Woodgate blasts Berbatov as the Bulgarian's Old Trafford switch inches closer

Jonathan Woodgate has accused his Tottenham team-mate Dimitar Berbatov of damaging the reputation of professional footballers as the striker’s move to Manchester United inched closer.

United are becoming increasingly confident of sealing the £28million capture before the transfer window closes at midnight on Monday.

Last week the Bulgaria striker was left out of the Spurs team beaten by Sunderland because manager Juande Ramos thought the striker was not right mentally.

Defender Jonathan Woodgate has blasted Dimitar Berbatov's conduct throughout his protracted deal to Manchester United
And, if a deal is not completed beforehand, a decision will have to be made whether he plays for Tottenham at Chelsea this weekend.

But Woodgate is in no doubt what should happen.

He said: ‘If he was fit and said he didn’t want to play, I’d be disappointed.

He’s a Spurs player so you’d expect him to give 100 per cent.

‘It hasn’t exactly boosted the reputation of professional footballers in this country from the supporters’ point of view.

'If it was me and I was in the same situation, I’d be working for the club as hard as I could until told otherwise.

‘If I don’t want to be somewhere, I’d still give my all — every training session, every game, all the time.

'It’s a hard situation. It doesn’t give out a great message, but it makes the boys work twice as hard for each other.
‘There are always two sides to a story, he’s handled it the way he’s had to handle it.’

Berbatov’s team-mates seem to accept a move to the Premier League and European champions is inevitable.
Defender Didier Zokora was heard saying: ‘Goodbye and good luck’ to the Bulgarian as both prepared to leave the car park at Spurs’ training ground on Friday afternoon.

With United directors present in Monte Carlo in advance of the Super Cup Final against Zenit St Petersburg and Tottenham also on the Cote D’Azur for the UEFA Cup draw, it is understood that contact was made and that a deal is now very likely to be in place by the end of the weekend.

United sold another striker on Friday as the injury-prone Louis Saha moved to Everton — a clear indication that Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting an attacking player to arrive before the window closes.

Having had offers of £20m and £25m knocked back, United have agreed to go to £28m and have been haggling with their Barclays Premier League counterparts over the structure of the payments.

Spurs themselves have lined up a replacement, with Russia’s Roman Pavlyuchenko in London for a medical before his signing from Spartak Moscow is announced.

Lets go all out and get him now, we have no matches for another 2 weeks.

When is the last time a striker actually scored for us? lol.

Vidic V Zenit.

Fletcher V Portsmouth.

Fletcher V Newcastle.

Nothing in the Charity Shield.

Nothing against Juventus.

Own Goal and Gibson against Peterborough.

We don't have a striker apart from Campbell.

I'm classing Rooney and Tevez as strikers at this moment in time.

Rooney can't play that lone role at all though. Both like to drop deep and are best dropping deep.

Spurs are rubbing their hands tonight because they have us by the bollox.

The reason he's not trying is because he plays for Spurs. He knows he's doomed. As should you by now you floppy-haired eejit.

The last thing we wanted to do is look desperate but this performance has done exactly that. We have a goalscoring problem and its plain to see. Our main strikers are just not firing right now.

Should we start a Suicide Watch thread for the posters most at risk of self-harm if United don't sign Berbatov by midnight September 1st?

I'm quiite worried for the safety of a couple of posters on this page.

hehe who do you think are in trouble charleysurf?

Mostly a couple of posters not too far from my post. They seem to be getting more desperate by the hour. I'm genuinely worried that Fergie will have blood on his hands if he can't force this transfer through :nervous:
