Vijay, it's not that I don't like him. It is simply that I think he lacks that something that has to be in a United player... He lacks that passion, that drive... And the reason I would want someone else is just because there are perhaps some keepers available who may just about as good talentwise, while maybe being able to show something of another dimension in his play for United - I have in mind someone like Paul Robinson - young and English and from Leeds ;)

If not for his inability to save we might be in the Champions League Semi-Final.

Do you not think that we could do better?

I shouldn't really be in here but....... anyway, saying he lacks passion and drive is a joke. These are not this guys' failings and it is wrong to accuse him of that. In fact that's quite a slur on his character and no matter how many errors he's made (and all keepers do make plenty of errors) he doesn't deserve that type of uninformed and sepculative criticism. What he lacks is consistency - this is all about his performances not his person.

Exactly, he's like a yo yo.

His problems are mental IMO, concentration. There is nothing wong with his basic physical ability.

I understand the sentimentality, Vijay. Barthez has been a quite outstanding performer very often... And I personally hate losing our players... But, really, we need someone who has the same level of intensity as a Schmeichel... You look across the team and everyone displays quite an intensity while performing for us. Everyone except, to some extent, Barthez. He seems aloof, often. I would want someone who is more intense...

I am sure you would agree my assessment of his aloofness :) .

It was in response to her question but intended as food for thought for all.

Actually the late Les Sealey replaced Leighton :p

The point being when you think of Leighton and Taibi you realise that Fergie doesn't tolerate inconsistant goalkeeping. Of course I cannot know whether he considers Barthez this way but I have to say that Barthez reminds me very much of Leighton actually and the parallels in their careers may well be even more markedly similar soon.

In fact, Dans has a point, Barthez and Leighton are very similar in that it is in their head where they both have their problems.

I know. But Les was a stepping stone in the search that culminated in Schmeichel. Just like Barthez is a stepping stone in the search for the next Scmeichel.

That search isn't over yet by any means, but I think it will stop for a little while.

Lemme get this clear.

You believe we've been searching for a new Schmeichel for the past two years whilst Barthez has been in nets but not found one and that now, specifically at this point in time, not long after an almost universally recognised sub par performance in a big match, now we've stopped looking for a new Schmeichel?

I think we've been searching for a new Schmeichel for 2 years yes. But I think the search has gone nowhere for a while and will continue to go nowhere because there aren't any better keepers than Barthez out there who

a) are out of contract.
b) are available for a price that United is willing to pay.

rustu is out of contract

leeds would have to sell robinson for whatever price offered

both far better than fab

Niether are better than Barthez. Rustu will never be despite the hype, while Robinson may be in the future and he's a good bet.

I disagree that Rustu is better than Fab. I haven't seen him play except in the World Cup and as Diouf proves it is not a very accurate gauge of a player's ability.

I think Robinson would be a player that Leeds would want to hang on to. We're more likely to get Kewell than Robinson, but no one knows the budget for a new keeper.

Rustu is a calamity waiting to happen in my onion. do those who see bobo as not "steady" enough actually see anything different in the turk? prone to lapses in concentration and shite on crosses.
if bobo has not done enough in his best season for us yet, then Ceh or Robinson but not Rustu for me.

But you're suggesting then that Barthez was never more than a stop gap. Interesting. I'm not sure if I agree - I feel Fergie thought he was the one and that he just hasn't delivered. I agree with you on Rustu though - not interested in him at all.

No I'm not suggesting that at all. I agree with you. But it turns out that we have still not found Schmeichel's successor that's all.

We're linked with Niemi today (BBC) and the report also claims we tried to make a last minute bid before he transferred to Soton. Not sure about him either - he has something - reminds me of Canizares at Valencia. Personally I would like to see two new keepers - one to take over the reigns immediately and one for the future. Niemi may be the one for the coming years, but he'd need some serious back up and I'm thinking Robinson (if he really is a United fan he'll accept a lesser role for a couple of years) or this Czech Cech (I like that!) who despite never having seen him gets rave reviews and just possibly could be that replacement we've been looking for that you talk of.
