Barthez to go ? :(

From FootballBC (probably made up therefore):
English giants Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked with Fenerbahce goalkeeper Rustu Recber.
The Turkish international is also interesting Real Madrid and was being chased by Barcelona before talks opened with Benfica No1 Robert Enke.

Aston Villa has reportedly already had an offer knocked back by Rustu's representatives.

The Turk is keen to quit Fener in the close-season for a move to a major foreign competition.

All Recber said is that he would only move to a big club. They're piecing that statement together with Barthez leaving rumours to create a brand new story.

'have been linked' must be the dodgiest journo trick in the book, it should be followed by 'by [insert source here]', but in fact its followed by 'by me in my head'. Anyway, who is this Rectal guy?

There's another article at Planetfootball..

<a href="http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=90653&clid=1&cpid=8&Title=Rustu+only+wants+big+move" target="_blank">web page</a>

And another (get the feeling we're scouting for a keeper?):
This time its £3million-rated Argentine goalkeeper Gustavo Campagnuolo, of Racing Club.

A Racing spokesman said: 'The future of Campagnuolo is not guaranteed here because Manchester United have him in their plans and we expect them to make a move in the next few days.'

Rustu is the Turkish national keeper, and is rated as damn good. He's 28.
I'd still go for Given. Weakens Newcastle, prevents the Arse going for him, and gets us a damn fine goalkeeper.

So Rustu is the one ?? .. ...I am not so sure if Turkish could adapt well to English game ... I am not doubting his goalkeeping ability here ... just that there might be too much of culture difference !! .. and 1st and for most ... he speak English ?? ..

I am sure everybody will speak abt Given .. just like Finnan is continuosly in the news lately ... both are in the Premier League team of the season and so of course - to look the nearest they are the best around ... But hey, the Geordies has an old-fox in Robson .. you think you will ever get anything from him ?? ... no chance my friend ...

I have always rated Poom ... well ok his team was always struggling ... but he is a good stopper no doubt ... I am just a bit curious though why nobody mentioned abt Hedman !? .. he's deep down there in 1st Div. but he's a magnificent stopper as well ... and will be starring in WC I am quite sure ... I don't think Conventry will ask for the sky for him .. or is his contract gonna run out soon ? ...

If Barthez leaves, I think we should go for Thomas Sørensen. He´s only 25 (26 in June) and he has allready made an impact in the premier league.
Sørensen has been outstanding for Denmark, and he is not the one to blame for Sunderlands poor season. Thomas Sørensen has his best years ahead og him, and at 7-8 mil. £ He would be a bargain IMO.

Mind you, Schmeichel was almost 28 when he joined us back in 1991.

Brthez is going no where. Fergei is just getting a replcement for VanDerGaouw. For heaven sake a team needs three good keepers, two experienced for safety purposes.

sounds logical only if it's Poom or Hedman and they are coming for like 2mil or something ... Can't be a Turkish No.1 and he comes here to be the deputy of Barthez ?? ... don't make sense ...

Anyway .. just see how things go .. all still pretty much rumours now ...

its bull just like the Seba Veron story in todays sunday mirror

Sunday Mirror make bull to make money - <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

I have serious doubts over the validity of this story, but then again stranger things have happened.

Personally i would like to see him stay, barthez is an excellent keeper, except when the VOICES start making him do mad things, but in all seriousness he is a world class, experienced keeper and there is no need to replace him.

If he were to go, i dont think poom is utd standard, i would be interested in any out of the following, landreau, frey, given & cudicini(chelsea getting a bargain, will wonders never cease, they got him for 600K!!!)

Why not sign an understudy for Roy and spend the dosh elsewhere?

Just a thought.

Cant count on Roy yet.He will mature in about 2 seasons.Rustu seems to be a good choice if Barthez leaves.
