Baseball Off-Season Thread

There is word of a deal that would send Nomar Garciaparra and Scott Williamson to the White Sox from Boston for Magglio Ordonez. I like this deal!

Old news: The A-Rod deal is off. Way off. Looks like Manny and Nomar are staying for at least one more year. We're better off this way, if you ask me.

Older news: Yankees suck.

 You sound a bit jealous taffy. Losing have you down? Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone and 1918! It's actually more fun when the Yanks let you think that you have a chance. Happy New Year!

I see Georgie Porgie has been whispering things in your ear while he feels you up in your sleep.

At least I'll go to heaven when I die, pal. You bandwagon-jumpers have a special spot reserved for you in hell.

See you in October.

 You are a bigger joke than the Sux. Heaven? You must have been up all night thinking of that lame remark. I know it's doifficult for somebody with your intelligence to understand, but I live in NY and I'm a Yankee fan. To you that makes me a "bandwagon-jumper." That is just plain stupid.

Doifficult, indeed.

Looks like Zimmer's gotten to you too.

See you in October.

Are the Yankees obligated to pay Aaron Boone's salary this season when his contract stated he could not participate in off-season basketball? I think I would inform both Boone and the Player's Union that I am going to deny the payment of salary this year for violation of contract. I'd then let the Union sue me. If they win in court, then a contract is basically a piece of shit to be flushed. However, the player and the union should not have a leg to stand on in court as a signed contract is a certified document of agreement between two or more parties. And breaking a rule set forth is a violation of the contract and should null and void the deal.

Meanwhile, I assume Enrique will start at 3B and the Yankees will pursue other candidates between March and July, depending on Enrique's play. I do wonder if they might tinker with Soriano at 3B during Spring Training. However, Soriano makes quite a few errors at 2B, I can only imagine the number of errors he'd make at 3B...30-40 would be my guess. I thought about them signing Dean Palmer, but he retired and I'm not sure if he was under contract or a free agent. Boone is not much of a hitter, but they will lose his defensive work.

According to the contract the Yankees are not obligated to pay Boone. From all accounts I've seen, the contractual language is pretty clear. It was the last year of his deal, so what they do could depend on whether they want him back for 2005. I don't think it will be Enrique. They have signed Lamb and a couple of others to look at in spring training, and Almonte is a possibility. There isn't a whole lot of third basemen out there.

Yanks have a good one on the way up though - Duncan - a recent #1 pick.

Yankees traded for MIke Lamb; they should have traded for hank blalock. They tried trading for albert pujols in a package that contained soriano. They should just get A-rod. yankees will look much different this year. I must admit as a yankee fan it will be weird seeing guys like sheffield, lofton, kevin brown in yankee pinstripes. Yankees have not stated whether they will pay boone and also they released drew henson who will try to play american football

I believe its 6 days till pitchers and cathers report cant wait for the season.

Sure, I'm down with that.

Marcello, Why don't you come into the league? It's always fun to beat up on Texans. ;)

I got burned out on Fantasy sports. I have a hockey team now sitting in last place but I was disinterested after one week. Just have more things going on. Thanks for the offer though.

Yankees looking to sign Travis Lee to back up Giambi at first.

As of right now, Yankees have Tyler Houston, Mike Lamb, Enrique Wilson, Miguel Cairo and Erick Almonte for third, but I think they want a proven third basemen. A good fit would be Adrian Beltre. Since the Dodgers are going to be bad this year, the Yanks may be able to get him during the season.

Where did you hear this because the yankees signed tony clark already? Travis Lee would be much better than tony clark thou. I would love it if they just get rid of Mr. July, Jason Giambi.

I saw it today in both the NY Daily News and the NY Post. It not only affects Clark though. Bernie is slated to DH. If Lee plays first, then Giambi is the DH and Bernie sits unless he beats out Lofton in CF. Typical George - it's probably a shot at Cashen who signed Clark. Lee would be much better though because he's a gold glove-type fielder. George just signs people and lets Torre figure it out.

It's all Yankee fans. :D and a good source of information.

I can confirm this too...my good friend lives in Fort Worth, TX and he informed me this afternoon that talks will take place in the next few days. The deal will send ARod to NYY for Soriano, Contreras, and a catching prospect. Personally, Texas will need a SS so I'd rather get Almonte instead of a catching prosepct. Soriano at 2B means Young moves to CF, although it has been said he might play SS this year. Also, the Rangers will take on some of the contract, which has 4 years remaining before ARod can opt out. I figure Texas will pay about $5 million per year for the next four years. I believe ARod's salary is about $23 million the next four years.

Lofton
Jeter
ARod
Sheffield
Matsui
Posada
Giambi

fecking scary.

What's ridiculous about the ARod saga is the player (ARod) said he would take less money to go elsewhere but the union (greedy bastards) said he could not do that. It's the player's money right? The union has no say in what the player wishes to do with his money. My two cents. I hope someday the baseball players union will fall apart. Then baseball will finally have some control over these ridiculous contracts, to include guaranteed contracts which is stupid.

In other news, wonder how much longer Bonds can conceal his steriod usage. I figure 25-50% of the major league players juice, and I wouldn't doubt if Sosa was one of these players too. I do care if these players are juicing and it's giving them an unfair advantage over other players.

I think it would be near impossible that the union would fail; i dont know how or why but they have so much power. I think they had a point with the restructing of A-rod's deal; I think it would have open up the floodgates for other types of these deals.

Steriods: I been bitching about it for a couple years; Ever since mcguire was on the andro stuff. I care becuase these are not natural players we are seeing and it questions the intergrity of the game

PLayers admitted use: Conseco and Ken Caminiti
Players that i think did them off the top of my head:
Mcguire, Sosa, A-rod, Brett Boone, Juan Gonzalez, Giambi

Also the World Cup of baseball would not be possible because of yup you guessed it mandatory drug testing.

ESPN SportsCenter confirmed that at 2pm EDT the trade will be announced. ARod to NYY for Soriano and a player to be named later (the Yanks will allow Texas to take a top minor league prospect). Texas will take $67 million worth of salary the final 7 years of his 10 year deal. However, ARod can opt out after the 7th year (2007) and elect FA. If so, ARod loses roughly $81 in salary.

Breakdown of ARod's contract
2001: $21m + $10m bonus.
2002: $21m
2003: $21m
2004: $21m
2005: $25m
2006: $25m
2007: $27m
2008: $27m (player option to exercise 3 years)
2009: $27m
2010: $27m
The deal includes $36m in deferred payments to be paid between 2011-2020 at 3 percent interest per annum. Conract had clause that said ARod must earn $2m more than any other SS.

Did you see Ben Aflack! talking shit today? He was ranting about the Yankees buying player after player and that no one comes up through their farm system. Hello Ben...Boston has signed how many players the last few seasons. Such a bitter, no acting cnut. BTW, who cares what Aflack! says?

Wasnt boston trying to do the same exact thing a month ago, ben??

Stop crying

NY is going crazy over A-Rod. There was a 2 hour wait at Modells yesterday to get A-Rod jerseys.

What is an A-rod? Sounds a bit kinky to me

Maddux signs a 3 year, $24 million deal with the Cubs. Cubs vs. Yankees anyone? Long season though, anything can and will happen. Post season should be exciting as usual.

Who didn't like John Henry's bitching about a salary cap? Talk about sour grapes.

He's got his own big contracts too. Look at Manny, Nomar, Schilling and Pedro.

The word on the streets here in Finland is that Maddux changed his mind and remains with the Braves. "I only have one or two more shots at the world series and my best chances at another ring is with the Braves" says Maddux to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

I can confirm this. Maddux is originally from Finland and we all follow these trade rumors closely. We are very proud of him. He is a former pitcher for the Helsinki Pirates. Then he joined the Cubs, and later he became the best pitcher in the world for the Braves. A Finnish national hero he is.

 Maddux was born in San Angelo, TX, and was raised in Las Vegas, NV, where he still resides. When did he live in Finland?
