Baresi, Maldini, Nesta and Cannavaro....

Interesting. Maldini was better than Baresi for me, but i didn't know many rated Cannavaro better than Nesta.
Cannavaro's a bit dirty but considering he's not that fast, or tall, he makes very, very few mistakes. Like Baresi, he's smart enough to not ahve to do a lot of sprinting and uses his body well enough to win more headers than he really should considering his height. Nesta's close to him though and has a few more years left to overtake him while Cannavaro's career's almost over

Baresi
Maldini
Cannavaro
Nesta

Baresi is my favourite footballer of all time not many people will understand why but being a defender myself he was the one I always loved watching just because how he read the game with such ease.

Baresi
Maldini
Cannavaro
Nesta

Never got the bid deal with Nesta. Excellent centre back but not the best in the world and capable of mistakes, nearly made a huge blunder against us last season when he let Fortune in.

Cannavaro is pound for pound one of the best defenders I've ever seen.

Maldini
Baresi
Cannavaro
Nesta

Cannavaro is an all action defender compared to Nesta.

Baresi - Legendary defender! Even retired the mans shirt! Milans all time best defender, period!

Maldini - Legend also! almost as good as Baresi but not quite!

Cannavaro > Nesta!

Obviously considering all of them at the best, how would you rank these 4 ?

How would you rate them as centrebacks?

Baresi, Cannavarro, Nesta, Maldini.

Baresi was te best CB I've ever seen. A true leader in the back, fantastic in the timing of tackles, with an excellent positional sense.

Canna and Nesta compliment each other very well, though I'd prefer a young Canna to a young Nesta.

Maldini was not really a centreback. He moveed there towards the end of his career. He was fantastic at the left though.

I'm suprised you've left out Giuseppe Bergomi. He's probably the best of the lot.

He was better than either Cannavaro or Nesta. Bergomi was the kind of defender Barasi aspired to be!

Any way based on your limited choice:

Baresi
Maldini
Nesta
Cannavaro

The reason I chose Baresi ahead of Maldini is because Baresi played in the bad old days when opponents kicked the crap out of you and the refs did nothing. He was also one of the best sweepers of all time - maybe the only one better than him was perhaps Beckenbauer.

If I had to chose between Baresi or Maldini for United, I'd choose Baresi.

Nesta is made out as a superstar on all of the computer games, however hasn't impressed most of the times I've seen him

I'd put Baresi top on reputation but i have never seen him play so:

Maldini
Cannavaro
Nesta

Hmm, seem s like people hardly rate Nesta. To be honest, i think while he's been fantastic at Milan, i think it was his Lazio form that really caused me to pay attention.

Bergomi is a good shout by the way.

I've been pretty impressed with Nesta everytime i've seen him play

I only saw Baresi play a handful of times and I didn't even have pubes back then, so I can't really judge how good he was.

So for me it's Maldini, then Cannavaro and then Nesta. I prefer Cannavaro to Nesta because of his robust style of play, but Nesta is a class act, obviously. In terms of defending I'd say they're around the same level, they make such a splendid partnership

Tough question

Both Maldini and Baresi are what I call "complete" defenders and both players are what I consider the best defenders ever. Despite that Baresi was a better leader and teacher. He held great influence on many young talent (Maldini, Panucci but also players like Desailly) who ended up becoming great defenders themselves.

Nesta is Italy's finest defender. Ok he is not a specialist marker as Cannavaro is but he is a much complete defender and stronger on air. So my list is this

Baresi
Maldini
Nesta
Cannavaro

Good point.

Barsei vs Maldini is a very close call, one I consider the best centreback ever and the other the best leftback ever. If I had to choose, I'd say Maldini only because he's had a career right at the top for 20 years, that little bit longer than Baresi.

Nesta is a bit like Rio & Cannavaro is more like Terry (a lot shorter), not a lot between them again...

Baresi, definitely the best centre-back ever, a true leader for Milan

Maldini, he's original position is left full back, but done well in the centre for Milan, especially when he and Nesta were together in the centre of defence on 2002

Nesta and Cannavaro is very close though.

Youre making him sound as if he was a one year wonder. Baresi's football career spans between 1977 and 1997. During that time he played 81 times with the Italian national team (winning the World cup in 1982 and captianing the italian side to the World Cup Final in 1994). He played 532 times with AC Milan, winning the league 6 times, the CL 3 times and ended up CL runners up twice. I wonder if there is a British player who can pride of such records.
