So says goalkeeping coach Tony Coton. Interesting.

I hope so, although personally I can see a bit of a merry go round where keepers are dropped after less than 100% sure performances - I hope it doesn't backfire.

I think there may be a bit of psychology involved here to keep Fabien on his toes. Although I think the gap's closed between him and the others in terms of being first choice, I'd be surprised if he wasn't still "first among equals" in the pecking order. Especially with the European matches, I'd be really surprised if Fabien wasn't playing if he was fit.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Although I think he'll find if he plays another game like Deportivo last here he'll find himself dropped like a shot.

All good points. What you need is consistency so whoever is in goal has to have a run and can't be dropped because of one dodgy game. I agree barthez will be no 1 but he seems injury prone and we now have excellent back up. The situation reminds when Tommy Doc, then manager of Chelsea, bought Alex Stepney from Millwall although he had a very adequate keeper in Peter Bonnetti. He said he would play him Stepney one week and Bonnetti the next. Of course it didn't work and Busby quickly stepped in to sign Alex, the final piece in his championship winning side of 1967.

I've read that this morning and it's enough to put me in a bad mood for the day. Although I was aware that Ricardo wouldn't have come if he hadn't been told that he had a chance to play for the first team. But Fab has never been afraid of competition, even if he thinks that his post needs stability. I hope it will keep him focused. I've heard that he was eager to play for France vs Cyprus (but it was too soon according to Santini). He must be keen to prove he can do better than last year, and I know he can !

Ricardo looked the biz the other night all be it for the resveres he looked a great shot stopper, talker and has a good left foot which he picks out people with

id give him his debut against bolton

What do you expect to hear from a coach? whether it's for goalkeepers or the rest of the field, he'd say no one has a certain place in the team and it's always a battle for places.

But Barthez IS the undisputed number 1 no matter what Coton says. The moment he was fully fit he was back in goal, wasn't he?

And why do that? We now have 4 of the 5 components of our first choice defence for the season (except Gary Neville)... Let them have a bit of a run.

Because Barthez isn't fully fit yet. Didn't he get clattered against Boro? Give Ricardo a shot I say. We shouldn't sign players if we don't play them.

Thank god for that, now hopefully we can ship him back to France where he can do less damage. Iv never been a fan of the Bartman.

Thank god for what? So how much do you know of Ricardo that you're willing to make him number 1?

Barthez is still first choice and anyone who fails to realise that is a tad blind.

Personnally I think that Fabien is our best keeper and even one of the best (if not not best) keep in the world...

He won't have any excuses now, we have GOOD (finally!) defence... :p

It's also interesting what he said about the youth keepers, how he expects many of them to do well at the highest level: "I now have eight keepers who I wouldn't be afraid to recommend for first team duty"

RedCafe News: No Number One Keeper - Coton

barthez was noticeably quiet and sombre through the boro game - no hailing of taxis or grinning like a demented children's entertainer. i think hes been told to keep it simple, regain that stability that wasnt there at times last season.
THATS MY ONION BOYS!!

He was quiet during the Boro game because for most of the match he had bugger all to do. I'd be suprised to see him stay after this season if he isn't the first choice,
Carroll must be a pissed off, he's done nothing wrong and all of a sudden he's not even on the bench.
The problem with having 3 first team keepers is trying to keep 2 happy while he other one plays, and creating a defensive unit that is comfortable playing together. It a very difficult situation that Sir Alex has.

Fabien did have some really bad games last year. I'm not trying to excuse those performances but I do think that he wasn't helped by the defensive frailities that we had particularly early on in the season. From memory, I think his worst performances were in that period after Jaap was sold and when Larry was still trying to come to terms with the demands of the premiership. Also, Wes had a couple of pretty bad games in that period as well (against Bolton and Deportivo). And I think all of that instability had a knock on effect...

We should remember how good Fabien was in his first year with us...and what he's capable of. Hopefully, with a stable back four of Gary/Rio/Larry/Mikael, we'll see the best of him this year.

If he's that great why a top Spanish club hasn't signed him as first team player ? Why does it cost only 1,5 £ ? No comparison between his list of tropheys and Barthez'list of tropheys...

I agree with that, although if he has another bad period, this time he'll lost his place. :( But he likes challenges...

If he has a bad period he should lose his place. And we should probably be looking for a real replacement.

However, until such a thing happens, he is the number 1 keeper because he is our best keeper.

As for Carroll, from what I've seen he's a fine backup keeper but he is no regular first team material just yet. The Sunderland goal was just baffling.

TBH i don;t think he's good enough to be our number one... he made mistakes against chelsea and sunderland...which cost us two victories.

He did make mistakes, but you're judged on a longer period than 2 games. Last season he was our best keeper. He kept a clean sheet against the baggies and the hungarians.

How many games did he play, and against who ? Yes he was very good but he had never to face a top side. He also let 5 goals with North Ireland. Barthez made some excellent games after December but people have short memory and remind only the bad.

Anyway it's clear that he won't be the number one. If it's not Fab it will be Ricardo. Otherwise they would have given him the number one shirt last season.

IMO if Coton has declared that it's probably because it's impossible to say to any of our keepers "You're the number 3" without a crisis...

Elfie, quel est ton pronostique pour le match de ce soir?

La france gagnera 5-0... :p

He's a very good keeper. I've seen him play several times, and when he signed I got a load of text messages from my mates in Spain saying what a great keeper we got at a very very good price.

Barthez can be 1st.choice except for games against the Arsenile and the Liverfools who have very strong French connection. I am not alleging anything but coincidentally, he didn't do well against both teams when he played. I strongly suggest that against them, Barthez and Blanc should be rested.

What do you mean "I'm not suggesting anything"? Don't be so utterly ridiculous you idiot.

Why they didn't keep him then ?

Well he was good for the last game vs Liverpool, in January, he was excellent during 80 minutes vs Arsenal, it would have been stupid to make 10 saves then feck up on purpose...And La Coruna, are they Frenchmen in this side ?

Don't worry, he doesn't need money, it's not his style, and I don't think he's keen to ruin his reputation to please some French managers ... Don't forget that Arsenal and Liverpool are just the best English sides...After us, of course...

Because his contract was due to run out next summer, so they decided taking the money is a better idea.

Now Elfie, I know how much you like Barthez but don't try to slag Ricardo's abilities or something. As, erm, most of us don't really know him. ;)

> From memory, I think his worst
> performances were in that period after Jaap
> was sold

We were shipping a lot of goals just before Stam was sold, too. Everyone's forgotten that. The defence has been a mess for ages, very glad to see Rio visably taking charge, it's something we've missed at central defence for a long, long time.

maybe because they didn´t want to spoil the chance of his life like erm rennes?

If I recalled correctly, there was some allegation of him "not performing" by the Coach of one of his previous team. Who knows, maybe he was sympathetic to his French friends for not winning any trophies.
He is one of those players whose mind cannot be read easily. The only position in the game that can cause a team to lose the game easily is the goalkeeper. He can made 10 wonderful saves and "give away" a goal and still nobody can cast doubt on him. You had your Bruce Gobbelar and over here we had quite a few.
