Prime Robbo and Remi Moses > End of career Casemiro and Erikson

Paul McGrath > Martinez

Antony vs Frank Stapleton ? time will tell

Norman Whiteside transferred from the reserves > Anthony

As opposed to him sitting injured all year on huge wages?

We had zero choice on him leaving for free. Utd didnt want him to leave on a free. So can’t really be regarded as a good transfer decision by the club.
