That's such an unbelievably unfair statement. Van gaal has so much young and up coming talent it's frightening. He's signed Shaw a teenager, Herrera, Rojo, Blind di Maria all in their mid 20s. Memphis is 21. Darmian is 25. We have probably the youngest team in the league thanks to lvg. Say what you want about BS signing but don't tell me lvg and Woodward have some galatacos hard on and stop makin it seem like we are signing an entire first 11 of past it stars. That's just simply not true
Fortunately I didnt say that ('galacticos hard on etc').
Again completely wrong.
The problem hasn't been giving players not good enough less chances. It's been not strengthening he's squad.
Cleverley simply wasn't good enough. If you think the chances we gave him were sufficient I don't know which player you watches. Scholes playing ahead of him wasn't the obstacle. His performances were.
Wilson? Really? He looked completely out of place last season. He has a lot of work to do.
Fabio has done squat so far in his career not even impressing at QPR so I'm not sure what that's all about.
This is probably the first time I'm hearing that our issue is not giving young players a chance. Very strange.
Its easy to say that in hindsight about players like Fabio who were never given a real chance. If Januzaj hadnt had his breakthrough season with Moyes you/we would probably be saying the same thing about him. My point remains that you dont know if these players are good enough until you actually give them some games and given them a chance to show what they can do. That doesnt mean a 5 minute sub appearance here and there, it means getting a few games on the trot to show what they are capable of. Despite your comments, there was a time when Cleverley was regarded as a bright prospect for us, and so was Welbeck. I am a firm believer that players need consistent gametime to establish their match rhythm and play well, and that sporadic appearances here and there do not help - Nani is an example of this.
We can say "We're Man United, we have a great record with youth!" but where have all these players been over the last couple of years? Our biggest prospect (that we admittedly poached) was Pogba and he left because he wasnt given a chance in the team. Januzaj was compared with Sterling two years ago and now one is being touted around for a £50m transfer while the other is still warming the bench and potentially getting loaned out. Welbeck may not have developed into a world class #9, but he was definitely good enough for a place in the squad and would have done more for us last year than Falcao or RVP, same applies to Hernandez. Welbeck being a Manchester who had been at the club since age 8, left to join one of our rivals because of a lack of gametime.
Our ability to actually nurture and develop our young players into first teamers in recent years has been abyssmal, frankly, and signings like Schweinsteiger will not help in that regard.
He adds that he can jump in instead of Carrick when Carrick is injured and he can play nr. 8 too. Not to mention leadership, winning mentality and so on..
Carrick has a pretty good injury record, last season was not the norm for him. I am not convinced that we need to sign a 31 year old as cover for a 34 year old, for the experience that he brings.
For one, we have no one as good as him. But leaving that small bit aside he's tailor made for lvg's system. How can you fail to see that?
I have no issues with what you want. I like us signing younger players as well. But does the whole squad need to be full of 22-24 year olds? It seems ridiculously close minded to me.
We havent seen him play in the PL yet. The same "he is the best in the world" arguments were made last summer for Di Maria and Falcao. There was a Bayern supporter in this thread a couple of pages back speaking about his view on Bastian last season that he slowed down their game. Personally I havent watched enough of Bayern to make a judgement, but I question how anyone can say with confidence that he is better than all of our current players, when there are so many risks and variables at play (fitness, new country, different league, age etc).
Dont understand this. Cleverley had too much chances if you asked me. He played a lot but proved he's a average or below average player. Fabio was meant to be more talented but where is he now? I dont even know in which club he plays.
You dont give youth chance after chance if they're not good enough.
How do you know if they are good enough if you dont give them a chance? It is a chicken and egg argument. The Fabio example is useful because we could almost see what would have happened if he had chances, thanks to his identical twin brother on the other flank. It is reasonable to assume that if Fabio had been given comparable gametime to Rafael, he would have developed similarly.
The Da Silva twins I think are a great case study for how big of a difference getting first team gametime makes.
I think the posts sounding out those who were on the fence about Schweinsteiger are a bit over the top. Both sides have fair arguments as to why they are in the camps they are. People aren't saying they are disappointed or saddened at the prospect of Schweinsteiger joining, but that they don't want a short-term fix like him to be the only addition. There's nothing wrong with wanting the club to go out and buy players on the cusp of their prime or already world class, just as there is nothing wrong with bringing in proven experience with plenty to offer in game intelligence. Success has been known to mean both on occasion. As long as we continue to have evidence of both, you can expect people to meet at a contented middle ground.
This.
